Laura Kuenssberg is so poor.
Truss has just been droning on about how we’re in a global crisis, then says “We are facing a unique situation in this country”, thereby contradicting herself.
Was she pulled up on it by Kuenssberg? Nope.
October 2, 2022 at 09:12 #1616709That is why it was such a big mistake by Truss to do those local radio interviews. Those hosts, who seldom if ever get the chance to interview the Prime Minister, were going to make it count and have no incentive to maintain a good relationship.
Kuenssberg, on the other hand, is totally within the Westminster Bubble and as such wants to stay on good terms with all the leading players. It is not in her interests to do anything to embarrass Truss. At least not yet.
October 2, 2022 at 09:23 #1616710Spot on, CAS.
Laura K and Peston want to maintain access – local journalists have nothing to lose (and maybe see a chance to make a name for themselves – the next Paxman or Maitlis).

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 2, 2022 at 09:52 #1616721Makes these interviews all rather pointless really then doesn’t it? The media’s job is to hold politicians of all stripes to account. If they can’t do that then why bother?
October 2, 2022 at 10:02 #1616725It certainly limits them.
“Going native” is the term my father used to use and it applies in many walks of life.
People enter jobs planning to ruffle feathers, but it then is simply easier to get on the gravy train, cultivate permanent access and rake in the earnings.
“I’m terribly sorry, PM, but I’m going to have to ask you about this when we go live” is the apologetic line I just bet a few spin off air before awkward interviews during crises.
So much of what we see, hear and read is agenda-ridden.
Take QT – you know what the Tory, Labour and Lib-Dem will say before they even speak, you know the non-politician will seize the fact they’re not after your vote to behave like an anarchic big kid, and you know Fiona Bruce won’t be too hard on any of them.
That’s why I stopped watching it years ago.
Genuinely probing journalism with no agenda other than to get at the truth is sadly rare.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 2, 2022 at 10:18 #1616730QT is awful, and the audience is a bad as the panel. I too gave up on it ages ago, I do occasionally try but five or ten minutes is enough.
October 2, 2022 at 10:31 #1616736I gave up watching the Sunday morning programmes a few years ago. And “Question Time” should be renamed “Waste Of Time”.
During the Robin Day and Peter Sissons era, senior Cabinet ministers and Opposition front benchers appeared on the programme. Now it is usually the minister for paper clips and a left wing comedian playing to the gallery.
The political journalists are just as much a part of the Westminster game. They will be calling and texting politicians all the time, will go to the same restaurants and the same places on holiday. All a nice, cosy little club.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 3, 2022 at 07:09 #1616947All the rumours are that Truss is set to do a U turn and scrap the plan to abolish the 45p tax rate, just 24 hours after telling Laura Kuenssberg she was fully committed to the policy.
October 3, 2022 at 07:57 #1616948The whole policy has been a dreadful own goal from a Tory point of view. It was obviously a stupid thing to do in the first place and the U turn won’t turn back the clock, especially as she doubled down on it as little as 24 hours ago. Once it was announced, doesn’t matter if it stayed or went, it’s a simple attack line for opposition parties.
October 3, 2022 at 08:17 #1616949Confirmed in tweet by Kwarteng.
A poorly thought through policy they did not even have the backbone to defend. A total humiliation.
I cannot see how Truss or the government can possibly recover.
She is now 4/7 to be gone before the next election.
October 3, 2022 at 10:58 #1616960Government: ‘We don’t have money for…’
Everyone else: ‘You had money for a tax cut for the top 1% of earners.’
Either they did not foresee this being a disaster or they did/were warned and ignored it. Total ineptitude either way.
Some of the front pages have aged well.
October 3, 2022 at 11:06 #1616961I’m glad they’ve u-turned – the £2 billion can be put to better use, both economically and morally.
But goodness me what credibility do Truss and Kwarteng have left?
And in terms of interest/mortgage rates the damage has surely already been done.
In all my years I cannot remember such a car crash start to a Premiership with no mandate for what’s being done – then undone.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 3, 2022 at 11:30 #1616963Yes it’s a welcome U turn but if they think it will just be swept under the carpet they are in for a shock. As you say Ian, the damage to mortgage rates has already been done. Come up with a way to reverse that then I might be impressed.
October 3, 2022 at 12:00 #1616964Why this positive development is not reflected in the financial markets?
– GBP/USD: 1.1195, only (+0.31%)
– FTSE100: -34.78 points (-0.5%)October 3, 2022 at 12:04 #1616965“…the damage to mortgage rates has already been done. Come up with a way to reverse that then I might be impressed.”
The U.S. Federal Reserve has been exporting inflation to world economies for some time now, and they’re not expecting to let up anytime soon…
October 3, 2022 at 12:17 #1616966As has been pointed out, it’s a drop in the ocean compared to the rest of the so-called mini budget which remains an almost complete disaster. The 45% tax rate was always more about the political fallout, however welcome an extra £2bn is in the government’s books.
‘The U.S. Federal Reserve has been exporting inflation to world economies for some time now, and they’re not expecting to let up anytime soon…’
It’s always, always, always somebody else’s fault.
