Biggles is the obvious one for me here, having earmarked him earlier in the season as very definitely one to follow. Already bet him for The Bunbury Cup, and really hoping he takes that in, so definitely a wait and see job with him.
Awaal ran very well at Ascot, and at around 12’s, I think that’s a fair price.
If Biggles doesn’t run next week, another I’m looking at for Newmarket is Star of Orion. Regularly held in these big handicaps, but puts in decent runs now and then. Running ok this year, and slipping down the weights nicely. That double entry stops me having an Antepost, but he makes some appeal here at 25’s.

Star of OrionJuly 10, 2023 at 14:47 #1654945Bless Him @ 25/1
I have about 8 horses to follow and 4 are entered for this, unbelievable.
Ran in this last year after winning the Bunbury Cup and was just beaten a short head by Fresh and now 3 lb better off.Nothing between them really apart from the price.
A similar route as last year by the look of things and in an ideal world a short head second to Biggles at Newmarket would be champion.
July 12, 2023 at 13:03 #1655099I’m kind of stuck having a bet because the horse I’ve been waiting for,
Northern Express, is entered in this and the William Hill Epic H’cap
on Friday. He’s 3/1 for Friday’s race and 16/1 for this. Problem is
he’s no.26 in the International and I’m sure Michael Dodds would rather
go for this than Friday’s race.I’m going to hold off until tomorrow and see who’s still standing in the
International. If he gets in I’d rather have the 16s on the Saturday or as
near that as possible as he’d probably drop a bit. Ascot suits as he ran a
screamer in the Buckingham Palace to be 3rd and I don’t think the 2lb rise
is unreasonable. They have the ground at Ascot down as g/f at the moment,
which would suit but looks like there may be a bit of rain over the weekend.Looks a cracking race
July 24, 2023 at 14:16 #1656346Popmaster likes it here, isn’t badly treated, and has 7f form.
Will be of interest granted a favourable draw.

July 25, 2023 at 10:29 #1656448I’m keen on Northern Express in this, and though I wanted to wait with him, I don’t think that 14-1 will last long, so I’ve bet him already
July 27, 2023 at 12:21 #1656743Fresh is my win bet at 6-1, and I’m adding Popmaster 50-1 ew 7plcs
July 27, 2023 at 12:28 #165674550/1 Popmaster would be gigantic but for the draw – but even then it seems fair to me.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 27, 2023 at 14:28 #1656771FYI the Victoria Cup run at Ascot on soft in May was won by a low drawn horse.
July 27, 2023 at 14:30 #1656774I was aware of that, Mike, but thanks, anyway, I’d rather know something twice than not at all.
I think the Stands’ side will be favoured on Saturday – if the jockeys have the sense to race there – but the herd instinct prevalent among so many of them puts it in the lap of the Gods.

even with the 3lb penalty I think he’s worth a go. Difficult to say where the benefit of
the draw lies, but it tends to be one side or the other, and perhaps a slight advantage
drawn high. Stall 20 should be ideal.Northern Express 15.5 & 15

July 28, 2023 at 01:47 #1656829Happy with 6’s on Biggles, and bigger than I expected.
No sign of that 50’s on offer from midweek for Escobar, but 25’s is fair. He should win a race this year, and I give him a decent chance here.
Still like Star of Orion, but can’t have three in this (I do think he’s too big), while having bet Ropey Guest regularly at crazy odds the last few years, I can handle it if he wins at current odds.
Two’s enough
Biggles 6’s
Escobar 25’sJuly 28, 2023 at 20:54 #1656891Biggles has to be backed after his Bunbury Cup exhibition performance. And Dettori is an intriguing booking for VTC’s other selection Escobar. I expect I will back him as well.
I have also backed Baradar. He showed in the Lincoln that he can go well in these big handicaps and the ground will be more suitable for him than it was at the Royal meeting. He is a cliff horse but I have to back him once more!
