Completely bizarre set of events and, as far as I know, unprecedented.

There will no doubt be some difficult questions for the racecourse to answer but can I just ask posters to concentrate on the known facts in what is a very emotive subject matter.

Quite right, the fact is the reason for death was unknown, the other fact is they let horses races without knowing what killed those two poor horses.

Terrible decisions considering the doubt surrounding what happened.

According to channel 4, horses from the first race were coming back with burn marks near their mouths from the bit. You cant tell me that all the horses were checked before the start. This is very worrying!

A very emotional topic which everyone has a differant opinion.

Aye, although the Stipe and Cornelius L are both saying vets checked horses at the start. If they did have burns then surely they should have been noticed?

I think what has been overlooked in discussions so far is the public safety risk which I think must have been pretty severe.

    Newbury officials looking understandably shell-shocked.

By running the first race, according to their own Terms & Conditions they only have to refund 50% of the admission price. Was the decision to race, which can only be described as foolhardy in the extreme, anything to do with this?

It will be interesting to see whether they will change their policy on this occassion and offer racegoes a full refund.

I can understand that everyone is very emotional at the moment but I think we should lay off criticism off Newbury for running the first.

Any sort of incident like that & the first thing you get is confusion. I’d suggest that by the time anyone could get their heads round what happened, the first race had already been run.

I’m sure there will be suggestions that they only ran the first so they only had to pay a 50% refund & there might be some truth in that but I personally don’t think that’s the case.

Unfortunately, i’m not surprised that racing has again shot itself in the foot. A ridiculous decision to continue with racing after the paddock incident.
No way to tell if the public were at risk so racing should have been abandoned, then rearranging of the major races.

I love this sport but it’s run as badly as football. The difference being that football is rich with money.

I suspect what they checked was the horses heartrates, and perhaps any blood from nostrils etc. If they were very small marks, perhaps inside the mouth, they wouldn’t necessarily be noticed especially if the horse wasn’t one that reacted in the paddock and the jockey didn’t notice anything on the way down.

I’ve always know horse racing was incredibly badly run but never knew it was this cruel.

    Well done Newbury racecourse.

well done newbury, are you having a laugh, this should never have happened, its a disgrace that a paddock has been left in that condition and not checked, there is absolutely no excuse and 2 horses have lost their lives, it could easily have been a lot worse.

I’ll stay away from the emotive side of the subject matter and say that Newbury were 100% right to abandon the card. Any risk is too much risk. The nearest I can compare to this infrastructure fail is the drainage collapse at Donny all those years ago. Horrible thing for families on a day out to see.

Ok one question so please, why did they run the first race?

Surely welfare comes first, but not alone this the racecourse should become a crime scene straight away as nobody know what happened.
