Entered in the 2m 2f Pheasant Inn Novices Chase at Newbury on 16th Jan. It would be nice to see one of the festival winning novice hurdlers from the 06 season eventually jump a fence in public. Big talent if the injury hasn’t cost him.
January 11, 2008 at 23:12 #134715Yer, hope the injury has cleared well and a good performance is put in. Good Luck to him anyway!
January 11, 2008 at 23:21 #134718Would like to think he will go close to winning the Arkle if he’s came back 100%. Not much better candidates IMO.

Have to admit I think Pedrobob looks a quite decent chaser. Will improve for better ground I think and is quite an attractive price. I also like the look of Glencove Marina, he looks a live contender for the Sun Alliance.

January 14, 2008 at 10:49 #135021That was much, much more like it from Glencove Marina yesterday, wasn’t it, JohnJ! I wondered beforehand if he was still struggling to get an unhappy time of it at Auteuil last summer out of his system – it looks like he has now.

I don’t think you can just do a like for like comparison between hurdles and chase ratings, though I am sure you are aware of this. Pedrobob had plenty in hand in beating Wins Now when they met at Leopardstown over Xmas.
I do hope Glencove Marina goes for the Sun Alliance, though I think Mullins may aim him at the Arkle, he will reappear in the Dr PJ Moriarty at Leop on Hennessy day. GC, he travelled and jumped very well, looks very promising.

January 14, 2008 at 12:26 #135035Johnj, using hurdle ratings as a rule of thumb especially the higher up in grade you go, the more it is franked when horses go chasing I have found.
Moscow Flyer went chasing of a mark of 151, and usually any novice chaser taking a 150 + hurdle rating over fences is to be talen very seriously.
I think the past couple of seasons have seen very poor crops of Irish novices in the main, over both hurdles and fences. I dont think Glencove Marina beat a lot the last twice and we will have to wait and see how good he is when he contests a championship event at Cheltenham.
I dont know what race you watched, but approaching the last McCoy was yet to go for everything on Wins Now. If he had jumped it clean who is to say he would not have exploited Pedrobob’s pwn momentum stopping blunder?
In short Pedro and Glencove are yet to prove they are up to winning championship events on the biggest stage. Noland has.
Mansun,
You can use this ruke of thumb all you like, however there are always exceptions to the rule, Iris’s Gift, Crystal D’Ainay and Limestone Lad spring to mind from the staying division and I am sure I could list many more.
I agree Glencove Marina has not beaten much, however the manner he did in was quite striking for a novice in only his second chase start. And if you apply your logic he has beaten some decent hurdlers last year in his novice season, including Aitmatov and Sizing Europe. So I think he looks quite useful IMO.
As for the race in Leopardstown, Carberry had plenty in hand in that race you should watch it again, he just hunted Pedrobob around, and asked for an effort at the last. As for winning a championship race, he won perhaps the most competitive handicap hurdle ran last season, the County Hurdle. Sometimes these handicaps eclipse the best novice form, but thats just my opinion. However, I am looking forward to seeing Noland’s chase debut and hopefully he is as good as he was over hurdles, which of course will make for a great festival race.

January 14, 2008 at 13:25 #135056Mansun,
The ground yesterday was terrible, how do you know Wins Now didn’t handle the ground, bit ridiculous to say he didn’t frank the form! Pedrobob was not put into the race in which Perce Rock won, as you have said yourself he was publicly schooled.
I do agree, I don’t think there is strength in depth in the Irish novice chasing division, however I do think the two horses I have mentioned are exceptions.
