Just heard the news that he passed away.
Very sad, a great character who will be missed.September 16, 2014 at 17:38 #490358Goodnight sweet Prince and flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest. How appropriate from one bard to another.
September 16, 2014 at 18:09 #490359Very sad news will be sadly missed around Irish winning enclosures I never met Oliver but I was a huge admirer of his a great character and he also did a lot of charity work rip
September 16, 2014 at 19:57 #490366I remember Oliver from a few outings he had on ATR. On one occasion he wrote a poem about having Matt Chapman riding one of his horses. I forget most of it but the line "My jockey was a clown" sticks in the memory.
I backed his horse Ebadiyan ante-post for the Triumph Hurdle back in 2009 and although he was being niggled along going to the second last, I thought he was starting to stay on well. Sadly he crashed out through the rail of that flight and never looked quite as good again.
Oliver didn’t keep good health himself and did well to live this long considering his problems. A terrific character from a bygone age of racing he always seemed positive and he worked at raising money for others stricken by illness.
A man a million miles away from giant stables motivated by making money.
Rest in Peace and "Up Monaghan"
A brief version of the poem is here:-

The horse Oliver tipped won at Clonmel 6 days after this at 9/4.
Terrific stuff!
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

You couldn’t help but warm to the man a real character who will be missed.

September 16, 2014 at 22:43 #490380Great man, highly entertaining and more importantly devoted himself to charitable causes despite his ill-health.
September 17, 2014 at 09:49 #490390I didn’t know much about his charitable work but that just adds to the legend. I always enjoyed the chats with Matt Chapman and the winning enclosure antics.
He took the Clive Brittain approach of not being scared to throw his horses in at the deep end and sometimes had an optimistic view of his horses abilities but I always cheered his runners on and the Irish racing world will be poorer without him. RIP.

September 20, 2014 at 19:56 #490657Only just saw this. What a character, will always remember him singing a song for Balapour in the gathering gloom after placing in the County Hurdle.
RIP Oliver, as others have said, up Monaghan!
