I reckon this was very good.
My thoughts –
1 How is that fella almost 70? He still looks like Jack The Lad.
2 Didn’t agree with all his views – Franklin was pioneer of the dreaded zoom in and if you want truly great writing try Paul Hayward, not Down – but he talked a Hell of a lot of sense.
3 A lot of Racing Post TV makes me want to lob a brick at the screen but I think Maddy Playle is very good.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 20, 2021 at 08:58 #1573408Just watched it, some brilliant comments, he summed up the Frost / Dunne issue nicely and the one about how you can’t legislate for Gordon Elliott being a prat was classic. Good points about the standard of riding with jockeys coming through from pony racing as opposed to hunting.
December 20, 2021 at 09:13 #1573411Could listen to John talking for hours.
December 20, 2021 at 09:23 #1573413Thanks for posting the link.
Not sure why they had to spend half the interview standing behind a hedge but it was an interesting watch.
Don’t agree with him about the whip but he is right about the standard of riding. Perhaps the quality in the post-McCoy/Walsh/Geraghty/Johnson era was inevitably going to decline but I do think there are some distinctly average riders out there now.

I don’t share the same view. Can’t listen to her podcasts. Comes across a bit clueless to me, and another who can’t help overusing the word ‘interesting’ on them.
More interested in what others like Kealy and Segal gotta say.December 20, 2021 at 09:59 #1573416It’s a game of opinions, Mike, so no worries!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 20, 2021 at 12:21 #1573433No nonsense Francome. I think TV companies are wary of him in today’s world where you can’t say anything.
Imagine him on the fluffy ITV racing programme. Would love seeing him let loose on them and would be more interesting viewing as well.
Just what the sterile programme needs.December 20, 2021 at 21:18 #1573523I miss channel 4 doing the Cheltenham festival , Francome , old Walsh and McCririck barneying , well Walsh and McCririck arguing while Francome took the piss , I think the main reason for his youthful appearance is that’s he teetotal like myself , plus a top class shagger ….unlike myself
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
December 20, 2021 at 22:56 #1573541same old Francome, always humping!
December 22, 2021 at 20:44 #1573991He is a clear thinker and a straight talker – a compelling combination for a communicator.
As you all already know, I agree with him wholeheartedly on the whip – a ‘no-brainer’ indeed. Lots of other sense spoken too.

December 22, 2021 at 20:54 #1573996I don’t understand the antipathy in some quarters towards Maddy Playle.
The best interviewers give their subject free rein, with only the gentlest of steers.
Francome is excellent anyway for the reasons David Cormack states, but she asked him the right questions, never interrupted him and made it all about him, not herself.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 22, 2021 at 22:32 #1574018Years ago what francome is saying here wouldnt have been controversial. It was brilliant with mcririck and Jim mcgrath giving honest opinions on all manner of subjects. Itv racing is now so sanitised with no proper discussion on topics like frost/dunne and tylicki/ gibbons. The conversations are so banal and safe. I tape it and fast forward to the races themselves. Only on podcasts like the final furlong or betfair. Great discussions and really enjoyable.
December 22, 2021 at 22:44 #1574020I thought she did exceptionally well. Francs is embedded into racing lore and is certainly a character that I have always been interested in listening to, and his opinion is refreshingly brutal and honest.
I spent quite a lot of late hours, well into the morning last night looking into details of various aspects of his private and business life, that uncovered quite a lot I didn’t know, however judging by my last effort – not all splash works – and will therefore keep those discoveries and my deductions there from, despite a lot being laid out in publicly accessable records, tidily under wraps. There is always a fine balance one has to get right. Gumshoes with spiked shoes like mine, are a slowly dying trade.
December 22, 2021 at 22:51 #1574023Gamble is the best – had he been on the job instead of that rotund Belgian, movies like Murder On The Orient Express, Death On The Nile and Evil Under The Sun (my favourite, actually) would only have lasted ten minutes apiece.
Gamble doesn’t mess about!
