Joncol – I thought you’d agreed that you had made your point? Is there any point in you repeating the same things over and over again.
February 12, 2011 at 14:53 #340126More bad news at Warwick where Kilmurry looks to have broken down badly. More bad luck for the Tizzard yard.
February 12, 2011 at 14:55 #340128Should Channel 4 have shown recordings of the horses being electrocuted?
February 12, 2011 at 14:55 #340129When I asked last week if this season could get any more depressing little did I know. What an awful day. Tragic for all concerned. Lets not start blaming anyone until we know the facts though.
"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"
February 12, 2011 at 14:56 #340130Ok one question so please, why did they run the first race?
Surely welfare comes first, but not alone this the racecourse should become a crime scene straight away as nobody know what happened.
Eh?
Your knowledge of police procedures may beat mine, but if no-one knows what happened just yet, how can it be considered a crime?
I wish you well in your racing-free future Joncol. But I’ll make a prediction. Racing is your drug, this forum is your crack and your lips are welded to the pipe… (thanks Danny Baker)

I think they’re right to show the incident especially to accompany Francombe speculating on what happened.
A word on that, I’m pretty sure they would have had a camera trained on the parade ring for close up shots of the runners. Perhaps they’ve elected to use a longer shot to avoid it looking too horrific.
February 12, 2011 at 15:05 #340132I don’t think Channel 4 showed anything they shouldn’t have done. In this day and age pictures/video will come out in one form or another.
Poor Kilmurry, I love the sport, just a dreadfully sad day.And Joncol I think the majority agree in hindsight it was wrong to run the first, but as others have said, you’ve more than laboured the point now. You could see in the interviews how shaken the Newbury Management are by the whole thing, I was annoyed they ran that race at first, still am a bit, but we have such a blame culture, I think we just need to accept it’s a horrible and unfortunate event and we’ll just have to wait and see what investigations subsequently show.

Lets face it, what the C4 viewer saw was no different to any horse being spooked in the paddock. It is only the pre-context that makes it seem more horrific to see. They didn’t show the horses go down, which is a good thing.
February 12, 2011 at 15:31 #340135Newbury holding enquiry at 3.30pm apparently.
Also looking to try and re-stage racing later in the week if cause of issues can be isolated and rectified.

February 12, 2011 at 15:33 #340137More bad news as Money Trix looks to have broken down badly in Ireland.

Excuse me but only a year ago Michael Stoute received death threaths regarding a horse due to run at Ascot. He was told that if the horse lined up that that it would be stabbed. Far fetched yes but that was the reality of what happened so when two horses die like this then imo the area should become a crime scene immediately.
I just horse horse racing receives bad press for running the first rather than good press for cancelling the rest.
Horse welfare was definitely in the back of officials minds today and money was at the front.
February 12, 2011 at 15:46 #340143Joncol – you have absolutely NO evidence to support your comment about money being at the forefront of Newbury officials minds.
The rights and wrongs of the running of the first race will come out in time when the course issues explanations around why that decision was made (presumably stewards were involved). Until that point making assertions like the one made in your post above are just ridiculous.
You have NO IDEA why the decision was made and what the thinking behind it was.
February 12, 2011 at 15:47 #340144Desperate day continues with (unconfirmed) news that there is a problem with Glencove Marina.
February 12, 2011 at 15:48 #340145When one horse appears to spook at something it can set off a chain reaction with the the other horses. Given that what happened today was totally unprecedented, it’s easy to be wise after the event. It’s been a dreadful day; my heart goes out those who have lost horses today, and I’m praying that Money Trix is ok. Joncol; we’re all hurting today.
February 12, 2011 at 15:50 #340146Most of the people running these courses looking like they have no place in the real world and spend too much time pouring one last drop from the bottle.
Much if this sport still in the dark ages
February 12, 2011 at 15:52 #340148It’s been a terrible day, and I would rather that Newbury is closed off while it can be made ultra safe than them even think of re-scheduling.
Newbury did the right thing, ultimately.

So don't run, just like the others always do
