Ready to kick off again, and as usual my season will run from Royal Ascot to Punchestown.
Enjoyed the break, and not really missed it being honest. Did a few perms when Ballinrobe was on, as I always bet when they’re racing, but bar that, two Antepost Bets for Ascot, and four other singles on the day, since last thread ended. I’m safely 0-4 after those bets with a couple of go’s on Euchen Glen, and a couple of Midnight debutants.
Elsewhere, can’t believe I missed Escobar winning, while Father Jed was a big winner that got away, after putting him up on last thread as one very much to follow.
Looking ahead, hoping to see Saint Roi and Stratum at Galway, but just wondering whether Frodon will be sent for The Plate, while I’m still mad keen on Remastered for The Ladbrokes Trophy. Not too many Cheltenham bets thankfully, while at this time, I’m hopeful that Stattler makes it to Aintree, along with Galvin and Delta Work
There were some crazy good days last season, and if I can get a fraction of them again this time around, I’ll be delighted.
First bet up on last thread was Sir Busker, and he’s first bet again. The 66’s was a mad old price I thought, and if he makes the three, I’ll be well chuffed.
Although I ended up swerving him in the end, I also gave Island Brave a nod in the first post last year, and though I’m kicking myself for missing the 66’s Antepost, I’m happy to have him on board now for The Copperhorse.
In The Ascot Stakes, I’ve went with Rock Eagle, who done me proud in the past. I was also tempted by old friends Proschema and Protected Guest, but I’m not kicking off with three selections in the one race.
I think that Berkshire Shadow is worth a chance in The St James Palace, for all its a tough enough assignment.
Queen Anne – Sir Busker 66’s EW 3pls
St James Palace – Berkshire Shadow 28’s EW 4pls
Ascot Stakes – Rock Eagle 16’s EW 7pls
Copper Horse – Island Brave 33’s EW 5plsJune 14, 2022 at 02:13 #1601887Antepost losers not in race thread
Juddmonte – State of Rest
St Leger – MartinstownJune 14, 2022 at 14:43 #1601962Good luck with the thread vtc
My bigger price pokes this week are Who Dares Wins, Etonian and SacredGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
June 15, 2022 at 11:53 #1602183Thanks Nath. Know you’re a huge fan of Sacred, so I’ll be cheering her on. Not cheering on Etonian as much as Sacred, as it’s The Hunt Cup, and the one race this week I want the winner of. Good luck mate with the pair of them
Nothing to write home about yesterday. Satisfied with the runs of Berkshire Shadow and Rock Eagle, comfortably getting my money back from the pair of them, but that swallowed up by Sir Busker, who was a bigger bet. Was very confident he could make the frame, but it looked unlikely from the off. Island Brave ran a nice race, and should pop up this summer.
Quieter day today. I think Neptune Rock looks a wee bit overpriced in The Kensington Palace, but being careful, and I’ll stick with a couple at the moment, as per race threads. I’ll probably cover Escobar, just in case, but only the two bets right now, and I’ll definitely top up Cruyff Turn
Prince of Wales – State of Rest 7’s
Hunt Cup – Cruyff Turn 25’s EW 8plsJune 15, 2022 at 23:47 #1602376Very happy to get off the mark today with State of Rest. Smashing ride he got too. My record of putting 2yo’s up on here is desperate, but he’s the one that bucked the trend, and he’s a smashing horse.
I ended up betting stablemate Neptune Rock in the last. No joy, but I was happy with her, and once they work her out, she’s winning a decent pot.
Cruyff Turn was the type of loser I like. Gave it best shot, beaten fair and square, with no excuses…….which brings me on to tomorrow’s main bet.
I really do think Chiefofchiefs should win The Buckingham Palace, and I’m just hoping I’m not cursing the ride afterwards. He doesn’t need produced from miles back, as seen in The Silver Wokingham. Everything crossed here, as he’ll be main bet of the week. Star of Orion should go well, but I’ll go with Ropey Guest as backup.
Princess Zoe is a horse o really like, and she’s a straightforward selection in Gold Cup, though anticipating a R4
Gold Cup – Princess Zoe 15-2
Buckingham Palace – Chiefofchiefs 14’s EW 7pls
Buckingham Palace – Ropey Guest 33’sJune 18, 2022 at 13:14 #1603024Sat yesterday out, as I was very “happy” with how Thursday went, and I kept the cash, as the races were a bit guessy for me. Really like Meditate, and her and Peggy Sioux were the pair that got away.
As expected, Chiefofchiefs given too much to do, complete mystery, but should be happy, as it was a fairly lumpy bet, and got me a fair old return even for the EW. Ropey Guest was a bonus, topped up at 65’s, and managed to just lay off by a couple of points.
Happy Thursday then, and that’s was the main reason for swerving Friday. Especially with so many on the go today.
Hardwicke – Lafayette 18’s EW
Jubilee – Gustavus Weston 250’s EW 6pls
Wokingham – Blackrod 9’s
Wokingham – Gulliver 22’s EW 8pls
Golden Gates – Sun King 12’s
Queen Alexandra – Falcon Eight 6’s
Queen Alexandra – Stratum 16’sJune 18, 2022 at 14:33 #1603073Good to see you back, VtC. Great selections, too, to start the year. However, I think your reticence about the ride of Chief of Chiefs is going beyond the call of duty. Spencer is notorious for holding up horses and I know a trainer who can’t abide him and calls him a “jaw breaker” out of the stalls. I think that the race was lost by Spencer’s tactics. I am at a loss to understand why he was chosen for Chief of Chiefs. Glad you profited, of course.
June 19, 2022 at 00:32 #1603236Thanks mate, really happy with that first week back. Since Punchestown ended, I watched the Ballinrobe meetings, and Euchen Glen’s races, and that was it, so was expecting to be a bit rusty.
Yeah, reticence sums it up nicely, and don’t know why I held back. It’s a weird one isn’t it. They persist with him for some reason, and he’s costing the horse races. I hate jockey bashing most of the time, but I called it beforehand, and he should’ve won that easily on Thursday. That was the main reason it was a fairly hefty EW bet. Anyway, was a nice lift, so I’ll (hopefully) leave it at that.
Chuffed today with Stratum, and still think of him as a Galway Plate horse. That would be a nice double.
As was the case last season, trying best not to bet too often needlessly, but back for more Sunday. Brian Boranha can put in a good round now and then, and he’s weighted to bounce back. Has performed well here before, and no concerns with ground. Took 14’s, but chance I might beat that.
1520 Hexham – Brian Boranha 14’s
June 23, 2022 at 21:06 #1603745Just having a proper look around again, good to see your thread back up + running Bobby.
Nice selections already!

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!June 24, 2022 at 17:29 #1603854Thanks Jack, much appreciated mate. Hope you are well.
Very pleased with that start last week, though I’d be much happier without selections like Brian Boranha.
Wasn’t too confident adding Gear Up, but I give him a chance in The Curragh Cup. I’d cooled on him as the day went on, but if he gets his own way, should he bang there.
Curragh Cup – Gear Up 6’s
June 25, 2022 at 12:07 #1604024Happy enough with Gear Up, and money comfortably back, as he went very low in running. Wasn’t that big a bet, but I’ll take it. Think I’ve got Jerry Hannon to thank for that one, as he was commentating as if it was in the bag. I thought Camorra was always getting there.
Had to be very careful today, as the shortlist had just too many on it.
Covered a few of these in “Big Races”, but at the moment, I’ve not actually bet Ainsdale, and I cashed out Island Brave. I’ll see how the 1400 at The Curragh goes, as I’ll have two in that race, old friend Surrounding, and Neptune Rock, who I was really happy with at Ascot.
In The Criterion, I thought Bass Player looked a bit overpriced on the Epsom run
1400 Curragh – Neptune Rock
1400 Curragh – Surrounding
Chipchase – Judicial EW 5pls
Criterion – Bass Player 14’s
Plate – Sir Chauvelin 33’s 7pls, 40’s
Irish Derby – Boundless Ocean 80’s EWJune 26, 2022 at 12:56 #1604341That was a real damp squib yesterday.
Schoolboy error with Ainsdale, and missed a decent EW. Judicial was second choice, and I did something I never do, and swerved Ainsdale because of price.
I bet a lot of Goldies, but never been interested in Sir Chauvelin. He wasn’t a strong fancy, and this was also something I try not to do, and having not picked anything else out, I just settled. Should have left race alone. He was terrible.
Not too upset with Boundless Ocean as he was an 80–1 shot.
None of them big bets, but topped up on Bass Player, and he looked a total monkey.
Three bets today, though currently chewing over Geordie Des Champs and Top Moon in same race at Uttoxeter.
Rockingham – Steel Bull EW 5pls, Exchange
Summer Cup – Romain De Senam 25’s EW 6pls
1555 Cartmel – Peregrine RunJune 30, 2022 at 12:40 #1604732Really happy with that from Romain De Senam, and got a decent return in running. Money back from Peregrine Run too, so good to be back on track after that poor Saturday.
Visibility wasn’t great for Steel Bull, so it’s hard to gauge just how bad a pick he was. I’m convincing myself that he was a staying on last.
One bet today, and went with Early Doors as the annual outsider in The Grimes Hurdle. Hoping if Saint Roi wins, he doesn’t win too well with The Galway Hurdle in mind.
Grimes Hurdle – Early Doors 40’s EW 4pls
July 2, 2022 at 14:05 #1604958As usual, the Annual “Outsider who’s getting prepped for Galway” approach didn’t work with Early Doors, who was indeed getting niggled along early doors.
Couple of bets today.
Really liked the look of The Cola Brasil last time, and happy to side with him at Naas. Problem here is that he’s now 8’s, and I took 16’s. Whenever I put up one after the price has gone, they always get beaten. Hope he bucks that trend.
In The Old Newton Cup, I went with Morando at 25’s, but didn’t top up EW, as not as soft as I’d hoped, and also decided to add Ravenscraig Castle.
Quite interesting later on are Jeremiah, and Regal Mirage, but I’ll see how the earlier bets go.
1433 Naas – The Cola Brasil 16’s
Old Newton Cup – Morando 25’s
Old Newton Cup – Ravenscraig Castle 33’s EW 6plsJuly 8, 2022 at 00:47 #1605873Happy enough with the run of The Cola Brasil, (won last night 8’s), but got what I deserved in The Old Newton Cup. A week after deserting original fancy Ainsdale, and missing a decent EW, I did it again with Morando. Just bloody stupid.
Always like a go in The Kilbeggan National, and still to split The Gigginstown pair of Battleoverdoyen and Hardline, but definitely with Freewheelin Dylan. Earlier on the card, I’m definitely chancing Waitnsee EW. (Decided to just go with Birchdale if Coach Carter doesn’t get in)
Off You Go looks a fair price at Cork, but he’s maybe another one to consider for Galway. Still tempted with him tonight though, and not ruling it out.
1850 Kilbeggan – Waitnsee EW 4pls
Mid National – Freewheelin Dylan 18’s
Mid National – BirchdaleJuly 8, 2022 at 23:05 #1606112Freewheelin Dylan was a bit disappointing, and looked beaten from the off, but delighted with Waitnsee, and a great effort in the saddle. Took the 20’s, and was happy with what looked like a place, but really dug it out.
Tomorrow’s bets all mentioned in Big Races Threads. WickywickyWheels an interesting one at Hamilton, but too short.
John Smiths Cup – Rogue Bear 14’s
July Cup – Cadamosto 50’s
July Cup – Romantic Proposal 20’s
City Walls – Justanotherbottle 14’sJuly 16, 2022 at 01:24 #1607141Very average last Saturday, with Rogue Bear particularly disappointing, and the Goldie horse winning, summed it up perfectly. Sigh
Patchy record in the two big races at Market Rasen, but as per race threads, giving them a go. Still deciding on Toronto in The Hurdle
Earlier on the card, I had to give a chance to Romain De Senam back over timber, for all I feel that he’ll get done by younger legs.
I’ve only missed Euchen Glen a handful of times in last few years. Didn’t bet him last run, but thought he showed he still had it. I’ll definitely bet him for The Ebor, so I’ll take a bit of 40’s beforehand today. As for this race today, I’m not sure, but the fact he’s double figures is enough for me, and I’ll go EW.
That’s enough for one day, but old favourites Rock Eagle and Stunning Beauty look competitive, for all they’re short enough, while notebook horse, Cabinet of Clowns catches the eye late on at Newmarket.
One who really caught the eye yesterday at Nottingham was Opertaing, and looks an interesting one for the Autumn
1406 Market Rasen – Romain De Senam 8
Summer Hurdle – Hurricane Ali 14’s
Summer Plate – Peregrine Run EW 5pls
Summer Plate – Manofthemountain 8’s
1541 Chester – Euchen Glen 14’s EW 4pls - AuthorPosts
