Montdragon reported as lost in the Conditional Hurdle.
That’s seven at the meeting, fuel for the antis. Extremely sad for owners, trainers and especially the stable staff.March 18, 2016 at 18:30 #1238795I struggled to watch the races today. A terribly sad week.
March 18, 2016 at 18:33 #1238800Desperately more sad news …
March 18, 2016 at 20:40 #1238824It started badly with Long Dog going wrong, then the awful fall by Wayne Hutchison and now the news that this poor boy has been fatally injured..devastated.
I couldn’t watch as Cue Card made his challenge in the Gold Cup and looked as though he just had to jump it to go on and win, then the sickening fall as he took a false step before the jump…I thought he wouldn’t get up sound but thank God he did, that little fella had someone looking after him today.
RIP Montdragon and all the horses taken from us this week, the shine was taken from the Festival this year with the loss of so many horses. :(Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 18, 2016 at 20:54 #1238827Apparently Montdragon collapsed in front of the stands after pulling up after the last (second last usually but the last was dolled off) … he never got into the race so it sounds like something was wrong …
March 18, 2016 at 21:11 #1238833Awful. There were a few who ran very poorly (Modus comes to mind, having backed him). Makes you wonder why they don’t pull them up when there is clearly something amiss and they have no chance anyway. I’m just glad I decided not to go this year.
March 19, 2016 at 07:56 #1238935I’ve been holding it in all week but this morning it really hit me seeing this beautiful picture of Montdragon and thinking of all the others lost this week.
I’m trying hard to focus on the positives like Sprinter, Annie, Vautour, Douvan, Don Cossack and Thistlecrack and the miraculous escape that Cue Card had after he took a wrong step before the jump.
You see the emotion in their handlers faces when they come back safe..win or lose they fight another day.
For all of us that love horses so much it’s been a harrowing 4 days.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 19, 2016 at 08:13 #1238938The bad images are outweighing the good for me, I’m afraid. If Cue Card had been injured I fear I may have walked away from NH racing for good. I can’t quite pinpoint yet why I’m feeling this way because it isn’t just the number of fatalities.
March 19, 2016 at 11:27 #1238976Like Moehat, I have been a lifelong supporter of NH racing, and have always watched Saturday racing and looked forward to Cheltenham week. Nowadays I struggle to watch live racing, and prefer to watch a recorded version – having first checked on here that there were no fatalities in the races I watch. If a particular favourite of mine is running, I would rather check the result before I watch the race, rather than have my heart in my mouth the whole way through. This week has been particularly bad, with so many losses – the wins for Sprinter Sacre and Thistlecrack made up for it in some ways, but I am finding it harder and harder to balance my love for NH horses with the emotional stress of watching them run.
My aim in life is to be the person my dogs think I am!
