The Cheltenham Gold Cup winner from 2000 has passed away at the age of 33 following a long and happy retirement in the care of Richard Johnson and his family. Winner of 8 out of 14 chases including two Grade 1s and a Grade 2.
April 11, 2025 at 18:01 #1726906Oh, I really loved this horse and thought he was long gone. Fantastic news to read about his long retirement. He was in great hands in those days as I liked Noel Chance a lot and what a record he had over fences.
May he rest in peace and what a grand age he reached!!!!
April 11, 2025 at 18:40 #1726909Likewise, I assumed he had gone years ago! Pleased to hear he had such a long and happy retirement.
He had a rather unconventional career. After winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2000, he picked up an injury and was due to miss the 2001 renewal before it was cancelled due to foot and mouth.
He ran in 2002 after a prep race at Wincanton but made little impact behind Best Mate in the first of his hat trick. I think I recall Noel Chance saying if he had his time again, he would have gone to the race without a prep.
