why is it that the better the paper the worse the racing pages?
the worst tabloids…sun, star, mirror all have saturday colour pullouts and for cheltenham plus daily formguides but the more expensive papers such as the mail, telegraph, times have none of this.

I think it’s a case of the more EXPENSIVE the paper, the worse the racing coverage, and it’s why I seldom buy the Times, Telegraph, etc. these days. It is all very well when free papers like the London Evening Standard or very cheap papers like the 20p ‘i’ have limited coverage but I resent paying £1 – or the ludicrous prices of the weekend editions – for papers that think it’s O.K. to offer ‘selected races’.

Why bother with the dailies at all?

You want racing coverage theres only one paper to buy "The Racing Post"

Isn’t the Guardian’s racing coverage the benchmark?

Why is it not acceptable to only publish selected cards?

Racing can consider itself very fortunate to get the column inches it does.

There is no divine right for the sport to have every card printed in the papers.

A lot of the "betting shop fodder" meetings don’t deserve any coverage.

Hear hear. A lot of the betting shop fodder shouldn’t take place anyway

Yes I may be neing a bit harsh, but after seeing there was a £3,100 to the winner 2 horse race at Lingfield today, I say what a waste of money.

If you don’t like low grade racing, don’t watch it.

How about the newspapers just print the Premier League football fixtures too?

Anyway, the cheaper papers have better sports coverage in general.
Sport appeals to the lowest common denominator as do the red top newspapers.

Isn’t the Guardian’s racing coverage the benchmark?

Well … you might use it for covering benches.

Their trio of Greg Wood, Chris Cook and Will Hayler makes a very strong team, imo.

Also, the comment by anthonycutt about red-tops having better sports coverage seems pretty wide of the mark.

I take the Times, and today I could read articles by Alan Lee, Matthew Syed and Mike Atherton. What red-top could compare with that line-up?

Sorry you feel that way, Pinza. Cook, Wood and Hayler do a very good job in my opinion – certainly more thought provoking than the Duvals, McKenzies and Weavers of this world churn out.

I don’t really, Smithy. I can never resist a quip though. My feelings about Greg Wood’s journalism are sufficiently well known here, but I’m much more positive about his two colleagues as commentators on politics within the sport – even if they’ve said little to set the world on fire or provoke significant debate.

The racing coverage in the Irish Examiner (available online at http://www.examiner.ie) is excellent. Pat Keane is the best racing journalist this side of the Irish Sea and Ruby Walsh’s column is required reading for anyone betting on the big races in the UK and Ireland on a weekend.

The Irish Indo on a Saturday has very good racing coverage. Usually runs to 10-11 broadsheet pages.
