All about Fidaawy on Day 3, and as much as that 14’s was a smashing price, I just love the way he did it. Chuffed to bits.
No joy elsewhere though. Prince of Arran was poor yet again, and I can leave him alone now, while Sheikzhayed Road was not given the best of rides.
Washington DC never really got into it, but I got a run for my money from Mubtasim and Montataire. I was left without a runner in the 1610.
No complaints though, and what it all means is that regardless of what happens today, I’ll have my second winning Ebor Meeting in row, which I am more than happy with. I’ve had enough losing ones.
Pressure off then, but I’ll still have to be careful though, as there are more than a few fancies.
In the first, the obvious selction for me is Master Of The World did me a huge turn in The Betfred Mile, and I owe him plenty. Ryan Moore got him out of trouble that day, he tends to be a hold up horse, and last week in a listed event at Salisbury, he wasn’t so lucky. Don’t want to be too harsh on Pat Dobbs, but he was unable to come to the rescue, after the horse got boxed in. It cost him the race, he should have won easily, but what it did show is that he is still in the best of form, and I can’t desert him today (I didn’t bet him at Salisbury) and he looks big at 6’s. He’ll be win only at that price, and I’ll also be covering Forest Ranger ew at around 14’s. He’s impressed me a couple of times this year, and on one run in particular, he could make a mockery of those odds.
The Melrose is a cracker, and it may be advisable to not overthink it, as Bin Battuta looks a standout price at 8’s. Overthink I will though, and typically for a race like this, I’ll have more than one. It’ll almost certainly be Bush House, who’s huge at 25’s, but I’m equally drawn to Winston C & Tor, who are also tasty prices.
The Gimcrack isn’t really my type of race, but happy to be with Cardsharp again, and happy with 6’s.
I’ve given my thoughts on The Ebor in the race thread, and I’m with Ivan Grozny & Dubka. I would especially love Ivan Grozny to win, as he’s one of my very favourites, and I’ve never managed to nab the winner of this.
In The Rose Stakes, it has to be Bengali Boys. I was on him last time, when he blew the opposition away in The Super Sprint. I think he could be very good, and although this is tougher, he’ll surely be involved. I also bet Falabelle that day, and though he flopped, he’s stepped up since, and 40’s ew with 4 places is too good to refuse.
Like The Melrose, The Jack Berry House Handicap is a cracker, and I’m immediately drawn to Nicholas T at 20’s. I’ve put him up a few times, and quite simply, I reckon he’s horse who’ll be a staple in these big handicaps over the next few seasons. I like him for The Cambridgeshire, and another horse I also like for both races, is Weekend Offender. I’ve actually bet Bravery already for The Cambridgeshire, and he ran the perfect prep for that, here earlier in the week. I bet him to cover my Cambridgeshire stake that day, and I’ll do the same here. A repeat would do me nicely. I’ll definitely be with Spring Offensive here as well. Always thought he had a fair prize in him, and 20’s with 5 places will do for me.
The finale, The Apprentice Handicap, is a tricky looking affair, but I will be 3 handed in it. Holmsewood is a deserved favourite, most impressive recently, while Major Jumbo has been most consistent recently, and he looks underestimated at 12’s. A horse I’ve been tracking all season is Justanotherbottle, and though he’ll need everything to go his way, it’s not out of the question, and he looks well worth a try at around 20’s, and I’d love to see him blaze a trail.
That’s a lot of selections, so will be minimum stakes, and I’ll go higher if things go well. It has to be minimum stakes, as I have a few to look out for in Ireland as well, and that’s not to mention others elsewhere. It’s a busy busy day.
Cracking card at Killarney, and this is lifted from the Summer Jumping thread.
I really like that 1435, and Definite Soldier is crying out to bet at that price. 25’s too big. Abolitionist was a revelation last year. Good enough to land this, but I just wonder if this might actually be a prep run, and could we see him in The Kerry National? I’ll take a chance that is the case, and I might chance another two. Westland Row got back on track last time, after a poor show at Galway, and that 14’s looks generous. It’s easy to forget that Waaheb was the “next big thing” a few seasons back, and things obviously haven’t went to plan. I get the impression they haven’t got him back 100% yet, but I do believe he’s on the way back. Geraghty is up tomorrow, and this might be with a view to a future target, but he’s 20’s, and that’s way too big, and I want to bet him just in case.
Ancient Sands was a disaster of a selection for me in The Galway Hurdle, bringing down my main hope, Ivan Grozny, at the first. I thought he was an interesting outsider that day though, and if I can forgive him, then he does look appealing at 12’s.
The 1545 looks a cracker, and I favour Rathvinden, but I’ll gladly watch the top 3 do battle, without a bet. I reckon Sea Light won’t disgrace himself at 12’s either, but definitely a “no bet” race.
I’m loving this 1620 as well. My old pal Neverushacon is back out, and considering the manner of his win last time, I must have some sort of a bet at 4’s. Again, not my kind of price, but I’m a big fan of him, especially after last time. Devils Bride jumps out as well, and I’ll be covering him as well. He’s been one of the stalwarts of this thread, for both of us, and it would be great if we could get a win from him lol. Deans Road is a nice horse, and Ruby Walsh an eyecatching booking, but the one I’m also drawn to is The Winkler at 20’s, he has a decent claimer up, and I’ll cover him ew.
In the 1655, Santiago De Cuba could be a very nice type, but he is no type of price today, and he’ll be one for later.
As for elsewhere………..
At Goodwood, my main Ayr Gold Cup hope, Johnny Barnes re-appears. I’m hoping today isn’t the day, and if he can run a nice race, without winning here, I’ll bet him for Ayr afterwards. I also like Argenterie & Koeman at the track.
At Chester I like Ballesteros, and Royal Shaheen, and I’ll definitely be betting the former.
Finally at Cartmel, I have 2 horses who owe me nothing. Mighty Whitey was one of the highlights of the summer for me, when he won here going away at 25’s, and I can’t desert him, while Captain Brown won this last year, landing me a chunky treble in the process, and I’ll be with him too.
Quite simply, it’s a fantastic days racing, and goes without saying that it’ll have to be minimum stakes, only increasing, should I have any joy. To be honest, I’m expecting a bloodbath, as previous experience has shown me that when I have as many selections as this, they all tend to lose, that’s just the way it seems to go, don’t know if I tend to get “dazzled” by them all, and take my eye off the ball. If that is the case, I’m going to make sure it won’t be too costly. Bad enough losing a good few quid, without the added embarrassment of putting up a raft of losers as well. Still, it’s a day to savour, and I can’t wait. Looks as if there’ll be a few Trifectas kicking about too………….Been a cracking week though, it really has, not even counting last weeks winners, and I’d happily only have one winner today, and would it be too much to ask for it to be Ivan Grozny
August 27, 2017 at 01:53 #1315930Few losers about today, but some “nice” returns as well (well they would have been if my stakes hadn’t been as small lol)
No excuses for Master The World this time, but was very happy to have had Forest Ranger at the 14’s.
As I was keeping things under control, I left Bin Battuta alone, but was nearly kicking myself as he looked to have it in the bag. Unlucky, but he’s a horse I like, and I’ll definitely consider him again. Bush House was an also ran, but at least I got a run for my money from Tor.
As I said, The Gimrack not my race, but happy with the price I got for Cardsharp, and happy enough with his run.
Not much to say about The Ebor. Ivan Grozny was my biggest bet today, and sometimes you have to step back and admit one of your favourites isn’t as good as you thought he was, or in Ivans case, could have been. I think the injuries have taken their toll on him. I also have to accept that I will never have the winner of The Ebor.
Happy enough with Bengali Boys, and he should have a future, and this won’t be the last time I bet him, that’s for sure, but that may not be the case with Falabelle.
No joy in The Jack Berry, but there are still decent signs from Nicholas T. I didn’t bother covering Bravery in the end, and like the other day, I was very pleased with him with The Cambridgeshire in mind.
Best result today at York was Justanotherbottle, who was my only other decent sized bet at the track, and he got me a nice return at the 20’s, certainly a lot more than I got for Holmeswood who won in a dead heat. Two nice horses, and I reckon that JAB could develop into a real favourite of mine.
Elsewhere……………….
At Killarney, I ended up leaving the 1435 alone, just too many questions, and none the wiser about the original selections. I’ll be interested in Waaheb possibly in a decent handicap in the coming months.
Ancient Sands was very disappointing, and my 2 bets on him have been less than successful, and I doubt I’ll risk him again.
Very happy with the 1620, as got the 20’s each way on The Winkler, and thought for a brief moment that Devils Bride would do it. Grass, what’s your thoughts on Devils Bride, is he worth leaving now, or do you think he still has one in him. I’m torn either way. Finally, Neverushacon was poor, but I knew the story beforehand, when he drifted badly, and I wasn’t surprised. Didn’t stop me betting him though, but I’ll get that back next Spring/Summer.
Result of the day for me was Johnny Barnes, I was on him at 8’s, and also secured the 25’s for Ayr, absolutely delighted.
I swerved the Chester selections, missing 2 each ways in the process, and wish I had swerved Cartmel, as last I heard, my pair were still running lol
A very enjoyable week, and delighted to escape it ahead, and really enjoyed The Ebor Meeting, there’s definitely something about it, and along with Royal Ascot & Glorious Goodwood, all that is good with The Flat.
As per, coming out ahead means only one thing……….a few “fun” Sunday bets.
I’ve bet Landshark for The 2000 Guineas (on race thread), and have him at 11-2 tomorrow at The Curragh. I like the look of this horse, and hope he can put in a decent show.
Also at The Curragh, I like Aim To Please around 12’s, 14’s, while I’m particularly interested in Hibou, and have already taken the 12’s for him.
I also like Shaheen at Beverley, and Stanley, Salateen, and Solomons Bay at Goodwood.
A couple of these coming in would round the week off nicely, been a good 7 days.
August 28, 2017 at 02:06 #1316017Shaeen won at nice price today, and Salateen was a nice each way, even with the R4, but unfortunately my 2 biggest bets of the day were Hibou & Landshark, and that made it a losing day for sure.
I’ll try to have a quieter time of it this week, even after a fairly good time of it the last week or so, but had a quick look at the Bank Holiday Cards, and the jumpers who caught my eye were Brave Spartacus, Pads, Masterson, and Mitebeall Forluck.
Brave Spartacus is no back number, and interesting with Brian Hughes up, while Masterson bumped into Fabulous Saga last time, a horse of WPM’s I have big hopes for, and I think Mitebeall is too big a price, track should suit, and I’d rather have him before a few ahead of him in the market.
Quite like Home Cummins, and Midnight Malibu on The Flat as well.
August 29, 2017 at 01:54 #1316096Very happy with that yesterday, and they all made the frame, and with decent bets on Brave Spartacus, Midnight Malibu, and Mitebeall Forluck, all at nice prices, it was a decent day.
Especially happy with Brave Spartacus, as I got him much bigger than his SP of 5’s, and I was fairly confident the whole way round. I know him pretty well, he gave me a smasher of a payday 2 years back in The Summer Plate, and despite being at a relatively small yard, she’s done incredibly well with him, and has him back to near his best.
I was a little concerned about Midnight Malibu stepping up into a Class 2, but I thought she was tailor made for Epsom, and though the late withdrawal of the favourite didn’t do her any harm, I reckon she would have won anyway.
September 2, 2017 at 12:15 #1316477Thanks Botchy, hopefully we can have a winner or 2 this year, it’s so difficult, and that’s all we can ask for, anything else is a bonus

Love Codelco, and as for Samcro, he just has to be decent this year surely. Obviously my Champion Hurdle bet is “pie in the sky” stuff, and he surely takes a hand in one of the 2 big Novice Hurdles.
I’m not one for 9’s, 10’s Ante-Post, but Cause of Causes does look a no brainer for The Cross Country, though I would just love to see him in The Gold Cup, just the once, to see how gets on.
Initially, I wasn’t 100% with Tiger Roll for Aintree, but I’m mad keen on him now, he’s my clear #1, and already chipping away.
September 8, 2017 at 18:22 #1316965Lifted from Summer Jumpers
I’ve had a go on King of Brega at 16’s. In the 1755, I like Sir Abbot, and Bitview Colin, and I just slightly favour the former at 20’s. Finally, Chesterfield King in the last is a bit of a stab in the dark, but I’ll risk 5’s.
September 9, 2017 at 00:19 #1317002Very happy with Sir Abbot tonight, he’s definitely worth considering when he inevitably goes over the larger obstacles. Nice price tonight, and very glad I played tonight. I was only having a bet tonight as I fancied Cecil Corbett (NR) and King of Brega (Withdrawn), both in the 1825, so was very lucky.
Back to Sir Abbots race, and the winner, Jaime Sommers was very very impressive, and on that performance, he could easily have a very decent season, he seemed to have loads in hand.
On to Saturday, and I’m off to Haydock, and really looking forward to it. Very apprehensive though, as although I’ve had loads of great days at the Races, all my trips South of the Border to Flat Meetings, have ended in abject failure. The worst was York 2 years back when I went for The Friday & Saturday, and barely had a horse placed over the 2 days. Please let it not be as bad as that.
I’ll try not to lose too much, but hey, it’s a day out, so if I lose a few quid, no harm done, and a few of the races I wouldn’t be betting in otherwise, so I’ll have a go anyway.
1320
Curlew River – I don’t think the conditions will be as hard work for him as a good few of the others, so around 10’s, he’s the pick.1350
Yabass – I really liked Dee Ex Bee at Goodwood and thought he could be very decent, but he got stuffed, and with no obvious excuses either. Not a race to grab the attention too much, but I’ll go for the outsider Yabass, who surely is better than a 14’s chance. If he could grab second that would be great.Sprint Cup
On Brando @ 5’s to win, and Growl up to 66’s each way. It would be great if they both gave me a run, and obviously Growl placing will pay more than Brando winning. Fairly hopeful of a decent showing from the pair of them.1500
Holmsewood won for me at York last time, and he’s hard to desert here. This race though is all about Midnight Malibu for me. I’m obviously no stranger to her, and she gave me a very nice sum last time. Ground conditions probably against her, but I’ll be playing with Skybet, who are 4 places. I’ve only seen 2 of my Midnight bets “live”, Midnight Rider on that very unsuccessful weekend at York 2 years ago, and Seeyouatmidnight when he won at 200’s for me at Hexham, which now seems like a very long time ago. I would love a repeat of Hexham, but weather conditions might mean a repeat of York.Superior Mile
I’ve went for Flaming Spear to win at 10’s, and I think he can handle this grade without too much difficulty. Comes here in preference to Ascot.1610
I’ve already bet Jaameh at 12’s, and I thought was far too big. Very confident of a place at least.1645
I could have bet most of these, but with conditions likely to be very hard going, it shouldn’t really inconvenience Winston C too much, and happy to chance 12’s.I’ll keep costs to a minimum, and try to avoid the other meetings.
At Ascot,Von Blucher & Remarkable in The Cunard Handicap. 5 Places available for this race, and Von Blucher is the main fancy, he’s ran well all season. Remarkable will be win only.
In the 1640 at Thirsk, I like Ancient Astronaut at 12’s, and Secret Missile at 16’s, but they might only bet if I have any joy earlier on in the day.
Cunard Handicap
Von Blucher, Remarkable-£134.20
September 10, 2017 at 14:11 #1317171Dismal stuff then yesterday at Haydock with only my ew 12’s Jaameh to show for it. Not unduly concerned though, as bar the 2 big races, I did keep everything under control.
Smashing time of it at Ascot with Remarkable, who I got at 14’s, and Pettochside (forgot to put him up apologies), who I got at 7’s, and that Remarkable bet made a huge difference to my day. If I hadn’t stupidly did an exacta on each race at the course, then it would have been a winning day for me. Still, I was very grateful for those 2 at Ascot, as, predictably, things went pear shaped at Haydock.
I won’t dwell on the other 5 races, as no way would I have been betting on them if I hadn’t been at the course.
Not worried at all about Brando as that was a small bet, but most of the damage was done by Growl & Flaming Spear, who I had a few quid on. I had initally taken Growl at 50’s, and topped up on the next morning at 66’s. That was pure greed. I didn’t pay enough attention to his lifeless Ripon run, when I was very glad not to have bet him. I do think that when a horse you really like runs a poor one, you’re more inclined to overlook it and forgive them. I’ll swerve him for a while now, and though that might blow up in my face, as he will get in the money soon, as much as I’ve always liked him, I don’t want him to be a “cliff” horse, I’ve got enough of them. As for Flaming Spear, he was just terrible.
I left the Thirsk race alone thankfully.
A proper bullet dodged then, and although the action here today is pretty tame, there’s plenty going on in Ireland, and having come out of yesterday relatively unscathed, I’m playing again.
I’ve went for Ice Age at 10’s in the opener at The Curragh, win only, as he looks very overpriced, and I’ve had a go, and managed to steal a bit of the 28’s 5 places for Poyle Vinnie.
Really happy to risk Caspian Prince ew at 7’s, in the 1505, and in the 1725, happy with a win bet on Snazzy Jazzy at 6’s.
The 1755 is my kind of race, and I’m definitely taking The Mouse Doctor & Maudlin Magdalene. The Mouse Doctor really caught my eye last time, while I bet Maudlin Magdalene in her last run over timber. She ran very nicely I thought for a way, and I’d be fairly confident she can run well in this again. I’ve taken the 18’s already, and considering topping up. I haven’t bet Mouse yet, as he is going up and down, and I’ll try to nab as big a price as possible. Both ew.
Listowel is a smashing card, and I’ll be with Kylecrue in the 1700, and though it is a hot race, I’ve had a go. I managed to nab 10’s, and I’ll have a “fun” bet on Slainte and Thanks at 33’s+ in the 1550 ew. He has “slivers” of form, which will make me risk a small go on him. Only interest on these shores will be Hope Solo in the last York at 14’s.

Cracking stuff VTCSeptember 10, 2017 at 17:29 #1317225Cheers Grass, chuffed to bits with Kylecrue, had a proper go on him, and even better to get in a Trifecta early doors.
September 10, 2017 at 23:48 #1317269Very very happy with how today went, with Ice Age, and Kylecrue coming in, and both of them being main bets.
As I said, I did have a go on Ice Age at the 10’s, but I was just a little surprised at how straightforward it was. I liked the price, but thought there would have been a few pressing him at the end. That’s the third or fourth time I’ve bet Poyle Vinnie since he made me a few quid a couple of years back. I don’t want him to become too costly, so I’m not sure I’ll side with him again.
Snazzy Jazz was a smaller bet, but I’ll take that 6’s. I was really impressed with his attitude, the way he came back after being headed, and looking beat. You don’t see that too often, and I’ll definitely be with him again for sure.
Kylecrue was another fair sized bet for me, and not the first time I’ve put him up here. Absolutely chuffed to bits with him, and he won it a lot easier than the winning distance suggested. I mentioned on The Kerry National thread that he had a solid ew chance there, and he didn’t disappoint today. I won’t be in a rush to write him off too quickly at Limerick next month, and he’ll remain one to consider for that meeting. I was a little fortunate with the trifecta, as Bilko would have been a clear third if he hadn’t fallen, but I’ll take it. Horrible fall for Bilko, and just glad he got up from it.
Hope Solo ran a sound race for me at price in the finale at York, and I should have had a saver on Major Jumbo, who I had in the exacta, but not to be, he was a nice price as well. The bet on Slainte and Thanks was that small in the end I shouldn’t have bothered, and although he was prominent for a while, he was easily brushed aside. Caspian Prince was a fairly small bet as well, but in hindsight, it was madness to be against Caravaggio. I didn’t have as much on The Mouse Doctor in the last, as I missed the price, but the flipside of that, is that I put more on Magdalene, and neither troubled the judge.
All in all, a very nice day, best for a while, and very happy with how things are going.
I always play the next day if I’ve won, or had a close shave (like yesterday), but I’m struggling just a bit. At a push, and if he’s still around 11’s, then maybe Kemboy, but it might be better to sit it out.
Looking forward to The Kerry National this week, but although Temptestatefloresco is still there, the going looks very demanding, and I’ll understand if connections don’t send him. If that were the case, it’ll be a couple of smaller bets on the day. A race I always like to have a go on, but just struggled a bit with it this year, and my bet on Tempest isn’t the biggest, while it was a very small go on Abolitionist. With so many ifs and buts, it would be madness to lose too much cash on it.
September 13, 2017 at 00:14 #1317432After that very Super Sunday, it would have been easy to have a go Mon/Tue, that is certainly my usual approach, but I’m glad I sat it out, as I would have struggled.
I’ll have a go on Wednesday though.
Full of trepidation for The Kerry National, but I’m fairly confident of a good run from Potters Point, and got everything crossed for Temptestatefloresco. A Toi Phil is in there as a win only saver, and that saver will cover the sheer number of horses in there who will be getting the odd pound here and there (to soften the blow should they win, so many faves in there).
The race after The Kerry National is really interesting for me. The Albert Bartlett isn’t a race I spend too much time on Ante-Post, but I have 2 big fancies for it at the moment, in the shape of Young Turk & Fabulous Saga, and they both meet up here. Can’t wait to see how they get on with each other (no doubt they’ll both get beat now lol). I reckon they’ll both make the perms, but no chance I’d be betting either of them on their own.
That’s it though for Listowel, and I’ll turn my attention the Flat Action on these shores, where a few catch my attention, especially at Carlisle.
In the opener, The Auld Hoose, at around 16’s, looks worthy of a chance at that price, and in these conditions, especially with 4 Places available. In the next, I’m hoping the jock’s 3lb claim can keep Ventura Secret competitve at around 11-2. Soldier To Follow in the next isn’t my kind of price, but he looks worthy of risking for the perms. Lavetta is a horse I’ve bet a few times, and I thought she travelled well for a long way at York, looking more like her old self. I reckon she’s overpriced here, she’s very much worth a go on her own, and I’ve taken 14’s.
In the second race at Doncaster, I like Rum Runner at around 5’s, lot’s to like about that last run. Last but not least is one of my absolute favourite Flat horses, in Singeur. I’ll probably know my fate earlier on the card, as if it rides too testing he’ll struggle, and I can’t see the trace escaping the rain. I’m having a go though, and he’s fresh from giving me a decent EW lift at Ripon last time. Hopefully there’ll still be 5 places available, and he’s been as good as ever this year, so I’m hopeful at 10’s (weather permitting)
September 13, 2017 at 11:01 #1317459As you mention Carlisle, did you notice Ypres is a NR – due to Heavy ground!!
September 13, 2017 at 15:52 #1317504Surely the mud would have been perfect for Ypres GM!!!
The going certainly put paid to Lavetta’s participation, which is a shame, as I was very keen on her too.
September 14, 2017 at 00:22 #1317576Absolutely delighted with Potters Point today. I had found the race quite tricky to take a hard stance with in the lead up, but as I said on The Race Thread, I had a few quid on, and what a finish, best for a while. What can I say about Lisa O’Neil, she has been just superb for me the last 12 months, and I must invite her out for a Nando’s very soon.
It was great to continue the good run today, and although a small bet, I was happy with how Ventura Secret did it at Carlisle.
I was disappointed that Lavetta was a Non Runner, as I was planning a go, and although I eventually left Soldier To Follow out of things, I did bet the others, and they were in the main disappointing. I was hacked off with myself with Singeur. He went 14’s before the off, and although I knew that the ground was clearly against him, I topped up.
As for the jumpers, not worried at all about Tempestatefloresco, as I knew my fate before the off, and I just wonder as to whether connections will regret sending him over for this. Young Turk looks highly unlikely to be lining up at Cheltenham based on that showing, but I’m increasingly optimistic that Fabulous Saga could be a star this year, and was happy with him again today.
All in all a very good day then, and after Sunday, I’m in a very good position to play the rest of the week. Nice mixed bag on Thursday, and lots of decent types about.
The Handicap Hurdle at Listowel is a strong race, and my old pals Swamp Fox & Western Boy both line up. Western Boy was slightly disappointing at Galway, but that can’t be said for Fox. I really do think that Swamp Fox could be competitive in a “non vintage” Champion Hurdle, though it would probably have to be very Non Vintage, and I think that The Cesarewitch might just be his race. Either way, a win here obviously won’t affect his chances at Newmarket, and he’s to be taken seriously at around 5’s. Western Boy on his day, could make a mockery of the 14’s. To make matters even more confusing, Top Othe Ra & Timi Roli are also in there at 8’s and 18’s, and both look overpriced to me. I’m still not sure how to play this one
Elsewhere at Listowel, I’m sure I was keen on West Coast Time in The Bumper at The Festival, and he’ll make any perms I do, while in the last, I will definitely be risking Chain Gang, who if good to go, I really think should be half the price. I’ll definitely bet him on his own, in fact I may just take the 8’s just now.
Some interesting types at Doncaster tomorrow, and in the opener, Hoofalong looks the obvious choice, and though there is a chance he’s regressing, Adam’s Ale is worth risking at around 28’s, that might look a crazy price after the race. There is no chance that Dubka would have won for me in The Ebor, but she did meet some trouble, and wasn’t as bad as the overall losing distance would suggest. I’ll probably add her and the very short priced What A Home to any perms.
It’s very rare that I pay attention to 2 year olds, but I did put up Bumptios a couple of years back, and after being posted missing, I’m happy with how he’s coming along now, and he’s interesting back in a handicap at Epsom tomorrow, while at Chepstow, a real outsider I like is Turnbury. He’s around 33’s, but he can put in the odd encouraging run, and I’ve had some nice returns from him in the last year or so. I’m having a few quid at that price, and I’ll also bet to lay in running.
Happy to play then on Thursday, and happy with how things are going overall. As I said earlier, particularly pleased with how things stand after Sunday and Wednesday, and looking forward to a few days “no pressure” betting.
September 15, 2017 at 00:35 #1317691Chuffed to bits with Turnbury today, and he kept me ahead nicely, not only bagging a place at 33’s, but giving me a very nice trade as well. I really like this horse, and quite why he’s always a big price I just don’t know.
I’ve had a few horses like Turnbury over the years, the likes of….
Monkerhostin
Quito
A New Story
Heartbreak City
First Avenue
Double Ross
Aranhill Chief
Cause of Causes……horses who, for whatever reason, are continually overpriced, and always worth a try. Ok, Turnbury isn’t in the same league as those, but long may it continue.
He made a huge difference, as there wasn’t much else happening.
Adam’s Ale almost got me the perfect start, but just couldn’t keep it going to the end, and the opposite was true of Hoofalong, who was doing his best work at the end. No complaints though, and both ran their race.
I had no option in the big handicap hurdle at Listowel, I had no option to split my stake 3 ways, and with all 3 in contention turning for home, it was looking good, especially Western Boy, who was my main fancy, but neither he, nor Swamp Fox & Top othe Ra, could quite keep it up. I will continue to consider all 3 of them, and happy enough.
The only other horse I bet on his own was Chain Gang. As I said, I thought he was a false price, and confidence was high as the market seemed to agree, but he eventually finished out the frame.
The perms were down, but What A Home won, and West Coast Time & Bumptious place, but I was let down just a little (again) by Dubka.
I was playing on the Friday anyway, but having kept ahead on the Thursday, I’ll throw a couple of extra pounds on, as I definitely “got away with it”, thanks to Turnbury.
Starting at Doncaster, in the 1350, I really like the way that Whatsthemessage got it done last time, and though this is a different ball game altogether, I cannot resist a tilt at him, regardless of the price. I’ve taken 50’s win, and 40’s ew 4 places. I’m never a fan of putting up unraced types, as it’s essentially guessing, but I will chance Ace Ventura at around 7’s in the 1605, as he’s from a top yard, and though he’s hardly the subject of confident market vibes, I’ll take a chance. I’ve did really poorly this year in these type of Races, but I’m chancing High Jinx at around 16’s. He’s ran very well in this before, and though getting on a bit, off the back of a long lay off, I’ve seen signs of his old self, and happy to have him each way here. When I seen the field for this, I was, genuinely, just pleased that Prince of Aran wasn’t in there………….
….and then I seen him entered at Salisbury tonight. Really happy with him at Ascot in The Gold Cup, and thought he had a live chance at Goodwood, but he was very poor, and wasn’t much better at York. This might be more like it for him, and having lost a few quid on him at Goodwood, it’s very much a recovery mission.
Over at Listowel, I really like the outsider of the field in the big chase, Dromnea, who’s available at 20’s. If on song after a break, that is a massive price, and happy to have a go on him at that price ew. Bet him many times before, and he’s a likeable type, though I’m aware he may have a handicap in his sights later in the year. One more try at the track, and Stucker Hill looks too big at 8’s in the last. I think she had excuses last time, and with Jamie Codd up this time, that looks a fair price.
