In last Sunday’s Observer, ‘Tattenham Corner’:

‘Meanwhile there was a shock for the Beeb when an interview with one of the weighing room’s less communicative top jockeys, Ryan Moore, began on Thursday. Asked an innocent question, the former champion muttered an expletive to his interviewer and walked off. He had also been spotted mouthing ‘this is bollocks’ on Tuesday when appearing in a pre-racing parade of riders before the opening of the Royal meeting.’

Jogs memories of the gathering of champion jockeys at Ascot for, I think, the Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust, where Moore made his antipathy for proceedings abundantly clear.

    Grow up soft lad.

There was perverse delight in the press room when Ryan Moore won his second Ascot race – all looking forward to "part two" of the encounter.

He is a miserable git though and he needs to learn that communication is part of his role.

In the post race press conference after his second win even Sir Michael Stoute had a quip at Moore’s expense saying "I think there was a flicker of a smile after that win – I hope someone has managed to record it for posterity."

OK we can accept that not all jockeys are going to be as exuberant at Frankie – indeed it would be exhausting if they were. However virtually every other winning jockey was able to spend some time to chat to the press – even if they had rides in the next race and were in a rush.

I like Ryan Moore. I know he winds up the press, but I find his one word answers quite entertaining.

Obviously it wouldn’t be much good if everyone behaved in the same way, but they don’t do they?

I like Moore as a jockey. Great talent.

But… the lad needs a personality makeover. Maybe it’s his age ? Nah, on second thoughts, William Buick doesn’t act as if he’s lost a tenner and found a pound. He, in contarst to young Moore, is a personable and likeable young man.

Come on Ryan, lighten up ! Things aint that bad, surely.

Fair point – but as a punter are you not interested in the opinion of a "Great jockey" (your quote) regarding the horses he has ridden or is going to ride?

How about if the press didn’t bother getting any quotes from jockeys?

I personally have no great issue if a jockey doesn’t want to speak to the press, however it is possible to decline without being offensive and abusive. As I was taught from a very early age – civility costs nothing.

I agree, but some people are shy others are not, people must understand that.

on the subject of jockeys smiling/not smiling I’m fascinated by the way that Jamie Spencer only smiles/talks with one side of his face/mouth; reminds me of a character in a Tin Tin cartoon.

Quite. Thank goodness Young Mr Moore has the honesty not to utter any more verbal bilge-water than he absolutely has to. Who needs this predictable two-sided gush that lathers the microphones every time anybody rides the winner of a Donkey Selling Plate? It is tedious tittle-tattle beyond belief. We could be watching the horses in the paddock for the next instead, for goodness sake.

The important things will have been communicated to owner and trainer: anything else will be so much needless candy floss. The irony is, that Ryan’s sullen coyness makes him an object of even greater fascination to the plastic Bloodhounds of the Press. He’s a great jockey who can hold his own counsel, and this will carry him far: good luck to him!

I’m with Hawk Wing and Pinza. Not saying/smiling much never did Lester Piggott any harm, did it?

Moore’s view of that Ascot "parade" was clearly spot on, too. And pithily expressed.

To many, comprising people within racing, the media, race sponsors and followers of the sport, this aspect of Ryan’s personality will be unacceptable.

In his chosen career, the term professional implies the ability to carry out not only the core competency, i.e., race-riding, to a high standard but all the associated peripheral tasks as well. By all means snarl about the stupid questions and the silly hoops that you’re asked to jump through but do it out of earshot and once the cameras have stopped rolling.

From snubbed journalist to News of the World headline is not a quantum leap – as many sports and sportsmen / women will testify.

This really makes my blood boil.

Horseracing is an entertainment business and everybody employed by that business particularly trainers and jockeys need to remember who is ultimately paying there wages. It is the public.

If particular trainers and jockeys don’t want to talk to the press then perhaps part of the prize money they win which is provided by the public e.g. the levy, should be withheld.

Hold on a minute thats all of the prize money!!

If my memory isn’t letting me down (again), I thought jockeys were paid for television interviews!
