Alphabetical won a modest handicap at Wincanton this afternoon at a very generous 14/1 SP and was available last evening at 26s and 28s for small amounts on BF. Could he have possibly been unfancied because he was a close third to two gutsy mares on his previous outing?

Are form students generally gender-blind when they see  mares thrown in among the geldings or is there an innate prejudice against them when assessing the odds? Do most punters shy away from mare only races? Do others specialise in them? Are mare jumpers as consistent as their male counterparts? Just curious if anyone has formed any generalisations on the subject.
