Taking nothing away from McCoy’s achievement it will be interesting to see if the stewards take a look at Murphy’s ride.
February 9, 2009 at 21:43 #209258Well done AP
A great acheivement from a great jockey
Giving it all at a wet and miserable mundane Monday at Plumpton sums him up admirably

Yes, slightly ‘tentative’, wouldn’t you say? ? ?
February 9, 2009 at 21:44 #209260McCoy riding his 3000th winner in a beginners’ chase at a cold, soaking wet Plumpton on a Monday afternoon – that’s the way he would’ve wanted it!!

Well done, AP.
I had a few quid on Restless D’Artaix…and Miss Sarenne in the previous race.

That is a diplomatic way of putting it
February 9, 2009 at 21:49 #209262It is a shame that everytime these notable races are spolit by so called ‘suspect’ rides by others (thinking of Tony Dobbin’s last ride and Declan Murphy’s win at Chepstow on Jibereen).

I would suggest that there have been a number of rides over the last few years which could at best be described as ‘indifferent’ when jockeys have been riding for a landmark victory – whether it be a particular milestone, or their final ride under rules.
Nevertheless, 3000 winners is an astounding achievement and all credit to the man.
February 9, 2009 at 22:00 #209270That sums it up Equitrack, which is why I said I did not want to detract from McCoys great achievement, which is something very special indeed.
February 9, 2009 at 22:07 #209277Well I doubt we’ll see any other NH jockey get anywhere near his total in our lifetime,it is some effort.
Dickie Johnson has ridden a hell of a lot of winners himself and yet is lagging miles behind.

I agree, 100%.
February 9, 2009 at 23:25 #209315A decent bloke and a true role model as well as one of the greatest jockeys of all time. Tremendous achievement.
February 9, 2009 at 23:30 #209317Superb stuff from the Champ.
The gap between him and the nearest pursuer in the all time lists is truly frightening, and it is hard to envisage it ever being surpassed, certainly not in my lifetime.
He is a one off, and I think it is unfair to imply Timmy Murphy didn’t try on The Package – I am sure the conspiracy theorists will point to that horse being a Pipe/Johnson animal too. We shoudl just rejoice in the achievement. The Package doesn’t finish his races, that was obvious at Ludlow (when I backed him) and if he couldn’t win then he was hardly going to finish today in desperate ground – imo Timmy Murphy was looking after the horse but even if he beat him up I don’t think he would have won, as AP was hardly throwing the kitchen sink at the Henderson horse and no doubt had plenty left in the far scopier Restless D’Artaix who was a proven heavy ground performer whereas The Package seems more of a better ground horse in any case.
AP is not a "purists" jockey, but he has got the job done for years, and for a golden period at Pond House he was the best friend us punters could have – always there to get us out of trouble!
On ATR they mentioned how bad it is he has never won the Sports Personality of the Year award. I agree, and add Phil "The Power" Taylor to that list – what more do either of these genuine living legends have to do to get the recignition they deserve. We don’t have too many genuine greats in this country and we would do better to laud the ones we have instead of ignoring them. They will be sorely missed when they are gone.
February 10, 2009 at 00:33 #209331A fine post until Phil Taylor appeared in it.
February 10, 2009 at 00:38 #209332A fine achievement from a remarkable sportsman who has put his body on the line for the last 15 years or so in the continuing quest to be the best at what he does.
Also fair play to Richard Johnson, another good jockey who gets overlooked and should be applauded for being runner up so many times and taking it all with good grace.
Am amazed that Plumpton raced today though, If AP had no booked rides then that meeting would never have taken place.
Well done Tony you are a true ambassador for horse racing and sport in general with a huge will to win and no ego whatsoever.

Ach no Rory, the man Taylor is the APMcCoy of Darts, whatever you might think of it as a sport (for what it’s worth I like it). And after all it is only an opinion.
May I take this opportunity of adding my recognition of The Champ, in my opinion, and I go back to Fred Winter on Mandarin in Paris in 1962, the best man on a steeplechaser in my lifetime. None better and a nice guy to boot. Biggest irony of the day was to see him spraying champagne when he is a complete teetotaller.
How about a campaign for arise Sir Tony McCoy, never mind Sports Personality of the year.
February 10, 2009 at 01:26 #209342OK so Timmy let A,P ride his 3000th winner, its still a phenomenal achievement and one that wont be beaten for a very long time, if ever!
Nobody has had the same dedication as A,P over the last 15 yrs and he is living proof that hard work pays dividends. Plunpton will also go down in the history books for allowing race horses to swim round a race track, A.P
was defineately doing the front crawl from the last, where as Timmy was
just treading water!February 10, 2009 at 01:48 #209353I don’t know the man personally, but from what what i do know of AP thorugh interviews, he would be devastated if a fellow Jock ‘let’ him win any race, landmark or not.
Hope this wasn’t the case.
