Will be visiting relatives in Preston from Australia at the time of the Cambridgeshire and Arc meetings. Have a few questions I need to sort out so that I can get to these meetings.
Best way to get to France from Newmarket saturday night or sunday morning? I will not have the use of a hire car I would only get lost.
Places to stay around Newmarket, Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds that are not going to break the bank that will give me easy travel to Newmarket using public transport.
July 20, 2009 at 10:48 #240181Not sure about staying in the Newmarket area but getting to Paris you can fly from Luton – Paris with an outbound flight 07:55 Sunday morning and returning 22:15. Then a metro from the airport into Paris for the racing.
These are the flights I get and you will find they are about 75% racegoers, currently available for around £63 return.
July 20, 2009 at 12:33 #240191I would take the train from Cambridge to Kings Cross, and the Eurostar from St Pancreas to Paris. Your total time from Camridge to centre of Paris should be just a little over 3 hours (factoring in getting to St Pancreas 30 mins before departure).
July 20, 2009 at 23:27 #240269Try googling for hotels and guest houses in Newmarket, Suffolk.
The most expensive hotels are the Bedford Lodge, Heath Court and Rutland Arms.
After this you’ve got Garrards, Cadogan and then the hotels which are also pubs/bars like White Hart etc.
Outside of Newmarket you’ve got Exning near by. Further afield you’ve got Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds but they would be 15/20 minutes away.
If I was going to Paris for the Arc I’d go on the Eurostar from London (having caught the train to London from either Newmarket – there may be suitable trains on a raceday – or from Cambridge having caught a taxi).
You would probably need to book the Eurostar in advance though and it isn’t cheap.
