French jockey Nicolas Dieu has been killed in a car crash yesterday. 25 year old Dieu was driving from Strasbourg, where he was work riding, and lost his life when his car collided with a truck on the French/German border. Dieu was a well known face at Strasbourg and also neighbouring courses in Germany, and was a regular visitor to courses such as Mannheim, Hassloch and Baden-Baden. Although without a winner this season, this likeable lightweight rider always gave his best, and I remember seeing him haul a 50-1 rank outsider to second place in Baden-Baden a couple of years ago. This season, Dieu steered the Heinz Hesse trained Firebird to third place in an 11,000 Euro handicap in Saarbruecken in May, and was set to ride at Erbach next week.
Nicolas Dieu was not the most famous or most successful of jockeys, but this Frenchman was a welcome visitor to Germany and always gave value for money wherever he rode. A sad loss for both French and German racing.
