One of the beaten horses that stuck out like a sore thumb in the Commonwealth Cup was Profitable. He travelled better than anything and was right in the thick of it at the furlong marker that day, only to weaken inside the final furlong. This strong travelling sort appears best suited by a frantic pace over the minimum distance and he could hit the frame at a big price tomorrow.
Clive Cox thinks a lot of him, and he certainly has a big race in him at some stage.
This guy is a machine. All he does is work out and pick winners. Talk about fit. You should see him without his shirt off, serious side of beef.

I have seen a couple of others who fancy Profitable at big odds and Muhaarar has certainly advertised the form. When you consider that nine of Profitable’s ten runs have come at 5f, the 6f of the Commonwealth Cup was always going to be a question mark, probably part of the reason he was a big outsider there.
If Profitable does win it will give a tinge of sadness to me, with my original selection, Waady, having beaten him comfortably on the two occasions they met.
Looking at the betting this morning I have to conclude that Acapulco is looking good at 5/2. The feather weight is screaming at me and the form looks solid. Besharah, who was third in the Queen Mary, has gone on to run one time 1000 Guineas favourite Illuminate very close before winning a group 3 and then yesterday’s group 2 Lowther in excellent style from the, then, new 1000 Guineas favourite, Lumiere. Queen Mary second Easton Angel also ran Illuminate close and then travelled just about best for a long way in the Lowther until ground and the extra furlong caught her out. I initially thought Illuminate had disappointed slightly with the proximity of some of her rivals in the old Cherry Hinton but with Besharah’s exploits since and the third Blue Bayou having won the group 3 Sweet Solera since, it seems that it was just a strong looking renewal.
Acapulco beat Besharah 4 lengths in the Queen Mary and that seems like it’s close to group 1 form to me. She is a huge filly with a small weight on her back and the sprinting division looks ripe for a new face to make a name for themselves, so it’s time to go Loco down in Acapulco.
Hard to say what price she will be, you could risk waiting to see if there is 3/1 available but I reckon 5/2 is worth taking for peace of mind. I think 6/4 is the realistic price come flag fall unless there is a bad vibe circulating.
Acapulco, confident selection at 5/2 or better if there’s any going.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 21, 2015 at 09:30 #1178118^^I backed two selections antepost, Steve. Profitable @40s and…Waady @14s!!
I was astonished to see that he had been taken out. Unbeaten over five furlongs, a winner on both fast and soft ground, progressing, form working out…he looked the type to be well supported on the day and an ideal antepost wager.
The best laid plans of mice and men…

Not much money for anything really and 11/4 on Acapulco now. Looks good to me at those odds and she’s probably got more potential improvement than anything else.
I’ll take Sole Power for second and Meccas Angel for third.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 21, 2015 at 14:18 #1178576Since 198O , the race has been won by two 2 year olds : Lyric Fantasy and Kingsgate Native.
With the best will in the world , neither of them could compare physically
with the “beast” , Acapulco .There is something quite freakish about the American filly. I mean that
in the nicest possible sense . She certainly doesn’t look or act
like a two year old. She looks more like a seasoned four old colt.Bearing in mind the allowances Acapulco will receive from the older horses ,
and considering the size and build of this filly , I for one, will
not be opposing her .Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
August 21, 2015 at 14:59 #1178633Absolutely delighted Ward’s Wonder Horse got beat.

…And jockeyship error makes it even better.
Value Is EverythingAugust 21, 2015 at 15:03 #1178634Great result; was screaming her home. Love it when small stables win things like this.
August 21, 2015 at 15:05 #1178648Mecca’s Angel was impressive!! Nice to see the pot staying here in YORKSHIRE!!!! Tha knows!!

The delay was annoying but it was the same for all of them and I thought Gina was exaggerating the effect of the hiatus on Acapulco. Graeme Cunningham didn’t think she would lead but he was incorrect. I suppose you could argue riding her with a bit more restraint might have helped but she just got tired on that ground today.
Muthmir has always been a muck or nettles sprinter for me and I didn’t fancy him at all today. I reckon that they missed a trick with Waady not running here.
Do you reckon any bookies will pay me out on a 1st 2nd and 4th combination tricast?

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 21, 2015 at 15:30 #1178688Got on at 8-1 but I was glad the ground was on the slow side of good as it made the difference today as Acapulco started to seriously paddle in the last half furlong – they just mentioned on RUK that she was taken out of the 2nd place enclosure pretty quickly as she look exhausted and has obviously given her all.
Providing she gets a decent draw and we get the usual soft ground at Longchamp, the Abbaye looks hers for the taking all though they are also stating she may go to Ireland for the Flying Five providing ground is suitable.
August 21, 2015 at 15:49 #1178706I don’t often get a buzz from shadenfeude but it was great to see Dodds’ horse with Paul Mullrennan get a top prize.
raymo61 ^ -, I’m from the Red Rose side of the Pennines but enjoyed you keeping your prized Nunthorpe at your home, ha ha.
I think many of us love it when the big boys get turned over.

She looks more like a seasoned four old colt.Acapulco might be a lot different to European two year olds H, but isn’t that different to other two year olds trained by Wesley Ward over the years. If not “massive”, he’s well known for “mature” two year olds. Jealous Again and No Nay Never to name two.
If anyone has Timeform Racehorses Of 2009 – the write up of Jealous Again is interesting. Particularly two paragraphs beggining with “The second twist”, including a Racing Post quote and “Bronchodilators such as clenbuterol”.
Value Is EverythingAugust 21, 2015 at 16:19 #1178729Although not a steroid, used frequently can have the same effect.
It is not illegal to use Clenbuterol in USA as long as it is out of their system by race day. It is illegal to use Clenbuterol in Europe.
According to the Racing Post, Wesley Ward had no less than 9 offences for Clenbuterol abuse between 2003 and 2009. Getting a 15 day suspension from training in 2009, suspension luckily starting just after Ascot.
Wesley Ward is on record as saying he trains all his US horses on Clenbuterol, because it aids breathing.
Value Is EverythingAugust 21, 2015 at 21:02 #1179130What a ride Paul Mulrennan gave Meccas Angel, pushing hard with the whole of his body he galvanized Mecca to overhaul the two year old and won going away. Meccas Angel has a blistering turn of foot and is as the trainer says,a serious horse.
Very pleased for them all, connections and the yard, they deserve a big win, it certainly made my day.February 19, 2016 at 10:03 #1234296Acapulco returns to action tonight in US.Trainer Wesley Ward says one more run after this, before a trip back to Royal Ascot(she won Queen Mary last season)
