The horses McCoy rode on the last day were one Mr Mole and I quote from Paul Nicholls Betfair column – “There is nothing I would like more on Saturday than provide the record breaking champion jockey AP McCoy with a winner on his final day in the saddle.
He has already won on Mr Mole several times and I’ve kept the horse fresh since Cheltenham for the AP McCoy Celebration Chase at Sandown.
Just imagine the reception he will get if he comes home in front on Mr Mole in the green and gold colours of his greatest supporter JP McManus”

I think the team had done as good a job as possible to provide a winning horse. I personally take my hat off to him riding a Novice 4yr old in the hurdle race, it was not favourite and he gave it an excellent ride. As a rider myself I don’t think anyone who has not ridden knows what it is like to come down to a chase fence going 30 odd miles per hour, they are not cars, do not brake when required and do not stay on straight lines. As for him being an ordinary hold-up jockey, please find me one better and I will book him next time I have a runner.

They did get a bit of advance warning that this would be his last day. McManus has about a million horses sprinkled about and there were seven races on the Sandown card. They managed to find two runners.

AP probably could have had 7 rides that day but opted to only ride the McManus horses. It’s OK having all these horses but if the race/ground didn’t suit and the trainers did not believe the horse had a chance then why risk running them? So although no winner, it was respectable finish with 2 places. He could have finished tailed off or pulled up on a few more if they had just run them for the sake of giving AP a ride.

AP McCoy ” a pretty ordinary hold up jockey ” I’ve heard everything now. Jesus wept.
