2,000 Conservative Party members have signed a petition demanding the reinstatement of Johnson be on the ballot paper alongside Truss and Sunak – this is what we are dealing with here.

Sutch magnanimity
Sir -As the longest serving party leader in Britain I am sorry to see off my fourth Tory leader since I began in politics in 1963.
Although the Monster Raving Looney party was fundamentally opposed to Mrs Thatcher and what she stood for, she did at least share our objective of bringing some colour into politics. However, her departure proves only one thing – Thatcherism may come and go but Loonyism, which we believe represents the true spirit of the British people, will go on forever.
Screaming Lord Sutch London W8.July 20, 2022 at 17:32 #1607907I was never a fan – like the same tired old joke year after year.
I thought Vincent Hanna in Blackadder III did a good take down of them at the Little Dunny On The Wold By-Election: “The Standing at the Back Dressed Stupidly and Looking Stupid Party.”

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 20, 2022 at 17:43 #1607908They actually had policies that included lowering the voting age, abolishing dog licences, introducing pet passports and several others that did eventually happen. Jeez: people wanting Johnson being added to the leadership vote has echoes of Trump ( yet again).
July 20, 2022 at 17:55 #1607910If Johnson’s name ended up on that ballot paper London will continue to burn …

July 20, 2022 at 18:20 #1607919I thought Vincent Hanna was absolutely brilliant there and, at 57, he died far too young.

July 20, 2022 at 18:30 #1607922I used to enjoy watching “A Week in Politics” on Channel 4, which he presented along with Andrew Rawnsley. It was a sad loss when he died.
July 20, 2022 at 19:11 #1607924I fail to understand the rationale behind sending the tory membership their ballot papers in the near future if Sunak and Truss are going to be campaigning over the next interminable six weeks or so until September. Surely a significant percentage will return their vote shortly after receipt
Wouldn’t it have made more sense to delay sending the papers as late as practically possible, giving the membership time to absorb the guff spouted during what I’m sure will be a riveting campaign
Silly Season just got sillier
July 20, 2022 at 19:15 #1607925Conservative party members are markedly less diverse than the UK population.
97% of the party’s members are white compared to 86% of the UK population.
But that’s not all that different from the other main UK parties, whose members are all over 95% white.
Tory party members are also older than the average member of other parties – most are above 55, and nearly 40% are above 66 years of age.
Seven in ten are men, compared to the overall population, which is 51% female and 49% male.

It’s not perfect but mps are closer to the candidates and do in theory represent all their constituents. If that’s good enough for the early rounds then it should be good enough for the final
July 20, 2022 at 20:13 #1607933It’s now 1.73 Truss, 2.38 Sunak.
There is a BBC1 debate at 9pm next Monday and one on Sky News on 4th August at 8pm.
It’s a bit of a myth the candidates have all summer to win over members on the hustings.
While the result won’t be released until 5th September, postal ballot papers go out on 1st August (11 days from now) and must be returned by 2nd September.
A lot of members are expected to vote early.

It sounds like they can change their minds. From the Conservative Party’s website:
“It is your choice which method of voting you choose. You can only vote once and should a duplicate vote be received by our ballot company, only the last received vote will count.”
Unless I have misunderstood, if someone voted for Truss but then changed their mind, they could submit a vote for Sunak which would be counted, while their initial vote for Truss would be ignored.
