July 13, 2008 at 18:51 #8402I found the analysis of Percolator’s form in France in the Post today fairly persuasive (clocking times very similar to Natagora last year) and reckon Coral’s 14/1 is pretty fair as she reportedly goes for the race. The current bunch of 5f sprinters are nothing special and she’ll get lumps of weight as a filly and a 2yo. A bit of cut would seem to help, but there are worse ante-post pokes, IMHO.

Percolator despite the impressive wins would have to go some to step up and take this Nunthorpe. I do like Captian Gerrard at 25-1 and have had a relatively big e/w but Equiano is rather big at 7-1 aswell.
I think i’ll make a post later in this thread when the race is abit closer though.
August 22, 2008 at 13:14 #177686I’m not Mr Ratings, but You have Kingsgaite Native and Equiano a long way ahead…I can’t help feeling that this could be a bunch finish.

August 22, 2008 at 13:26 #177689I think Kingsgate Native to win @5-1 isnt bad with the ground as it is, but think I’ll play the e/ws
Desert Lord e/w @40-1
Flashmans Papers e/w @ 25-1 and
Shyrl e/w @ 66-1August 22, 2008 at 15:18 #177703Brilliant result for the small trainer with Borderlescott finally getting a deserved win at the highest level.
August 22, 2008 at 15:22 #177706Too right, it was good to see, especially after being denied in another stewards cup, good on him.

Yep, really nice to see him win a big one and broke the track record I think.

So did 2 or 3 of those behind him, which just illustrates how many gp1 5f races the course holds.
August 22, 2008 at 21:36 #177733The result means nothing too me,its meaningless given that the horse is a gelding who has never won a stakes race before hand and the race was run over the wring conditions too those its nornally run over, it wiuld be like running the Abbey at Sandown. Newmarkets hill kills off horses speed and exposes their stamina, the race is meant too be about a very easy five furlongs. Newmarket were too thick too do what Longchamp do with the abbey, run it on a flat peice of ground.
The next two sprint group ones this autumn are run on flat tracks, last time i looked the July course at HQ had a dirt great hill, i wanted too see sprinters run up hills i would go watch the beverly bullet run on saturday..
August 22, 2008 at 22:42 #177740I don’t begrudge Borders a big-time victory, he really is a consistent beast.
BUT…this result really shows how little there is between the top sprinters..and how the gulf in class from quality handicapper to G1 over sprints is more easily met than longer distances….too easily perhaps?
How many class 2 handicappers come out next time and win G1’s over a mile or 12F”s?
And what happened to Sakhee’s Secret

And Captain Gerrard for that matter! (I backed him and he drifted like the proverbial barge pole)

But the reason for this is not that the top sprinters are inferior to the top 8f to 12f horses, it’s just that there are so many more opportunities for the middle distance brigade to run for big prizes in wfa Group races without having to go anywhere near handicaps.
For top sprinters, however, the disparity in prize money between the top handicaps and most of the Group races is not that great, so it often makes sense for sprinters to drop down to handicaps where there’s a big pot on offer.
August 23, 2008 at 01:39 #177755The first four home in the July Cup did not appear here. This crop of sprinters have been beating each other up for the past 2 years and are all just plain ordinary.
