Personally I find trophy presentations completely out of date, pointless and boring. Who cares if you recieve a trophy for the race?
I think with something like the claret jug in golf or the ashes in cricket then they are iconic trophies, so fair enough they are part of that sport, but can anyone tell me what the trophy for the oaks looks like?
do away with trophy ceremonies altogether, we know what’s won the race.
as for the whole balding vs sheikh mo thing, too often these issues are swept under the carpet so she was right to make him feel uncomfortable. I grimaced in horror with all the fawning that took place with wesley ward with channel four last year, when you hardly need to be sherlock holmes to see there’s something suspiciously muscular about his horses.
June 10, 2017 at 11:34 #1303920Chapman tweeted on Wednesday night: “Thanks for many kind words people. I find in life if you want something done a certain way just ask. It’s not hard.”
Which means he hasn’t a clue and neither have ITV.

“Johnny G sounds a lot more interesting than John Gosden. After all, isn’t that why John Wayne was called Batman and Superman Clark Kent?”

Aye, sounds like another in the long line of daft things he’s said.
June 11, 2017 at 11:40 #1304056While I’m glad Epsom did this it does seem Matt Chapman has a Pratt button that he presses on a regular basis and that’s a shame as he can be sensible and knowledgeable when he wants to.
I remember seeing him when I went to the last greyhound Derby at Wimbledon last year and saw him whooping up the crowd in true moronic style and thinking that trashy ITV are sure to sign him up if they see this!!!
ITV obviously believe a large part of the population are thick and have the attention span of a nat so racing can hardly complain have sold the rights to them.June 11, 2017 at 14:58 #1304067Chapman in The Sun this morning

Is that why John Wayne had that funny walk? It wasn’t saddle soreness but the chaffing of his “Saddle Bags” on the Bat Pole that caused it?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Says it all.
June 11, 2017 at 23:56 #1304100Talk about a fuss over nothing. Who gives a monkey’s about a trophy presentation? And ITV aren’t there to preach to the converted anyway. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: racing should count itself lucky that it’s even on free to air.
June 13, 2017 at 10:48 #1304180I find matt hugely entertaining and when he hosts the Sunday forum on atr its hilarious. The banter between him and gave kelleway was brilliant and managed to have her smiling loads of time a rare feat believe me. I think matt knows he is ott at times but is that his remit from his bosses. Francesca is an absolute honey and besides being gorgeous she is very knowledgeable and knows her onions and mixes easily with the guys. Not sure about ed chamberlain and think Sean Bryce from atr would be the perfect host. All about opinions and it would be boring if we all agreed.

As you said, it’s all about opinions.

June 13, 2017 at 23:39 #1304256Chapman is basically doing the job that Big Mac back in the day, reporting from the ring and taking the micky out of the bookies as he does it – for me I much prefer him to the loudmouth Big Mac.
Racing outside of its own little bubble is still perceived by the masses as an elitest somewhat snobby sport and as such ITV are trying to broaden its appeal and whilst the hardcore knowledgeable fans probably would prefer Chappers not to be on the show, he does not come accross as the typical horse racing person and that is the whole point for more recent and newer viewers to this great sport.
Personally, I like him (but then I also like Marmite) as he is always entertaining and I think it was rather po faced of Epsom considering the whole Poundland Hill nonsense.
Also agree with mickeyjp re comments on the Sunday Forum – him and Boycie make that show for me.
And for those who don’t like him, you might want to be grateful that we didn’t get Robert Cooper instead!!!!!

Why do we need either, they’re both lost causes.
August 2, 2017 at 06:54 #1312379Matt’s done it again Irish trainer Gordon Elliott is refusing to do any interviews with At The Races after Matt called him “Fatboy” on air.
Elliott says he felt “highly disrespectful” and told Gary O’Brien it would be his last interview on the channel the interview was not broadcast to viewers.
It is claimed Elliott and Chapman had a face to face confrontation in the yard pub in Newmarket over it.
Chapman claims it has been blown out of proportion and that Elliott calls him Orangeboy and he calls him Fatboy.

This is interesting. I’ve become quite a fan of Chapman’s over the last couple of years or so I believe he brings entertainment to the sport and he’s good at his job. It’s clear he has close relationships with many people inside the sport you can tell that from his informal / friendly easy going attitude towards his guests on Sunday Forum in particular.
While this approach is admirable in many ways it also can create a problem regarding professional boundaries. It may be true that Chapman and Elliot call each other “orange boy” and “fatboy” and that’s fine in private if those pair are happy to share that sort of banter but maybe that’s where it should remain – in private.
There are private relationships and there are professional relationships, both need to be respected for their differences and for what they are.
August 2, 2017 at 09:12 #1312391Isn’t the article a bit out of date, I’ve just seen Elliot interviewed on ATR by Gary O’Brien about today’s runners.
Can’t stand Chapman’s style of hounding trainers and jockeys in the paddock before a race, I’m sure it must be a distraction at times for them when they’re trying to prepare for a race. I’d sooner see the horses a bit more rather than all that nonsense.
It looks like both ITV & ATR absolutely love his style of presenting though, doubt it brings in more viewers but I’m afraid we’re stuck with it like it or not.
