With all the criticism of the BBC coverage one thing that hasn’t been mentioned yet has been the switch to three commentators on-course.
I think Richard, Stewart and Mark did an excellent job and the fact there is no thread slagging off of their commentary this year shows what a good job they did.
All the fallers were picked up correctly and all the significant pulled-ups.
So after last years criticism I think time to redress the balance – well done chaps.

I would agree with that and the change from last year was fully vindicated, just one minor blip as far as I could see which I’m sure won’t be repeated was a poor hand over of the baton as they jumped a fence in the Topham which led to the 2 favs in the race that fell at that fence (sods law) being missed.
April 5, 2009 at 15:09 #220459Disappointed that Rambling Minster – my selection – didn’t seem to have a mention until he pulled up well on in the race. As such a well-backed horse I thought a spotter would be watching him …
I can relate to that. I was cheering on Killbeggan Blade in the home straight … not knowing that he’d pulled up some way before. He hardly got a mention
April 5, 2009 at 15:11 #220460From what I can gather Claire Balding was at her ham fisted best again today

She made me laugh when she asked the winning jockey (of the National) to show his teeth. Poor chap!
April 5, 2009 at 16:54 #220470I must admit to having a bit of a thing for Venetia Williams.
Though I was just wondering – is she a ‘Friend of Clare Balding’ ?April 5, 2009 at 18:18 #220480I must say that I just couldnt believe what Clare Balding said to Liam Treadwell yesterday. It was just plain ignorant ridicule (on what was probably the best moment of the bloke’s life), nothing less. In the context of the occasion, I think most people would struggle to come up with something worse to say ad lib.
"Come on, and give us a smile, and show us your teeth."
"At least youve probably won enough to get them sorted now"
WTF? No focus on the fact that the guy barely ever picks up a decent ride (as the nicholls third, fourth or fifth string jock) and picked up a national win on an unfancied 100-1 outsider for another yard.
Lets just capitalise on the occasion as an excuse to mock his physical appearance on national TV.I was sat with a load of people who only ever watch racing once a year or so (unless they call round and Im watching it), and they were in complete disbelief that someone could say something as ignorant as that to the fella. Judging by their response I’d expect Points Of View will get a few complaints.
Personally, I’d like to think, if I’d have been in treadwells position i’d have said something along the lines of: "Well Clarence, I know your a big unit, but if you lost enough weight that you could win the national then perhaps you’d be able to afford to complete your sex change op, and restart your hormone therapy."
Talk about people in glass houses.

I was also amazed by the "teeth" remark.
In an attempt to mitigate, I wonder if they are old mates and it’s a bit of fun. I hope so.Very happy to see a lesser-known jockey win the big ‘un.
As for riding PFN’s outsiders are you thinking of Liam Heard there?April 5, 2009 at 19:30 #220489As for riding PFN’s outsiders are you thinking of Liam Heard there?
Think I am actually PPG…
April 5, 2009 at 19:30 #220490To be fair she may not have focused on that because that is a different Liam (Heard).
April 5, 2009 at 19:32 #220491Actually, that goes some way to explaining why he wasnt on one of Nicholls yesterday…
April 5, 2009 at 19:43 #220493But he does have nice gnashers.
April 5, 2009 at 19:49 #220494This is the same woman who reminded Timmy Murphy of his jail term seconds after he won the race last year. She also asked Aiden O Brien if Kieren Fallon would be riding for Ballydoyle again, right after Johnny Murtagh had won another Group 1 at Ascot last year.
Glad I didn’t sign the tipping rag’s petition.
April 5, 2009 at 20:09 #220500I recorded this year’s National on the BBC as it happened. Yet when I watched the re-run on RUK decided to record their coverage over the BBc’s.
Well done all at RUK.

Value Is EverythingApril 5, 2009 at 22:09 #220523I am not making up the following, it is true:
On radio 5 this morning, Venetia Williams was interviewed by some clown called David Davies (I think), who, after congratulating her on her success, said "of course, you trained Best Mate to win 3 Gold Cups". "No I didn’t", she replied.
If it’s not wendyball or golf, these R5 people just don’t have a clue do they?
April 5, 2009 at 22:33 #220526Agree with poster who said about having a thing for Venetia Williams.
According to the Post she his hitting a milestone age this year but looks much younger than she actually is.
Mind you just be thankful Clare didnt say "So Venetia do you ride the same Bus as me, The number 69 to Pussyville"
She has apologised so i have read which is something good anyway.

Balding apologises for Treadwell teeth comment
By Graham Green6.34PM 5 APR 2009
CLARE BALDING has apologised to Liam Treadwell over the comment she made about his teeth when interviewing the 23-year-old rider following his Grand National triumph on Saturday.
Not least of Treadwell’s impressive accomplishments at Aintree was how, in front of a TV audience of millions, he retained his poise in response to the implied criticism of his appearance, but viewers were quick to object and many posted complaints on internet forums and chatrooms, while others contacted the BBC switchboard to register their protest.
Balding asked Treadwell to bare his teeth to the camera, supposedly to show the perils that a jump jockey faces. When he did so, the presenter blurtedout that he "could afford to have them seen to now".
The BBC would not say how many complaints it received, but Balding was on Sunday taken to task by her bosses over the remark before fronting the Corporation’s coverage of the Rugby League Challenge Cup clash between Leeds and St Helens.
April 5, 2009 at 23:41 #220542I have finally got round to watching the BBC’s coverage of Aintree.
Let’s just say the episode with Liam’s teeth was not one of Ms Baldings better moments!!
Did she apologise before or after her bosses had a word though?
After the success of this years on-course commentary I don’t see why the BBC cannot use the course commentary in future – as well as the Racetech pictures – I want to see the race not arty shots. Or at the very least have proper shots of the race on the red button so viewers have a choice.
