Nice to hear from you again Ken and hoping you’re feeling as well as can be expected.Well done with Mon Mome and maybe your Mum was looking over your shoulder.
April 5, 2009 at 16:21 #220467I must say that I was disappointed with the lack of information in running of Rambo, given that he was such a high profile horse. However, in previous years, being a Grand National addict, I’ve been able to pick out most horses myself during the race; this year, even watching the replay I found it very dificult to do so; perhaps the horses were bunched together much.Bye the way, good to have you back, Ken.
April 5, 2009 at 16:47 #220469Mon Mome …… and he did make the "second cut" when I was working through the national card – but as Jeremy says he did not really tick any of the boxes.
I had Mon Mome marked down pretty much the same. He made my ‘long-list’ of 11, which included the 1st, 3rd and 4th, but when I whittled that down his below par recent form saw him dropped. In retrospect he was value at the price, but then hindsight is such a marvellous thing!
My shortlist eventually produced 3rd, 12th, 13th and a couple of pulled ups. My ‘avoid the fallers’ factor did at least find five to stay on their feet. Idle Talk gave brief hope of a big ‘un until running out of puff at the Melling Road.

April 6, 2009 at 02:39 #220588Ive got a 7 month old son (called Matthew), and decided to put a little fun bet on for him. I was looking through the names of the horses on Sat morning for something which stood out (ie, anything with something like Matt/Baby/Son etc in the name) – couldnt find anything so just held the paper in front of him and backed the horse nearest to where he made a grab for it (turned out to be Priests Leap at 66/1).
Therefore, imagine my disgust when Claire Balding said after the race that Mon Mome means ‘my kid’!!!
She could have mentioned it earlier!!
April 6, 2009 at 09:58 #220593If I was a betting woman….which I’m not, I would have had each way on Mon Mome
He’s one of those horses I have a soft spot for, and look out for if ever he’s running. I didn’t think he had much chance but I’d have had a couple of quid on for sentimentality’s sake. I was absolutely thrilled he won, dancing round me lounge I was.
Fabulous.April 6, 2009 at 10:56 #220595My mate is a Taxi driver in West Lothian-Whitburn.
He was approached by 3 guys in Kilts who were just back from Aintree on Sunday morning wanting a hire & he took them to William Hills in Whitburn-Who couldnt pay them out as they had bet the winner.
They then asked him to run them to Armadale-another W.Hill shop & they came out with rolls of notes in their sporrans. They gave him a £20 tip & told him they had cleaned up EACH WAY on Mon Mome. The guy who told them about it had £250 Each Way on it
Someone knew something.April 6, 2009 at 14:53 #220611My greengrocer is giving away his entire stock of vegetables this morning. They’re queuing round the block to get a bagful of fresh, pesticide free, locally grown fruit and veg. Not wanting to miss the opportunity for some healthy eats, I took my bag down and was rewarded with a roomy bag of Lincolnshire Maris Pipers, a pineapple, some Turk’s Turban squashes and a bag of kurly kale. Not known for his generosity or his disposition, I asked the grocer the reason for his largesse.
"Won the National mate. Some geezer in a trilby came in on Friday last week and gave me the nod. Had £300 e/w. I’m out this caper, pal. Off to Barbados. Here, have some nice parsnips."
April 6, 2009 at 15:30 #220614Infact, the whole of Hereford was on, we all knew, it was the cities local secret. Venettia her self had been screaming from the top of the shire hall, ‘but keep it secret’ she mused ‘outsiders need not know’. Fortunately the average earnings being well below minimum wage our pultry sums of money could not effect the market.
Barry Island here i come.
April 6, 2009 at 19:38 #220636Hey GC, he was an obvious pick for some who use the double letter factor a la Red Rum, Party Politics

Ach, yes, that was one small box ticked, wasn’t it!
Meh.

April 6, 2009 at 19:39 #220637Nor does he have a person’s name
A good friend of mine is a once a year punter. His name’s Mark, and he always backed Kingsmark when it ran in the National. His six year old daughter just happens to be Monica – and you can guess what they call her for short! He mentioned to me in the week about Mon Mome – I did phone him up last night but got no answer – maybe he’s heading for palm tree paradise as we speak!!
All right, all right, but apart from better sanitation and medicine and education and irrigation and public health and roads and a freshwater system and baths and public order… etc. etc.
