My venture for ‘stupidest post of the year’ award, I was browsing the forum earlier and totally misread the title of the Unions post to be about the general purpose of, yes, onions. There was a small double take.
But really, she says after chopping one of the bastards up over dinner, do they? All they do is make you cry, sprout greenery in the vegetable drawer in the kitchen, shed flakes everywhere etc….
So for a lighter debate, I hereby give you onions. Useful or not?
(Alright I’ve wanted to post this all day, I admit it)
November 25, 2008 at 02:15 #191889Well Zoz, if you start as a kid and chew a piece of raw onion after every meal and last thing at night and you’ll have the cleanest teeth possible: no need for toothpaste or toothbrush. , No bugg@r will go near you mind, but you’ll have gnashers to put Donny Osmond to shame.

November 25, 2008 at 02:34 #191899Onions are truly the Everyman of the vegetable kingdom.
Onion Tip #1: To sex-up an omlette, lob some finely chopped onion, chilli, and green pepper, into the mix. Rye!

He said, ‘Those are pickled onions'”.

November 25, 2008 at 12:50 #191957Even better than onions is Garlic.
Nothing like being on a crowded bus or underground train with the lovely whiff of garlic. You kind of get used to it.
Seriously though, it is very good for you, my dad was always cooking with it. It has medicinal powers, is an antibiotic and contains hundred of minerals and nutrients and It lowers the blood pressure and cholestrol, good for coughs and colds. One remedy I know for a cough is to crush a clove of garlic and mix it with a teaspoon of honey. Loverly !
November 25, 2008 at 13:36 #191964I hope so Maggie, it’s probably the second most used ingredient in my house – behind chillis of course.
Made a two person curry on Sunday, which to be fair was double portions so would actually feed four.
Three bulbs (yep not cloves, whole bulbs) of garlic and three onions. No ****** came near me yesterday

Onions are great too.

November 25, 2008 at 16:14 #191999From my experience, the main purpose of onions is to supply the burnt bits when I make a curry from scratch ……..

November 26, 2008 at 00:41 #192156For Christmas dinner, my Mum always stuffs the turkey with onion stuffing. It’s just finely chopped onion and breadcrumbs, maybe a little seasoning, but you’ll never taste a more delectable turkey.
