Warning – contains long ramble and aftertiming[/color:1fxue5jc].
It is about time I started one of these threads! In the last three years, I have not been much of a punter. I put the serious form study on hold throughout uni, with a few meeting challenges against friends being the extent of my sports betting activity.
Now I am free and working in the industry, I am ready to get back in action. I love a ‘run it up’ mission, so I am starting with a £25 online bankroll. I had this sitting in my BetVictor account since a poker freeroll win in 2010. I am quite tight with my bankroll, so I am sticking to a 25 bet rule for the time being. So, the bets will be at cheeseburger levels until I can get some momentum going.
The story began at Cheltenham, where I had a pretty mediocre time of it. Only Tammy’s Hill in the Foxhunters brought me back just shy of break-even for the week.
I then held off until Saturday, where I had a couple of losers before a moment of madness to punt the last tenner on Ertijaal in the Spring Cup. If he hadn’t scrambled home, there would probably be no thread at all – but let’s brush that under the carpet!
Windhoek each-way then saved losses from Grandeur in the Winter Derby.Sunday’s bets also came down to fine margins, with Vote Often getting home at 10-1 (thank YOU B.O.G – I got on at 11-2). Defining Year didn’t win the Irish Lincoln, but it was still a good day.
After a couple of losers today, the war chest stands at £34.30. Now we are caught up, I will try to post my thoughts and bets well in advance.
March 24, 2014 at 21:04 #473131Good luck TYF, cheeseburgers galore hopefully
March 26, 2014 at 09:23 #473280I like
While You Wait
in the opening seller at Exeter.
He is fairly consistent on the flat, the ground will help him to get home and the opposition are no great shakes. Slaney Star has seconditis and has to recover from a fall, while Fruity Bun was flattered to get close in an ever weaker race than this.
£2 on at 5/2 (BOG).
WINNER

March 26, 2014 at 10:18 #473288Cheers VTC. I’m also on
Daymar Bay
in the 15:10.
He usually finishes his races well, so a rare expedition away from a tight, flat track should be right up his street. He seems well-handicapped, especially since I truly rate his recent conqueror Christopher Wren.
He has the visor on today, which hopefully won’t fire him up too much. Ideally, this will draw his finishing effort out before it is too late this time.
We’ll see – I got 5-1.
WON
(actually got 9-2, though
)March 26, 2014 at 12:02 #473306A few more to add.
I like the improving
Shrewd Investment
who runs on good terms in the hunter chase last on the card at Exeter. Cheekpieces could be the final piece of the jigsaw, so he was worth £2.
I also have
Dr Red Eye
and
Regal Parade
(£1 each) in the 15:50 Southwell. The Doctor has plunged in the handicap after some shockers, but has bounced back from a bad spell with a win in the past. He’s too well-treated to avoid at the prices. I think Regal Parade will love the surface given that he likes a bit of cut on turf. He’s also fit and sits on a good mark with his rider’s claim. I like these two against a field otherwise exposed or coming back from a break.
In case they all fail today, there is still £26.80 in the kitty. At least we can’t dip out of profit.
That might change if I find some punts at tonight’s all-weather meeting, though.

March 26, 2014 at 16:05 #473327It has been an up and down day so far, but we’re freerolling Shrewd Investment in the last with a solid profit.
While You Wait
may have been lucky when his main rival went kamikaze at the last flight down the back, but he did the job nicely in the end.
Daymar Bay
never gave me a moment of worry with a smooth performance and might be a horse to follow in the spring.
Regal Parade
and
Dr Red Eye
had a wooden spoon race. Perhaps Regal Parade didn’t like the kickback given that he made all when he won on the surface as a youngster, but it was a tame effort from that pair.
The bankroll s up to a peak £42.05, not including the stake in the hunter.
March 26, 2014 at 18:37 #473340Shrewd Investment lived up to his name to round off a very good day at Exeter with 3 out of 3. Forget your Cheltenhams and Aintrees – give me selling hurdles and hunter chases!
With perfect hindsight, I probably should have avoided Regal Parade’s race. He might have bigger targets later in the season and Dr Red Eye might just be on the decline.
Nothing got me excited at Kempton this evening, so we’ll end the day on £52.05.

March 27, 2014 at 14:31 #473428Cheers Nathan and VTC, so glad to get off to a good start.
Not a major fancy, but I think Outbacker (13/2) is worth a quid from the pile in the 16:20 Wolves. She might not be straightforward given that she hangs left, but perhaps she just gets tired and needs the drop in trip today.
Mark Johnston’s horses have been needing their comebacks a little lately, so I’ll give her a chance.
March 27, 2014 at 19:09 #473450Darn, we hit the crossbar with that one. The filly wasn’t really helping Joe Fanning though.
I managed to burn off £2 by backing Sri Lanka in the cricket and have £1.50 on Barney in the darts (100/30) tonight. I promise that this will be mainly racing though!
March 28, 2014 at 00:28 #473480Well, it was a losing day, but the wonders of in-play betting made it respectable.
We had:
Outbacker -£1
Sri Lanka -£2
Barney to win -£1.50
£4 DRAW (Taylor v Barney in-play at 5-5…looked like time to get a saver): +£3.64So we’re down 84p for the day, which I consider a decent result after a narrow loser and some dabbles with sports I don’t follow as closely as racing. Mark my words – I’ll grind out some tidy racing winners and lose it all on Chinese basketball or something ridiculous!
Anyway, I’ll have a proper look at the Lincoln as top priority tomorrow. On the first scan, Hayley Turner’s mount pops out as my most likely bet, but I have to watch all the replays before I get involved.
Bankroll: £51.19 (+£26.19)
March 28, 2014 at 14:46 #473509I’ve had a go at Wetherby today.
Rock A Doodle Doo
looks good in the 16:30, with the main danger probably coming from Rayak. That horse has finished weakly when the money was down a few times, so there may be more to his disappointments than the soft ground.
Back to the hunters, I think
Spotthestripe
can turn over Rosie De Berlais in the 17:05. This horse rustled up Shy John last time, which is a pretty decent effort in the context of this race. She gets weight from Rosie.
Add a couple of quid on
Bandit Country
in the bumper. I was suprised to get odds-against since he should be different gravy to these and took the value.
Add
Avondream
(18:30 Wolves). The jockey is not totally convincing, but 7lbs off a horse who might be well-treated anyway is not to be ignored.
EDIT: Avondream is a non-runner, but I like
Mahadee
later on the card. He’ll take over that bet.
March 28, 2014 at 16:20 #473516Good thread TYF, nice to see some reasoning behind daily selections. May I add one for tonight at Dundalk, Fine Cut for Tommy Stack in the first I think has a good chance as trainer is one to follow at the start of the season. Hasn’t pulled up any trees so far but drops back in trip and should take care of the modest competition after a few months break.
