It is very difficult to separate the aesthetically pleasing and the talented. We all remember the good ones.

On the theme of greys, and because I can only remember racehorses who were very good at racing, I would nominate Petite Etoile. She looked a very strong and attractive mare and, of course, had that spotted coat inherited from her ancestor The Tetrarch. It seems that there are now fewer medium/dark greys with white splashes than there used to be. On a TRF note, she therefore traces back to Drone (1823).

A more Hollywood-style good looker was Crocket. A light chestnut with flaxen mane and tail, he was the equine equivalent of Robert Redford. According to the judges (and jockeys) of the day he was one of the best-moving horses they had ever seen. He also had bags of talent. Winning the Coventry Stakes by five lengths, The Gimcrack (led close home yet still won by two lengths) and the Middle Park. He suffered his first defeat in the Guineas where he finished last of 22 runners, then he went on to beat the second in the Guineas, Ionian, by seven and a half lengths in the S James’s Palace at Royal Ascot.

I spoke to a photographer when I went to the Arc a few years ago and she said that the most beautiful horse she’d photographed was a Godolphin horse, a chestnut, and it’s driving me mad that I can’t remember it’s name. I always thought Hardy Eustace was incredibly pretty but no one noticed it because of his blinkers.

I agree with most of those named thus far but Santini is fast becoming one of my favourite horses visually.

    Was it New Approach Moe?
Owned by Princess Haya, and unbelievably now 13 years old, he is the most stunning chestnut of Godolphins that I’ve ever seen apart from his sons Dawn Approach, as mentioned by Nathan above, and Derby winner, Masar.

    ZENYATTA was a princess

It is right that we tend to remember the beautiful AND talented ones. I will try to think of a beautiful but useless one!

Snaafi Dancer ($10.2m) and Jalil ($9.7m) both looked like a million dollars – times ten, at least to Sheik Mohammed’s bloodstock advisors and the underbidders. Neither of them was much good on the racecourse, or at stud.
