seriously thinking of backing it for the king george as the horse as shown excellent form on right handed tracks, but at 33/1 i think i’m missing something. as the horse met with a setback or has nicholls said its not his targert???? anybody on trf any wiser ?
October 12, 2008 at 15:42 #184421He’s off to the Lexus according to Nicholls – replaces Denman in it as he won’t be ready till February.
October 12, 2008 at 18:53 #184435Think if you want to back Neptunes Collonges for anything the Gold Cup may be a better bet.
Denman may never be as good, not convinced Kauto Star truly stays the trip. The novice staying novice chasers last term don’t look great.

Whilst I agree the novice stayers from last term don’t look the greatest, I disagree about Kauto not truly staying the Gold Cup trip.
He looked in trouble turning for home in 2007, but outstayed the opposition in the straight.
They didn’t go quick that day, but I believe a horse’s stamina limitations will be exposed regardless of pace.
One Man is a prime example. They could have crawled in ’96 and ’97, but he still wouldn’t have stayed.
You don’t win a Gold Cup if you don’t stay the trip.
Neptunes Collanges will be hard to keep out of the frame again next year, but 8/1 doesn’t appeal with five months to the big day.
If he returns to his best after a frustrating end to last season, Exotic Dancer looks a monster bet at 33’s. He ran a fine race in the Gold Cup considering the problems he encountered during the build up to the race.
Albertas Run looks short of top class. Big Buck’s will need to jump better. Air Force One doesn’t seem to enjoy Cheltenham and Tidal Bay will be kept to 2 / 2 1/2 miles.
Even at this early stage, I can’t see beyond Denman, Kauto Star, Neptunes Collanges, Exotic Dancer and perhaps War Of Attrition if he returns to his very best.

As an out-and-out stayer, the sharp 3m of the King George would be the last race on my mind for Neptune Collonges, if he were mine.
His 33/1 price tag possibly reinforces that view?October 12, 2008 at 19:43 #184444I agree that you can’t win a Gold Cup unless you truly stay, but Kauto didn’t ‘outstay’ anything in 2007. He had the better turn of foot off a slow pace.
Beef Or Salmon leading for so long and at least 9 horses being in contention when they turned for home are evidence of this.

When you look back at the race, the others kicked for home and Kauto was actaully in trouble coming round the final bend.
I wouldn’t expect this from a horse with an abundance of speed, coming off a slow pace.
Perhaps the term ‘outstayed’ is incorrect, but he certainly displayed his staying credentials that day.
Wasn’t Kauto also entered for the Bet365 (Whitbread) last season? That wouldn’t pose a problem for him, either, in my opinion.

October 12, 2008 at 20:09 #184453Hmmm I’ve just had another look at the closing stages of the race and I still can’t see that he was in trouble. He looked on the bridle as the sprint began.
He pulled wide off the home turn still travelling well, stole a few lengths on the field as soon as Ruby started to get animated and left them for dead.

You were watching a different race to me, Bosranic. Kauto Star hacked all the way round, and put the race to bed in a matter of strides turning in.

As far as I’m aware, Neptune Collonges will not run this side of Christmas. He is a part of the re-think after Denmans set back. He will be targeted at the Lexus, as Irish Stamp says, and then on to the Gold Cup. But his main aim this season is as the last two seasons, The Irish Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup. Nothing is ever written in stone in this game…and this is already plan "B" but all being well that’s the campaign.
October 13, 2008 at 00:33 #184513If Kauto Star shows anything like his old form pre Xmas he will be odds on for the King George. Neptune isn’t even quoted for the King George with leading bookmakers so I take it the guys are right he will head for the Lexus.
Anyone who takes his form with Kauto Star in the Gold Cup seriously should pack in racing now IMO.
How many times have we seen horses like him run a big race like that then the form being ridiculed later? Monet Garden being a classic example.
Neptune is a good horse but he is no Kauto Star and never will be IMO.
October 13, 2008 at 02:37 #184539Neptune is a very good horse but not in either kauto’s or Denman’s league if anything Exotic Dancer will take that 3rd spot if back to form…
October 13, 2008 at 02:41 #184540sorry thought it was gold cup and not king george, still would not back him for that either not at price quoted anyway….
October 13, 2008 at 02:46 #184542We don’t know yet if Kauto Star is going to be/will be better than ever….I certainly hope he is, but Neptune Collonges may have improved over the summer..he seems to have been around for a long time but he is still a youngster.

If Neptune Collonges improves another 5-7lb then he will be the nearest thing following a fully fit Denman in next years Gold Cup. Exotic Dancer will still be jumping the last.

Agree almost totally, though in the unlikely event of ED returning to his best form he’ll be a lot closer than that.
