Ted Caine stood Salty Behaviour at stud – if he has that many mares surely he could send them to the cheaper stallions? It´s not like the stud fees for NH horses are huge
I’m sure Ted would be amused to find his breeding practices discussed in a thread on the Derby! Even 15-20 years ago when Ted was a little more cash-rich than he is now (the pig farming business was going better), he would sooner breed his own from free or inexpensive stallions he had acquired (Beverley Boy, Blind Harbour, Ebnalben, Gracious Melody, etc.), so there’s no point in expecting him to change an established habit all of a sudden.
He is a proper believer in the maxim of "something from nothing", and it’s all really rather sweet when it comes off. Cavalier Crossett, as mentioned on these pages before, won eight races for him between 1989 and 1992, having been foaled at home for the right royal sum of £50.
I’m sure someone, probably Sal, would be able to confirm what broodmares are currently standing at High Crossett Farm, but if all the ones I knew about a few years ago are still fertile (Going Pop, Shank’s Pony, Supreme Comfort, Swiss Comfort, Cregg Rose, Mountain Willow, Cloigeann Rua and maybe one or two hitherto unnamed Kasakov mares out of some of the aforementioned), then that still adds up to the equine equivalent of the Yearning For Zion Ranch for Polygamists as far as Salty Behaviour is concerned.

(graysonscolumn)Trust me outlandish thinking on breeding is not reserved for pro trainers and owners. I once worked for a chap who thought he could breed stamina into his mares with an ID stallion
June 6, 2008 at 21:31 #166991…but his wife isn’t, so the possibility of further, um, ambitious entries being made in top class races hasn’t been eradicated entirely (for all that I don’t think she’s quite as barking stars as he is).

Well, take a look at these Wilson entries amongst a total of 68 for a major race taking place later this year, and see if you can guess the race….
AZULEJO(FR), 10 Wilson J.E. & Wilson TJ. 68,0
CONTRABAND(GB), 10 Wilson FG 68,0
PREMIERSHIP(IRE), 12 Wilson J.E. & Wilson TJ. 68,0
SYBELLIUS D´ARTAIX(FR), 8 Wilson FG 68,0
along with
FUSTRIEN DU PAON(FR), 12 Cohen C. 68,0
(ex Fergus Wilson, who I believe may still be a part owner)The race……?
Keep scrolling….can you guess it…..?
It’s the 2008 Velka Pardubicka!!!!
Well, I guess he’s tried everything else? At this rate, not even the Hamburg Lake race is safe!!!

I could see the logic if these horses were suitably experienced over cross-country or unconventional fences. Managing 11 fences around Aintree doesn’t qualify Contraband on that score, and Sybellius D’Artaix’s comments in running for the Grand Steeplechase des Flandres last August don’t make for comforting reading;
“refused trial fence, jumped very hesitantly, tailed off when pulled up before 4th”.
I don’t need to tell our foreign jumps racing fans on this forum what the consequences of a “hesitant jump” at Pardubicka’s terrifying Taxis fence might be.

I thought you might start off with ‘Arsington Sodmonster’, but I can see where you’re coming from!!

(graysonscolumn)Amazingly, Sybellius d’Artaix got round in last years Pardubicka (due mainly to some incredible horsemanship from Ken Whelan). However, the excellent English language Czech racing magazine Paddock Revue pulls no punches in the preview for this years race:
Lets not get too excited about the UK runners, AZEJELU, PREMIERSHIP, CONTRABAND & SYBELLIUS D`ARTAIX run in the colours of the Wilson family. Fergus Wilson, a wealthy Kent based businessman has a penchant for buying horses with some useful form in France and then running them in the top championship races in the UK. Here they usually start at odds in the region of 200-1, attract great criticism from the racing press for having no right to be there and then finish tailed off. AZEJELU (Michael Scudamore) is a typical example – eight wins in France including at Auteuil. In six runs for new connections he has pullled up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, finished 12th in the Topham Chase over one circuit of the Grand National course and pulled up in a Scottish Grand National. PREMIERSHIP (M.Scudamore) won a small race in March, CONTRABAND (Paul Murphy) did win at the Cheltenham Festival but that was in 2005 when trained by Martin Pipe. He has shown nothing since and this year has finished tailed off in a Champion Hurdle, pulled up in a Gold Cup and fallen in a Grand National. It will be quite a feat if he lines up in a Velka. SYBELLIUS D`ARTAIX (P.Murphy) has at least got Velka experience, finishing in his own time last year. However, since then he has pulled up in a hurdle and has not been seen out since December. THESE HORSES CAN ALL BE IGNORED.
The words going through my head at the moment are ‘1984’. No, nothing to do with George Orwell, but 1984 saw the horrendous pile up at the Taxis which, if I’m right, claimed both equine and human lives. I’m hoping to go to the Velka this year, and quite frankly, I want to see a great sporting spectacle, not something resembling some sort of freak show.

"Soddy", as it’s known by the stable lads, is having a small mid-season break following just a fair showing in the "Is this the greatest TV advert ever written?" thread in the Lounge on May 27th. In hindsight it might have come a bit too soon after its appearance in the "A bad week for racing" thread.
It’s scheduled to make its reappearance in a thread bemoaning my lamentable tipping in the Summer National at the end of this month. I suspect the competition will be strong, with "B*ggeration and Toss" from Lady Zoz and "Meh, Meh I Say!" from the Zome yard also likely to figure.

Frank and by no means inaccurate. I suppose if the worst were to occur, it would be away from the steely gaze of most UK racing media (other than arch-Pardubicka enthusiast Alastair Down, perhaps). It wouldn’t make it right, obviously.

Three horses perished, including the Polish runner Futbol. Poland’s revulsion at the death precipitated a boycott of the race by that country which endured until 2000. I can’t find precise details on human fatalities that year, but I’m similarly pretty sure there were some that year.

June 7, 2008 at 08:37 #167059I can’t fathom what pleasure Fergus Wilson gets from spending money on horses and watching them get tanked. He said a few years ago that he was going to quit as an owner after running a couple in the National but he is still around, he seems to be using Paul Murphy more than the Scudamores this time round.

Irish Draught

Most of Wilson´s horses were good enough to run in the National – he just attempts it 3 or 4 years too late

As to how many lengths he’d be last…
(3) 42 at a guess!

Well, pretty close to a bullseye. The official figure was 39!
June 7, 2008 at 18:06 #167227Scudamore jr hasn’t kept those horses after taking over the licence, they are now also with Paul Murphy.
Contraband of course was sold at Donny a couple of weeks ago.June 7, 2008 at 22:13 #167275Well he’s had his first Derby runner – what chance the Arc?
Were will it end?
Breeders Cup,….

He´ll have to have a top horse or at least buy one to get a BC runner, it´s done on a points/earnings basis with the exception of the "win and your in" races such as the JC Gold Cup and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes
June 8, 2008 at 13:13 #167368Maybe to make it more interesting they should run all the Derby horses again at Epsom over 1m4f but put 6 or 7 flights of hurdles on the course and see what happens then,
Maybe MM would wipe the floor with them.
Anyway if put a ratings limit then all the G1 races will be nothing more than a glorified level weights limited handicap.
Why not go the whole hog and ban fatties from running in the Olympic 100 metres.
June 8, 2008 at 13:32 #167372I had a bad feeling when MM was sent to the front. It was obvious that the horse didn’t have the ability to keep up the pace, but in all fairness, he didn’t cause any interference.
Wilson had his two minutes of fame and in years to come he can say his horse led the field in the 2008 Derby.
Actually, the horse did a pretty good job setting a decent pace!! Perhaps Aiden will hire a Wilson horse in future Group 1 races and stop wasting talented horses as pacemakers.

More to the point, Maidstone Mixture made a better fist of making the pace than did the assigned O’Brien pacemaker.

June 8, 2008 at 19:03 #167409Has any previous Derby runner won a 2m Hurdle (at Strasbourg) as his prep race?
Funnily enough, Christian runs Our First Chesnut in a 2 mile hurdle race at Strasbourg on Wednesday.
After that, we’ll aim the horse at the King George at Ascot, the Arc, Breeders Cup and Japan Cup.
Sarcasm rating: 8/10.
