I have to say that was magnificent by Lyles, this is not his favoured event but he talked himself up and delivered. There is every chance he gets three golds now, he’s very strong in the 200m and obviously the USA has a great chance in the relay with three individual finalists including two medallists.
August 4, 2024 at 23:47 #1704009I was gutted in the Golf Fleetwood 2nd by a shot drop a shot on 17th.
Schefler shoot a final round 9 under on that course was madness
August 5, 2024 at 22:49 #1704078Keely Hodgkinson odds on with all the firms to win Sports Personality of the Year. It is difficult to see anyone defeating her. The 10/11 might be good value.
August 6, 2024 at 07:47 #1704088It’ll become clearer, and the odds adjusted accordingly, when we know if Josh Kerr and Matt Hudson-Smith have won in the 1500m and 400m respectively. If they both win then it could dilute the athletics vote somewhat. They are both solid medal chances and very much in the conversation for gold but are not the ‘cert’ that Hodgkinson was. She delivered magnificently. If they both don’t win, she gets a lot shorter. If one or both win she drifts but not by that much and remains clear favourite I’d say. She’s got the best backstory having come second so many times in the last few years and is surely better known than the other two.
Katarina Johnson-Thompson is a potential spanner in the works too, again a great medal chance and if she does win then it’ll be in thrilling fashion because I cannot see her blowing the competition away. I hope I am wrong but I have a feeling the win is beyond her.
Cyclist Emma Finucane has been tipped by Laura Kenny to win three titles overall (one already in the bag) so could be up there but I’m not sure if the cyclists carry the same weight they did in the days of Hoy, Wiggins, Pendleton, both Kennys etc who practically became household names.
None of the other gold medallists so far seem to have really cut through with the public despite both Tom Pidcock and Alex Yee winning in stunning fashion.
August 6, 2024 at 08:23 #1704090Broadly agree with that assessment. I take on board that Kerr and Hudson Smith are potential rivals but even if they win, I cannot see either of them defeating Hodgkinson. She has won one of the glamour events and won it in convincing fashion. She also comes across as very likeable and is the sort of person who will get the public vote.
If Emma Finucane wins one of the other events, she will probably be on the podium. But I cannot see her getting more votes than Hodgkinson.
Despite reaching the final, none of the football team are realistically in the running, especially after they were less than convincing on the route to the final.
There was no British success in the golf majors or the cricket world cup, so there is no competition from there either.
The current second favourite is Luke Littler. Incredible as his rise has been, there is no way he is going to get more votes than an Olympic champion in a sport which traditionally does well in the competition.
August 6, 2024 at 08:41 #1704094Absolutely, Hodgkinson has cut through with the public far more than anyone else and whatever happens now she goes off favourite.
Worth noting that Kerr didn’t make the list last year when winning the world title in what was far from a vintage year for British sport. I have a feeling he did make his disappointment clear. They’ll have to include him if he does win but he will not have endeared himself to the BBC by criticising them.
Absolutely no chance anyone from football, cricket or golf wins it as you say. They may not even secure a nomination between them depending on how big the list is and what else happens. Perhaps a token football one if there’s 10 on the list or James Anderson in his retirement year but they’d get a couple of percent of the vote at best.
August 6, 2024 at 09:03 #1704096Yes, they would all be making up the numbers at best.
It will be interesting to see how Ben Maher gets on in the show jumping later. If he wins, he might get onto the podium. The equestrian events have a big following. Nick Skelton finished third in 2016 and that was after winning one gold, although he was very well known.
But Hodgkinson looks like an easy winner. I am slightly surprised she is still as big as 1.9 on Betfair, if only for small money.
If she had won on a Saturday or Sunday night, I think she would be shorter.
August 6, 2024 at 09:40 #1704101That put the curse on Maher, unfortunately.
August 6, 2024 at 12:59 #1704106Skateboarding on now. And so far most of the girls have fallen off.
There was surfing earlier as well. I know the Olympics is trying to increase the appeal of the games to the young but are these really sports? Especially as they are two more events where the outcome is decided by a panel of judges.
August 6, 2024 at 13:08 #1704107At least skateboarding is the same track for everyone. Surfing surely requires some element of blind luck with the waves. An artificial wave machine would surely make more sense. And the commentators scream and shout at almost everything in the skateboarding and BMX that I have seen, it’s not helpful for a novice. It’s all impressive to me, I expect the experts to be able to tell me the difference.
But I do struggle a bit with anything that’s solely on judges scores.
August 7, 2024 at 21:03 #1704163I see the powers that be decided people should wear berets at the medal ceremonies I’m surprised they didn’t extend it to strings of onions or garlic around their necks

The more I know the less I understand.
August 7, 2024 at 21:35 #1704164Gutted for Matt Hudson-Smith, only four men have ever run faster and one of them was right in front of him. But if you’ve put in a performance that good and it still wasn’t enough I think you just have to accept it, I do not see what else he could have done and he can hold his head high.
Last night’s 1500m was a phenomenal race too.
August 7, 2024 at 21:49 #1704165I had at least one winner with my bets on page 1
Q Hall 400m at 7/2 though felt he was like
Jamie Spencer and left it to lateAugust 7, 2024 at 22:39 #1704166Proving that it’s not all about the medals was Andy ‘Old’ Macdonald who was tearing up the skatepark at age 51. He just looked absolutely delighted to be there. Whatever one thinks of its inclusion it was great to see and also bloody impressive. Most of the competitors are teenagers and early 20s.
August 8, 2024 at 05:54 #1704170The steeplechase was a great race as well, although I hope the runner who fell is OK.
August 8, 2024 at 06:48 #1704171One of the worst falls I can recall seeing, thankfully reported as conscious and talking:
August 8, 2024 at 15:13 #1704195France against Spain in the final tomorrow
I haven’t bet much at all but still enjoyed watching the events to a degree
I did take skyboost on Alex Yew in the triathlon.. I was working so messaged my son to see how he was getting on
He replied “Not going to win as too far behind but guaranteed silver”
then about 3 minutes later “OMG HE WON”The 100m final was good.
I’m not overly keen on Kerr but felt a little sorry for him as he ran the race to beat the fav only for the American lad to take him by surprise.. To be fair the American had his run blocked so did ever so well to win.
Keely was amazing and deserved fav for the SPOTY
Charles Darwin to conquer the World
