I haven’t looked at fractions or sectionals or seen any quotes or indeed examined at any of the things that might better inform me, and I’ve only watched it once…but, just to the eye, that ride by Ryan Moore in the Cox Plate looked out of the very, very top drawer.
Best jockey in the world?
(Trainer not shabby either)
October 25, 2014 at 08:22 #493339Yes, best jockey in the world. Whenever he rides for O’Brien you know you’ve got a way better chance of collecting than when Joseph rides. Moore is levels above.
October 25, 2014 at 09:04 #493346Superb. That horse was probably a good 5 lengths better than the others mind.

October 25, 2014 at 10:23 #493374Exceptional, especially from such a poor draw. I could imagine plenty of jockeys getting beat on the horse, does anyone think Joseph could have won on him even if he could do the weight?
Surprised Coolmore don’t break the bank to sign him up, could be worth millions to them.
October 25, 2014 at 10:42 #493378I think Ryan Moore is top drawer and did well today. However, had Joseph given the horse the same ride today would people have said what an outstanding ride ? They probably would have said ‘the horse won despite the jockey. Sat too far back and went too wide’ And, if it had finished 1/2 length back he would have been panned.
October 25, 2014 at 10:42 #493380October 25, 2014 at 13:35 #493410There is no such thing as a bad ride if you win.The only bad rides are when you lose.Had Joe won at Leopardstown and Moore lost at Moonee Valley the dictum would apply.

October 25, 2014 at 20:05 #493463I reckon questions would have been asked if Adelaide had gone down by a neck after finishing like that.
It’s always hard to gauge the ratio of luck and good judgement in these things. Ryan Moore might have felt he was always going to get there but if another horse had had another little coaxed out of him by the jockey the result may have been different.
A good display from the winner and the jockey is my favourite currently riding, but I’d ease off with the master class plaudits because a jockey can only make the move if he has the horse under him to do it with.
Had Joseph come from the same position at the same time and gone down a short head, he would have been on the next cross along from Jesus in the aftermath.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
October 25, 2014 at 20:55 #493474Hold everything.It’s only a horse race.Both are still riding a waved of popularity.
October 25, 2014 at 21:26 #493480Not true entirely.A lot was learned about the horse that day.
October 25, 2014 at 22:34 #493484Masterclass my ars#….Moore did as good a job as he could from a wide gate, he couldn’t do much else. Moore himself said the horse had a tough run.5 lengths better my ars# as well, getting carried away there. Moore is a very good rider when he is on but prior to yesterday had only had 2 rides in Australia 2012 and 2013 Melb Cup Mount Athos and Dandino absolutely slaughtered both. Adelaide should have easily won in France last start but Moore got caught up on the fence in a 7 horse race. He makes too many mistakes to be called the worlds best rider. If Foreteller or Sweynesse had the luck they would have probably nabbed him on the line after his tough run, but history will show they didn’t. I think Moore is a very good rider but misjudges more than his fair share. His first ride yesterday was on Bull Point in the Group 2 mile, sat back last until they turned for home ( 173 mt straight)flew for 2nd should have won.

Spot on if it was Joseph O’Brien and he got beaten doing that it would be the usual calling for his head. JOB is actually a very good rider.
October 26, 2014 at 13:40 #493533Jollyp makes an interesting point.
Ryan had three rides yesterday – races 4, 5 and 6 on the HKJC simulcast videos here:
http://racing.hkjc.com/racing/overseas/ … 41025/S1/4
Race 4, he went to the back on exiting and fast-finished second.
Race 5, he went to the front on exiting and faded to sixth.
Race 6, he went to the back on exiting and fast-finished first.
would Race 4 have been spoken of similarly to Race 6 had he won ?
i feel sorry for Ryan in these debates. he never blows his own trumpet yet still ends up in the middle of unsolicited claims made for him by well-wishers.
October 27, 2014 at 05:21 #493564JollyP If only he would. If only he could.
October 27, 2014 at 07:14 #493568Dear old Jolly P. I love it when you pop up from down under with your 2 cents worth!
You are probably right – 5 lengths is not right. More like 10! He circled the whole field!
I backed him purely on the strength that, over these distances at least, there is a massive gulf in quality between European and Aussie horses, similarly in the US. To be able to send Side Glance over to finish a close up 4th tells you all you need to know. I hope for your sake Jolly we don’t start sending some of our good ones over!

Learn about reading a race Joni…You see he was back at the tail not spending much, Moore did the right thing in going forward to improve then grab hold with cover. He then went around them from about the 700mt or thereabouts.Um Moonee Valley has a lovely camber it really suits horses winding up out wide. Makybe Diva went around the lot of them to win the Cox Plate. You forget So You Think won the Cox Plate twice easily and he fared pretty well over there…This Cox Plate was the weakest in many years. You have sent your best horse over Einstein his name is Adelaide!!!. Now watch the Caulfield Cup the Japanese horse had much the same sort of run in that he had to circle the whole field along with the aussie mare Lucia Valentina and the Japanese have better stayers than you will ever have!!! That doesn’t make them 5 lengths better. My 2 cents worth will always be better than your £1000 worth of naïve ,no hands on horse experience
(Tick Tick Tick(sound of waiting for an inevitable Jonibake name calling one eyed childish reply…)
