Yet again another awful commentary from Mike Cattermole in the first race at York, I’ve no idea why he was booked to do York this week when much more capable commentators were idle.
After the debacle at Newbury and other poor efforts in the past he should stick to presenting.
August 22, 2014 at 13:31 #488903He’s an absolute liability. Cattermole continues to get most of the best gigs despite making so many more errors than practically everyone else on the roster.
August 22, 2014 at 14:47 #488906He just made a mumbled apology before the Nunthorpe, simply not good enough for a major meeting anymore.
August 22, 2014 at 16:20 #488918Channel 4 racing isn’t fit for purpose and there needs to be a clear out and people in who know the industry and can sell it on v.
August 22, 2014 at 17:05 #488920The Catt wasn’t on C4 today, edina. He made his blunder on the course and RUK commentary.
August 22, 2014 at 20:14 #488939I have met him and he seems a very nice chap.
However as pointed out his commentary is average at the best of times and generally poor with mistakes galoreSeptember 12, 2014 at 16:53 #490100I’ve not been impressed by his calling this week at Doncaster, what has happened to Hoiles, Hunt, Johnson etc ?
Called the ‘top weight’ home the winner in the last today when they all had the same weight bar the girls.
I just hope he doesn’t get the big jumping festivals.
September 12, 2014 at 19:06 #490111Now I would not have a clue how to even begin calling a race, and these chaps are very skilled at what they do. However I have to agree that Mike Cattermole has lost a wee bit over the last couple of years and I am surprised he is still getting the festival calls.
On the eight race card at Donny yesterday (Thurs) he shared the calls with Gareth Topham and to be honest the youngster was much the better caller. That lad will go far in that game.

I’ve been very impressed with Gareth Topham, very good and clear commentaries. They should let him call the Leger and Channel 4 should use him if Simon Holt and Richard Hoiles aren’t available
September 13, 2014 at 06:54 #490142Don’t know how Mike continues to get these top festivals to call, he must be quite a popular, affable chap. It can’t be the quality of his commentaries.
Thought Gareth was quite promising when he first came in but seems very cliche ridden, not a good sign for someone only in their 20’s, must have had more horses having their hearts broken when he’s commentating than any other commentator.
The underrated Alan Howes deserves more opportunities at the top table for me and it made a welcome change to see John Hunt presenting from Donny instead of the old guard. The missus was quite impressed with his sharp suit and tie as well.
September 13, 2014 at 09:15 #490160Seems strange that people like Stewart Machin who was a regular Doncaster caller is nowhere as is Mark Johnson who would have done the Ebor meeting too in the past are missing from this week.
I wonder if there has been a shake up with the roster ?
September 13, 2014 at 15:54 #490181Did a Cheltenham preview with him earlier this year, very nice chap, very likable.
October 23, 2014 at 10:01 #493200Last night this idiot called my horse as second in the 8.55 at Kempton when he actually finished 5th.As I am visually impaired I went with what he said and made my way to the winners enclosure. Thankfully en route they announced the first four home so didnt actually enter the enclosure. By the time I found Good Luck Charm the jockey had gone and I missed the post race debrief. Thanks very much Mike. Watching the replay this morning even I can see that the second horses colours are nothing like ours. Grrrrrrrr.
October 23, 2014 at 15:48 #493212I’ve always found Mike Cattermole to be highly competent and good communicator as both a broadcaster and commentator. Commentary is not easy and every so often mistakes are made which is infuriating but doesn’t mean the perpetrator is an idiot. All commentators are regularly monitored and regular under performers are identified and lose their contract, so we have a team who are consistently good, bar the inevitable odd mistake!
October 23, 2014 at 15:49 #493213Not the first time by a long way that Cattermole has done that, the requisite of a commentator is to call the right horses, quips, puns and jokes are not required and surely it’s time that whoever is in charge these days has a word and puts him on notice.
October 24, 2014 at 13:59 #493263Roberto had our colours and never to be’s colours been similar I could forgive him but they arent. It isnt the first time he has done this as Tony quite clearly states and he didnt even correct himself. Not acceptinle when it came to me missing the debrief.
November 14, 2014 at 14:11 #495123Oh dear, Cattermole at it again at Cheltenham today. I would love to know why he is getting all the high profile meetings when he is patently not up to it
