Any firm news on this? Looks tailor-made for the Ballymore to me.
A very useful performer, to say the least – Henderson has some absolute crackers at the moment doesn’t he?
January 14, 2009 at 19:24 #203940I personally would like to see him go for the Supreme, I think he would give Hurricane Fly a lot to think about.
He might, as you state, go for the Ballymore. Either way, he will take some stopping.

I doubt if he’ll go to Cheltenham at all, but today’s performance was certainly nothing to shout about. He impressed at Ascot when beating Karabak, so perhaps the ground was a little dead for him at Newbury, but I wouldn’t be rushing to back him.
This year’s crop of novice hurdlers look very good indeed and those at the head of both the Supreme and Ballymore markets have top class written all over them. If Mad Max does go to the Festival, I think he’ll struggle.
January 14, 2009 at 21:04 #203954My sole bet of today, and though he won well enough, I don’t think the hurly burly of Cheltenham in March will suit this giant horse.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
January 15, 2009 at 15:46 #204050I almost fell asleep watching the race

Second will be winning soon but apart from that a pretty poor event.
You can bet your boots Nicky Henderson wouldn’t have done too much with Mad Max prior to that race. He very often runs horses a bit below par before the Festival.
Looks like he’s going for the Supreme Hurdle now.
The pace of that race would be probably be 20% slower than the pace they will go in the Supreme. They looked to be crawling and as a result Mad Max tok a fair bit of time gettng away from them……mind you I wouldn’t expect anything different from ahuge horse like him in a slow race like that.
I’m not so sure Cheltenham won’t suit him he was in the mix a bit round there and didn’t seem to mind at all………he looks like a strong gallop will suit him and I’m pretty sure, if things go well, he will run a decent race and be invoved in the finish…….BUT!!.
I wouldn’t back him, as Nicky Henderson has made no secret of the fact this horses future lies over fences. "We’ll mess about over hurdles" was what he said and I can’t see him going all out to win the Supreme.
AP stated he is quite an ignorant horse and just flattens his hurdles at times which just get in his way. If he does that at speed round Cheltenham and loses ground you can bet he won’t be knocked about to get back into it. He could end up finishing nearer last than first.
I think he’s a dodgy bet and even at his best I doubt if he can beat the more natural hurdler Hurrican Fly

Agreed……..something along the lines of "Wonder how far I’ll beat that one by?".
January 15, 2009 at 18:10 #204078Agreed… He won’t get anywhere near them in the Supreme. Horses that size don’t win Grade 1 hurdle races… I can’t think of any anyway..
During Henderson ‘s stable tour he said he was only keeping him to hurdles this year because he doesn’t like to make the jump from bumpers to hurdles. Personally i’m not sure he’ll even turn up.

Mullins was asked…..what’s his chances? He repiled "He’ll blow them away" How Original Willie
