The physical privations of being a jockey will make recovery very hard, but he has taken the first step

BUY THE SUN
December 18, 2021 at 07:19 #1573060Tatling, your earlier post was very brave and very honest. Glad that you are holding the demons at bay.
December 18, 2021 at 07:51 #1573061Great post Seasider, I always enjoy these historical nuggets you dig up.
Very insightful post in a different way Tatling. Sending good wishes.
December 19, 2021 at 17:26 #1573325I worked as a volunteer for a while at the Citizens Advice Bureau and regularly saw loved ones of people with all kinds of troubles come into the office wanting to know …… ‘what can I do?’
The awful truth was that you had to tell them there was nothing they could do until their loved one admitted to themselves they had a problem. Then and only then could a response be formulated and put into action.
Admitting that something is wrong is always the first and major hurdle after which many things will fall into place with the support of loved ones and professional help.
I do hope this is something he can overcome but as posted previously it will become a lifelong battle.
good luck to allDecember 22, 2021 at 09:49 #1573844An excellent piece from Kevin Blake which provides more context to the case.

February 22, 2022 at 15:51 #1584310Oisin Murphy banned for 14 months and fine £31,111
February 22, 2022 at 15:57 #1584312Murphy’s ban is only a month shorter than the one received by Robbie Dunne, when the suspended part of the latter’s sentence is taken into account.
Is that fair and proportionate?
February 22, 2022 at 16:07 #1584314May not look proportionate but wonder whether the thinking is to give Oisin as much time off as experts feel he needs to get the situation under control?
Value Is EverythingFebruary 22, 2022 at 16:15 #1584315Perhaps Ginger – but Oisin stepped away voluntarily to deal with his problems.
I just wonder how it looks to those outside the racing bubble when someone gets 14 months for offences of poor judgement and possibly dishonesty, and another offender gets just one month more after verbally abusing and bullying a young woman and threatening her with violence.
February 22, 2022 at 16:23 #1584317Can’t compare both cases at all. Oisin seems to be a professional offender when it comes to alcohol. His offences can be measured and he likes to repeat himself. Making always the same mistake is not necessarly a sign of maturity and it is the best for the sport if he takes a longer break. I think he will come back and provide us with the same quality of riding.
Mr. Dunne has threatened Mrs. Frost, but he hasn’t done anything physical to her. I still don’t know, if she has any witnesses and who the people might be. He is very bad for the sport and certainly deserves a longer holiday, too. But how can you compare them?
February 22, 2022 at 16:28 #1584321Murphy has clearly not covered himself in glory, to say the least. But I still think banning him for an entire season is harsh.

February 22, 2022 at 16:43 #1584324That was my first reaction, but….
– It’s not so long ago we had a court case involving a jockey left disabled after an incident where alcohol was raised as a factor
– Racing was behind closed doors for months with all manner of security and testing surrounding participants
It’s the height of irresponsibility on both counts and he’s a supposedly mature adult, not a teenager.
I think the duration of the ban is about right.
But I also lament the complete and utter waste of talent.
Let’s hope history doesn’t end up remembering him as racing’s Paul Gascoigne.

Good point but as I recall, it was suggested that alcohol could be smelt on Gibbons’s breath. That implies to me he had been drinking not long before the race. I do not think there was any suggestion that Murphy was not in possession of his faculties.
He has been irresponsible and immature. He does need to face up to his issues and surround himself with responsible people (I am not sure that has been the case up to now). But a year’s ban is a very severe punishment, in my opinion.
I caught up with the Talking Points from Luck on Sunday this morning. Luck discussed the upcoming case with Dave Yates. I think it is fair to say that neither was anticipating such a lengthy ban for Murphy.

An example had to be made i guess
And Oisin had several indiscretions

I kinda think this nails it, tbh.
Given it’s proximity to the Tylicki case, they were always going to throw the book at the next high-profile jockey hauled in on anything even vaguely alcohol related.
I wasn’t expecting 14 months either, but, now I sit down and look at it in the cold light of day, I can kinda see why.
Or am I length of sentence aftertiming??!!
