Sorry all I didn’t mean to cause offence. I guess I made an error of judgement posting that on here. I’ve had a shedful of texts today about the subject and thought i’d share one on here. Sorry.

True, it’s a sad day for pop music but let’s get real here.
This is hardly likely to affect any of us on this forum is it.
A tragic loss of a very tallented if not confused man/boy.
And to mention the thread title, OMB.

Still, at least alex ferguson can play Giggs in august!

When anyone famous or in the public eye lose their life in whatver way then people will always make jokes and a lot of them are a bit on the sick side but it is their way of dealing with it and trying to make light of the situation.

It happened with Jade Goody and Princess Diana to name a few and no doubt when many others die then the same will happen, I have had jokes texted to me and i have laughed i admit.

I am not really a Michael Jackson fan as i have no albums of his and no singles at all but i do appreciate the talent to which he had and the huge effort and hard work he put into his songs, videos and concert to make sure that they were the best.

If i had to name a favourite MJ track then i would have to say the full 20-30 minuite version of Thriller which will remain one of the greatest videos ever done by any artist, Just look at the dancing and you will see how much time and effort went in to make sure that all the moves were correct and that all the dancers jumped to the same height, moved the same way at the same time.

R.I.P. MJ, i bet even God himself is doing the Moonwalk.

On a lighter note here is my favourite MJ moment

Paul Gambaccini [sp] was on the telly this morning saying how it was like he was 3 different people; the child star, the amazing talent and the wierdo. Difficult not to make fun of the latter, and let’s not make him a saint just because he’s dead. Shame that he didn’t come to London; it would have been nice to remember him for his talent [and PG reckons that in years to come that is what will be remembered]. Maybe we’ll understand him more now; it’s strange how you only really tend to know what people are like after they’re gone.

My office at work is FULL of Michael Jackson jokes today. Agree with Neil and the forum is just reflecting that. Anything too offensive (in my and other moderators judgement) will be removed.

I liked the Jackson 5 better than MJ or The Jacksons. Got To Be There and I’ll Be There are absolutely fantastic songs with great vocal performances. Thriller was iconic and he was a real star. RIP

I personally don’t make any jokes, but it is inevitable considering all the incidents involving him. In a way at least he has finally found peace, although a pre-mature one at that. I can’t understand all the other stuff and accusations because he obviously had issues and he was the easiest target in the world for those people to sue. The only way for society to learn from a public figures mistakes is to try and understand people a bit more, and make it easier for people with demons to talk to people.

With regards to his music, there were many classics and it’s stating the obvious when saying he was a superb artist and entertainer. Even if you didn’t consider yourself a fan of his, you look at some of the songs and they all add up to you admiring alot of them.

Exactly Corm and ‘toell’ shouldn’t worry imo, I’m sure I mentioned surprise at some thread on here before about someone who had just died and the common thought was that it was just harmeless fun, sometimes it’s difficult to judge which way the wind is blowing on here, welcome to the forum ‘toell’.

Anyway, apparently when the two paramedics arrived at Michael Jackson’s to answer the 911 call, upon finding him the first asks the second what they should try first, to which the second replied, "well I don’t know about you but I reckon the ferris wheel".

I have mixed feelings about this.

It is always sad when someone dies young and lets face it in this day and age 50 is young.

He was a very talented performer, dancer and, what many people forget to mention, songwriter. His influence on modern music, especially black music, cannot be underestimated and he was responsible for the biggest selling album of all time.

He had, by any measure, a very unconventional upbringing and lifestyle. I’m sure any aspiring psychiatrist could write a doctorial thesis on the life of M Jackson.

I do find disturbing all his family and “friends” who are being wheeled out on television shedding tears and saying how sad it is etc. etc.

Yes they may be grief stricken, yet what have these family members, advisors and friends done to try to stop him pressing the self destruct button?

How many of these so called friends were friends just for the kudos?

I’m sorry but if I had a friend who was on the route to self destruction I would do everything in my power to stop them and try to help them.

What were his, so called, advisors doing?

How many are now going to cash in on his death?

I think a large number of his family, friends and advisors need to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask what they could have done to prevent him taking the path he ended up taking.

Regarding the jokes circulating, I have mixed feelings. I must confess I have received a couple of dozen texts today and some (mainly the ones about his appearance) I admit I laughed at.

Although I do have serious doubts about those also referring to child abuse – which a) is not a subject to be joking about and b) we need to remember he was never convicted.

Sending them privately is questionable, posting on a public forum is bound to attract strong criticism.

Finally does it really merit the blanket coverage it is receiving on the news channels. I bet the Government spin doctors are rubbing their hands with glee – I wonder how many bits of “bad news” will be slipped out today?

It’s a shame though not a surprise. It’s made me a bit sad this news.

No surprise at all considering he’d been suffering from Lupus for twenty-odd years; a nasty affliction, one symptom of which is heart problems.

Can’t say his music was my sort of thing, infact it was only his take on

    Rockin’ Robin

when still a boy in the early ’70s that I enjoyed, but he was undoubtedly a polished stage performer throughout his career.

A tinge of sadness here too, as tends to be the case when someone you more-or-less grew up with shuffles off prematurely.

What has suprised me today is how shocked I was to hear that he was 50 [not old by my standards, but pretty long in the teeth by others]. I realised that I still seemed to look on him as some sort of Peter Pan figure, and perhaps the people around him did also. When someone is on such a destructive path with their life, all real friends can do is ‘be there’…..advice isn’t going to make any difference.

I know it doesn’t do forums or rentagob social networking sites any good but a dignified or respectful silence or putting yourself in someone else’s place always seems like a good reaction to most events particularly sad or personal ones.

Finding something to say about any or everything seldom produces good outcomes IMO.

Even If you do or particularly if you don’t care about Michael Jackson there is probably not a lot that is of value to be said at a time like this, but if you were in his or his family’s place I think you’d know instinctively what you would like to be hearing or just as importantly not hearing expressed right now………this to me is not a bad guide as to how we should react /behave IMO.

Sad that he’s died at such a relatively young age – but the coverage on the TV news is WAY OVER THE TOP and it just adds to the delusion of those sad souls shown out weeping in the street, tying flowers and tributes to railings and gazing dumbstruck at pictures of the dead star that this is somehow the right way to show ones’ sadness. It isn’t – they should all grow up. What’s happened to people since Lady Diana died? Aren’t we capable of grieving with dignity?
Some gobsh1te on the radio even said Jackson was a "genius"!!!! How devalued does that word get with the passing of the years?
    Beethoven – genius
    Mozart – genius
    Handel – genius
    Puccini – genius
    Rachmaninov – genius
    Chopin – genius
Michael jackson – er, I think not. You get my drift.

A top-class showman no doubt, but genius?
I doubt any of his songs will be sung in 20 years time by those not alive during his lifetime. How many kids in primary school (or high school come to that) go around singing "Jailhouse Rock" nowadays?
When a "top" performer dies – and I grant MJ was a top performer, it seems the media have to try and outdo one another with their hyperbole.
A dignified minute or two to precis the deceased’s career/life should be adequate.

I have to disagree with you insomniac.

As well as performing, he either wrote or co-wrote most of the songs, as well as producing or co-producing them. In my mind Jackson producing his work is no different than one of the composers you mention arranging a composition he had composed.

And, yes, I believe they will still be played / sung in 5, 10, 20, 50 even 100 years time.

The music is iconic of its era, not to mention the highest selling album of all time.

Was he a genius – depends how you define genius.

    the OED defines genius as

    exceptional

    intellectual or

    creative power

    or other natural ability

The highlights are mine and I think Mr Jackson fits the bill.

But that is just my personal opinion on a subjective matter.

Having just watched the"elvis 68 comeback special" on sky arts 1, (40 plus years on) I believe my kids will be watching the equivilant programme in 40 years only with micky j on it.

I have to say though. Farah fawset and jk died on the same day!
She will be remembered for playing with majors and mj for playing with …..
I’ll let you fill the rest in.
