You might be right, but I did see the following in the Metro on the bus. Its not in the main part, but in the letters page.

In their reaction to the Fatalities at THE GRAND NATIONAL Emma Richards and Dawn Biram need to put their statistics about horse racing deaths into perspective (These two must have had letters printed the previous day).

Overall, about 2 in every 1000 runners are fatalites, according to the BHA.
Flat and All Weather racing accounts for around 0.6 fatalities per 1000 runners, Jumps racing for just over 4 fatalities per 1000 runners. In 2010, the deaths of race horses in all spheres accounted for 0.25% of all runners.

The welfare of the horses is paramount to owners, trainers, and course officials. If the ground is too firm for a horse, its trainer will not let it run. Independant vets can prevent a horse from running and the RSPCA has an open invitation to all racecourse in Britian.

How would those against THE GRAND NATIONAL propose to make it safer without banning it? :? If you lower the fences, the horses go faster increasing the risk of injury.

THE GRAND NATIONAL is a one off event, generating media hype every year, yet the same media then condemns the race the following Monday. Instead of regurgitating the Animal Aid spiel, I suggest critics spend 5 minutes doing research to see the quality of life race horses have at stables and at the racecourse.

This letter was sent to the Metro by Daniel Wilson

A very good, well educated and written letter.
