If it’s true Truss didn’t vote to save herself then that’s surely shows how thick she really is , yesterday was a black day in British political and if she does manage to stagger through the next ill be amazed ….anyone remember the Pythons dead parrot scene …that’s the Tory party …getting knocked off the counter …” It’s dead ….its a dead parrot ” , put her out of her misery …and us
October 20, 2022 at 06:49 #1619194I cannot see what device Labour can use to force an election – a no confidence vote always focusses government minds, is defeated and gives a government renewed momentum.
Although I could see at least one change of PM during the time span, we are saddled with this government until the end of its term – 2024 or later remains 1.45 and rightly so.

Yes it certainly would be interesting if he did use his powers, could anyone actually stop him? Certainly a stern word wouldn’t go amiss, the content of political discussions between Elizabeth II and PMs was kept secret so I’m sure Charles can manage that too. The Tories are turning this country into more an international laughing stock by the day if not the hour.
Ian, yes the system is the problem. It’s clear that anywhere between 75 and 80 percent of people want them out but we have no way of actually forcing it. They work for us. I believe that MPs have a duty to act in the best interests of their constituents. If they actually performed that duty there’d be an election tomorrow. As it is they are far more interested in protecting their own fat salary and benefits becuase they know they’ll be out of a job when an election comes.
There is an ever worsening crisis and the Government is too interested in it’s own pathetic domestic squabbles to care. We need leadership and we need it now.
This is turning into genuine anger from me now, it’s far beyond a joke at this stage and it’s nothing to with what party anyone is from. I don’t care what party takes over, just please let it be someone competent for the sake of the country.
October 20, 2022 at 10:23 #1619201Still 1.24 to be gone by the end of the year.
Many wondering if she can last today – the equally-horrible Braverman resignation statement to come.

October 20, 2022 at 13:40 #1619214Liz Truss has just announced her resignation. What we really need is a general election, but guess the Tories are scared to call one.
My own opinion is it’ll be Rishi Sunak (if he stands)

October 20, 2022 at 14:31 #1619226The best 11/8 chance I have ever backed. 😉
The odds-against good thing wins like it should, nice one
Needless to say, I regret not taking the 8/1 I reckoned to be “rather inviting” on Truss to be booted out this year available at the time you placed your bet
Some hack mentioned that the new PM is to be elected by an online vote of the party members – they cannot be serious, can they?
Bring on a general election
October 20, 2022 at 14:42 #1619228Yes, I wish I had taken that 8/1 myself! But at the time I genuinely thought she would limp on into the spring at least.
An online poll begs the question: why did they not do this in the first place? Were all these interminable debates necessary, leaving the country looking like it was ungoverned for weeks at a time of increasing economic turmoil.

All the signs are that is the last thing on various ambitious minds, who would even regard inheriting dust as a result.
Brady and the grandees want it settled fast, maybe even an unopposed unity candidate.
That sounds unlikely to happen as various factions talk about lining up candidates.
It’s good news for every anti-Tory voter long-term, but in the shorter term more pain for the country.
