    Fair play

However i must remind you one more time

    We are free people

Restrictions however mild or strong are still restrictions on our civil liberties and freedom we were granted at birth

Two world wars later people are surrendering the freedoms that previous generations gained for us

I will not under any circumstances agree to meekly let this gov AND LABOUR
    , take myfreedoms away

“Unfortunately, the first Omicron death has been recorded today.”

How old was the victim? Did they have other health conditions?

“And I see that insane canard that we are ‘turning into Nazi Germany’ based on some modest restrictions has reappeared.”

Modest restrictions for now. But are even these restrictions justified? Should we be organising the whole of our society on the precautionary principle and extreme worse case scenarios?

And what if mandatory vaccination is introduced, which will be inevitable if the government decides so because you can be absolutely sure that Starmer – a former human rights lawyer – will not oppose it.

If you allow the principle that the government owns your body and can tell you what to do with it, you are no longer free. And the accusations of being under a fascist regime which have been bandied about will no longer look quite so inaccurate.

    A very sobering thought Cork

I hope the restriction supporters consider just where this may lead to

The future will be permanent lockdowns in some form or other

Owning and driving a car will be banned unless its an electric one

We have to stop the compliance

    Its that simple

    Govs are employed by us

Why are we allowing dystopia to become a reality?

Give authoritarian politicians an inch and they will take a mile. If mandatory vaccination was introduced, does anyone think it would end there?

Anyone who is relaxed about it should bear in mind Martin Niemoller’s words:

“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.”

WE’re no where near as bad as Nazi Germany and to suggest that is utter nonsense.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

“Omicron is more transmissable but on current evidence the symptoms are not as severe”.

    Emphasis on “CURRENT EVIDENCE”.

We know it is more transmissible, that’s a fact.

But what if the limited evidence about it being less dangerous is wrong?

Limited evidence suggested we wouldn’t get a pandemic – because we hadn’t had one for many decades – and with such a small chance it was thought we didn’t need PPE. That gamble didn’t pay off.

It isn’t easy to compare South Africa with Europe / UK.

We know that most deaths from covid are in the over 65s.
Percentage of population over 65 years old in South Africa is 5.5%.
Percentage of population over 65 years old in the UK is over three times as much, at 18%.
South Africa is a hotter country than UK and we know Winter is more dangerous.
More of the South African population works outdoors.
Far more of the population in SA lives in rural areas.
The more populated the area is the more people get covid.
Rural houses (where more people live in SA) have more wind blowing through… And we know ventilation (opening windows while indoors here) is important.
Large population areas are further apart and the population is far less mobile than in Europe.

NO. The first omnicrom death was NOT recorded today. It was the death of someone with Covid. For all we know they might have been hit by a bus

Very telling that the bbc led media say it’s “too early to say” when sa doctors are demonstrating weeks of experience and data proving it’s much much milder than delta etc but it’s not “too early” to sneakily suggest a death from Covid

I’ve never been against most restrictions (although the exercise ones were completely stupid and ignored every single day by me) but cork is largely right. There is an element of we will do it because we can do it.

If you ran a business on the precautionary principle and extreme worst case scenarios coming true, it would go bust in a fortnight.

The price of freedom is we live with doubt, risk, uncertainty and even fear.

Not a good look for a so called Conservative Prime Minister with a majority of 78 that he may have to rely on votes from the so called Opposition to get his legislation through tomorrow. He is in effect heading a cobbled together National Government, with Starmer as his deputy.

A number of South African doctors have been very clear that demographics have nothing to do with the mildness of the disease

In fact there is no sign of anyone from sa saying differently

There’s footage online of some crank screaming at fellow passengers on the Tube today for wearing their masks; dribbling on (loudly) that the whole thing’s a conspiracy.

He uses exactly the same terminology as a few contributors to this thread.

I don’t at the moment unfortunately but I’m high-risk so rational calculations have to be made.

It’s basically a question of odds.
