Strange to see this race at this time of the year. Stranger still that the trainers represented seem to think it’s a10f race looking at the declarations. I’ve never seen so many horses unproven at the trip in such a valuable race. Tears of a Clown looks sure to be popular and is a probably stayer but hard to know what his Ascot form is worth.
I’m pretty keen on the ever progressive and guaranteed stayer Mull of Dubai. I liked his last run where he pulled well clear at Ascot with Group Captain and he’d probably have won if his effort had been delayed for longer. 15/2 looks a massive price I think.
Luca’s Futun would be a danger at his best but he’s shaped this year as if temperament is getting the better of him. Find it difficult to get enthused about any of the rest in the race.
The sprint at 2.00 looks sure to be well run Merlins Dancer, Hoh Hoh Hoh, Cape Royal and Harry Up only have one way of running and I’m covinced the race will be set up for a closer. Toss up between Texas Gold and Dig Deep with preference for the former at the prices. Handicapper relenting somewhat and would have been involved at Goodwood last time with a clearer run.
August 11, 2007 at 01:16 #111061Hi DJ,
I have been impressed with Mull Of Dubai of late also but 2 aspects will prevent me from backing him. First of all, he clearly seems to go well for John Egan who has been on board all bar one of his career wins and regularly rides him – tomorrow young James Doyle gets the leg up for the very first time on him. But more importantly is that although Mull of Dubai has won before on Good To Firm, his career best form of late seems to be due to the fact that he looks really suited by soft ground, yet tomorrow he will probably be running on the quickest ground he has ever encountered.
I will be leaving the race alone and concentrating on the ‘circus’ that is the Shergar Cup at Ascot
Good luck with your selections mate.
Mike
August 11, 2007 at 02:40 #111065I keep looking and looking – and looking away in horror – but I can’t help thinking the "shrewd" Mr Guest has set the bottom weight Dzesmin up for this and the booking of Luke Morris (5) is the custard on the crumble. Stays, acts on the ground and hold up horses, (e.g. Inside Story, Sunlight), are doing well this meeting.
As DJ subtly implies, there are some mediocre horses in the race for the famous Old Newton Cup. The winner will be racing in next years Cumberland Plate rather than winning the Japan Cup, like Alkaased.

Can’t really agree that Hoh Hoh Hoh has only one way of running as he has looked a better horse when held up in his last 2 races? If KM can work the oracle today he must have a great chance.
In the Old Newton Cup, the trainer may pull out Mull Of Dubai if there’s ‘sting’ in the ground, but I wouldn’t see fast ground as a problem. Futun, otherwise.August 11, 2007 at 10:27 #111084With the trainers record in the race, Futon jumps out at me. His previous winners of this didn’t all come in to the race with stacks of winning form either.
I would have expected Nicky Mackay to be riding though, any idea why’s he on the Gerald Butler horse & Eddie Ahern (who doesn’t have much of a record for Cumani) is on Futon ?
