I can no longer listen to Nick Luck any more when Paul Nicholls has a runner in a race, I have to turn the sound down. Has he got some affinity to the stable? I’m fed up of his drooling and extended dialogue whenever Nicholls is mentioned. Even when PN has a runner down the field he spends more time talking about the Nicholls horse than the winner.
Perhaps it’s me, maybe I just don’t like the chap, he seems to be popular with others!!February 2, 2008 at 19:49 #139798I can understand your reaction to Nick Luck, but you have to admit he is very smooth and he keeps himself very well-informed.
A consummate professional with some annoying vocal ticks?!

February 2, 2008 at 21:01 #139816I only really appreciate the whole "Team" moniker in instances where a training operation has passed from one generation of the family to the other, yet the location and functioning of that operation has stayed essentially the same.
For the purposes of writing 10 year trends pieces, for example, I tend to favour referring to "Team Pipe" as one entity, rather than trying to split the stats according to Martin and David.
As regards Nick Luck, I suppose I can see how he may polarise opinion, but my God I’d sooner have him doing what he does (which is always backed up by more than adequate knowledge of the subject at hand) than contenting himself with dull, monosyllabic delivery. Why have one of the richest, most expansive languages on the planet at our disposal, only to use so little of it?

Given that the English language is highly dynamic, and given that the English language has been ‘stealing’ the best from the opposition since the beginning of time, why only "one of the richest"?
February 2, 2008 at 21:16 #139821Just according myself a bit of leeway there, Jim, in case any speakers of Latin, Russian, Esperanto, LOLcat, Klingon or lord knows what else took issue.

… ah, Klingon, of course. Well said.
February 2, 2008 at 22:20 #139844I think Nick Luck and a number of other RUK staffers should sign up as a members of the Plain English Campaign. They all seem to have devised a kind of RUK speeeeeek with a series of over used words and phrases;
on debut
attritional
notwithstanding
a very large pinch of salt
one to take out of the raceFebruary 2, 2008 at 22:28 #139845I’ve always thought Nick Luck was one of the best presenters out there and his more wordsmith based approach was good. However, there can be a time when it does almost appear to be used for the sake of it?
February 3, 2008 at 11:08 #139878to be honest i find them all as bad as each other!
Havin met Nick years ago at a p2p, he still speaks the same way!

February 3, 2008 at 19:35 #139957I was once told the Hungarian language is one of the most difficult and complex in existence.
By an English/Hungarian translator just as he passed you his bill?
February 4, 2008 at 09:07 #140016I was once told the Hungarian language is one of the most difficult and complex in existence.
I think I’d go along with that – of all the recognised languages spoken in Europe, only Hungarian and Finnish are completely divorced from the family of Indo-European / Indo-Germanic language varieties.
Although primarily a Germanist, I’ll try to have a crack at most lingos when travelling the continent, but I was unusually completely defeated when visiting Budapest 18 months ago.
I could be in for a fun old time when I go back there in August for the Sziget Festival… unless anyone here could teach me the Magyar for "Stuff this Nu-Metal abberation, when are Gogol Bordello coming on?" in good time, please?

February 4, 2008 at 09:46 #140028I like Nick Luck- his obvious enthusiasm for the sport shines through even during the cold midwinter meetings. He also realises his own knowledge is not as complete as that of most of his co-presenters and defers to them graciously. About the best of the "anchor-men" I’d say.

You could always try the equivalent of:
‘My hovercraft is full of eels’
or
‘Drop you panties Sir William, I cannot wait ’til lunchtime’.
If I remember, it seemed to work well in a reverse sense some years ago!
