I enjoyed this interview with erstwhile TRF’er Alan Potts – interview conducted by Simon Nott and part of an enjoyable series.
Looking forward to part two.

Simon needs to get a meeting with gingertipster nextCharles Darwin to conquer the World
November 27, 2017 at 23:32 #1329147I’m not in the same class, Nathan.
Alan was the guy that got me started on the “value” theme. I owe a lot to him.
Will look at the interview when time allows.Value Is EverythingNovember 27, 2017 at 23:57 #1329149Presumably the entire interview is circa 15/16 minutes long, so why split the thing at all?
Mr Potts looks better now than he did on that mid-eighties(?) Sandown video that was doing the rounds on social media the other day.

Yep, I’m gonna hold off and binge watch!

Indeed, the silvered Professor Emeritus is looking lean and dapper: has he given up Best Bitter?
All good, sensible stuf but recited for the nth time from a dog-eared script. No bad thing though, if the younger generation of punters choose to absorb it
November 28, 2017 at 11:08 #1329178Echo Drone’s words. I’ve got Alan’s books and talked to him occasionally at the races; so have heard it before. But this isn’t aimed at me. Enjoyed it though.

Today’s punters won’t do any better than listen to him. That said, I do disagree about putting more money on outsiders. Winning more money when outsiders win, yes, staking more on outsiders, no. That doesn’t work for me, profit would depend too much on outsiders. I prefer staking by assessing how much risk is in the bet and how much value. But that’s just me and everyone should find what’s best for them.
Value Is EverythingNovember 29, 2017 at 18:51 #1329412I think what he says about having good gambling instincts is spot on and a very underestimated part of gambling. Some punters just seem to have a feel for the right bets to make more than others, imo.
November 29, 2017 at 19:57 #1329427It’s also interesting what he said in the third video about how what you see is the most important. It’s what I’ve been banging on here about for months. As he says, everyone has a form book, everyone has a stats guide for example. But you can’t beat the eye.
He talks about how cue card won the haldon gold cup and he was sure it was a top horse, and followed it after that and it paid off in the end. A lot of punters I think might have had a similar opinion, see it got beat a couple of times and went off the horse.
