I have just heard on the news that Oliver Postgate has passed away age 83.
If the name is not familiar you will more likely know his distinctive voice.
He was the voice of The Clangers, Bagpuss and Noggin The Nog.
However for me, I will most remember him for Ivor The Engine. Looking at it now with it’s hand drawings and basic “animation” it was so very simple – but what made it come to life was his storytelling.
His voice was almost musical and he could hold the attention of his audience.
Some of his creations were quite surreal but he somehow had the knack of producing hit shows for children.
Condolences to his family and thank you for the childhood memories.
December 9, 2008 at 14:18 #195601Yes, I felt a twinge of nostalgic sadness on hearing he’d died.
A comforting, warm, musical voice indeed
Noggin the Nog and the super-surreal Clangers were my favourites
The imaginative open mind of the child is more accepting of fantasy and surrealism than the realist closed mind of the adult
Great stuff
are you sitting comfortably?
December 9, 2008 at 14:21 #195602I feel like a part of my childhood has gone with him.
A melifluous accompaniment to every evening meal. How sad.
December 9, 2008 at 14:26 #195603A brilliant, brilliant man. Principled and political without being self-righteous, and responsible for a wealth of work shot through with both a warm humanity and wide-eyed charm. He’ll be greatly missed.

December 9, 2008 at 14:42 #195606I was only recently showing my 3 year son The Clangers and Ivor The Engine on U-Tube. He did look a tad perplexed but that could have been because the big kid behind him was making all the noises sshhhhhhteecome, sshhhhhhteecome, sshhteecome sshhteecome
Grasshopper, a fitting description although I did have to look up what mellifluous meant.

Brilliant childrens TV
December 9, 2008 at 17:06 #195636So many good memories from my childhood.
It’s funny really, my reaction on hearing of his death as I drove to work this morning was mixture between ‘Oh dear, how sad’ and warm memories of his classic childrens television.
R.I.P. Oliver, and thank you.
December 9, 2008 at 17:41 #195646Good grief – I have just visited You-Tube and watched the first ever episode of Ivor The Engine- do you know I never ever realised it had been filmed in colour?
I always assumed it was in black and white because black and white TV is all we had when I was a kid … and there were only two channels..
It was a delight to watch – and listen to his voice – although watching it as an adult it does sound so corny – I don’t think kids nowadays would give it a second glance – which is a great pity as it is lovely, innocent, storytelling at its very best.

I so agree. Almost every happy memory of childhood TV watching had his name behind it.
RIP to a legend.

December 10, 2008 at 21:28 #195936Pogles Wood barely gets a mention. His finest achievement for sure.
December 10, 2008 at 21:56 #195944I found Tottie; the story of a dolls house a bit bleak, but he didn’t actually write it [find dolls a bit scary anyway]..must check out Pogles Wood.

I mentioned that one to my husband, but he couldn’t remember it existing at all. That was one of my favourites too, typical Postgate.
