If you did not see this weeks Man Lab it’s worth catching up with on iPlayer.
In it James May has a go at calling last year’s Grand National and considering he came at it as a complete rookie he didn’t do too badly – it’s not something I would want to try and I’d like to think I can read a race reasonably well.
The program also features Lee McKenzie and the eagle eyed amongst you will also be able to spot a cameo appearance by our very own Cormack.
March 30, 2013 at 19:16 #434470i watched this program it was enjoyable its not a thing i would like to try either although james may done well i did laugh when he had remembered all the horses numbers and then they all changed because of non runners
March 30, 2013 at 20:02 #434477The full, unedited, James May commentary is available at

(thanks to Lee for the link)
March 31, 2013 at 14:20 #434559I’ll try to catch up with this to look for Cormack if nothing else. Wasn’t there an In At The Deep End back in the 1980’s where one of the broken down That’s Life presenters had a go at being a bookie at The Ayr Gold Cup? Something tells me it might have been the year Green Ruby won?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 31, 2013 at 16:51 #434578I found the whole thing cringeworthy. It should have been titled, Posh Man Boy !

In spite of his preparation and his excellent teacher, May sounded every inch a man with no interest and no concept about horse racing. His final commentary was lamentable to say the least – altogether rather patronizing.

There was also one where Hale and Pace had a go at commentating where (and I cannot recall which of the two it was) one of them had oall a race live on BBC1 .

Wasn’t it the handicap hurdle at the 1998 National meeting ? I think it was Norman Pace doing the commentary and he was trained by Ian Bartlett

Was this actually live on the day or done later with a script?
If it was live it was pretty good, certainly preferable to Croc, Hanmer & Co.I like how relaxed the commentary was and the interjections from Lee were excellent, bringing you up to date and spotting the winner going well a couple of times during the race.
The faller spotting was good too, think a Rory Barker got a mention.
Couple of my favourite bits were the horses "coming back into the stadium" and the trainer "Paul Nicholas" (Dancing With the Captain)This is the sort of commentary that would appeal to the non racing fans.
Looked out for cormack, was he the one who was the spitting image of Mike Vince?

It was the Stanley Leisure Children In Need Handicap Hurdle on November 21st of that year. He made a pretty decent effort at commentary, including calling a faller and brought down correctly and quickly. I think Gareth Hale helped with the paddock analysis.

Yes it was live – and was broadcast live at the time on the red button – the link I provided is the full, live, red button call.
The
Man Lab
broadcast was obviously heavily edited but I think the full commentary gives a better idea of how he did. If you look at the Man Lab version you will see Rory picked up many of the fallers but Lee threw a couple in as well.
The other interesting point is whilst Lee was using bins some of the time James did his commentary from just two monitors. One with the BBC feed and the other with Racetech.
Cormack was taking a photograph behind Rory’s shoulder when Big Mac was teaching him tic-tac.
I thought Lee’s pick-up of the winner as they went out on the final circuit was good.

Jesus, Cormack must have put the beef on if he looks like Mike Vince!!
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Apparently Garether Hale is colour blind – hence Norman Pace being calling the race itself.April 4, 2013 at 10:05 #435019I may be getting on a bit but I’m as trim as ever SC!
