1-7 SP, fell at the third……..first of all, what a ridiculous price, and second, there are no guarantees at all in jump racing!
December 8, 2009 at 12:56 #262714Racing has A nak of doing that occasionally.
(sorry).

Why was an SP of 1/7 ridiculous?
He had winning form on soft ground in Ireland, won in an absolute canter in similar conditions at Plumpton, had Tony McCoy (who boasts a 46% strike rate for Jim Best) in the saddle and was travelling like much the best horse in the race when coming down at the third-last.
Betting at short odds-on requires some degree of madness, but as such horses go Anak was priced pretty fairly.
December 8, 2009 at 13:41 #2627231/7 at a difficult track as mentioned, with 5lb penalty on testing ground, made two or three bad mistakes when he won at Plumpton last time and wasn’t at all fluent, in probably a worse race that this, up against three completely unexposed types in Comprimario from a stable notorious for its exploits, Stormy Morning a flat winner, and Maskateer also from the flat who could improve infinitely over hurdles….1/7 with these factors considered was a crazy price IMO, just that McCoy was booked also.

For anyone who didn’t fancy the beast there was plenty to lay at his prohibitive odds.December 8, 2009 at 15:49 #262755Anak won easily on his hurdling debut in similar conditions at Plumpton with McCoy in the saddle. He beat Won In The Dark (rated 157 over hurdles) by 6L on his final start on the flat.
Anak was the higest rated flat recruit in todays field (83). The next best was Stormy Morning (62) who was making his debut over obstacles after a two month absence.
The two remaining flat recruits have shown very little ability and the eventual winner was well beaten on his hurdling debut.
He was entitled to start long odds-on, although I would say he appears to be a bit of a quirky character.
Shame he didn’t win, really. One of those horses who would quietly go about learning his trade at smaller venues before appearing at Cheltenham in something like the Fred Winter.
Still, a nice prospect.
