I knew an Indian builder a few years back, Ahmed Ashed.

September 8, 2021 at 01:02 #1559504There was horse racing in ancient Rome, too. I wonder, if the Roman Catholic bookies were a bit more generous than their Jewish counterparts (seen at the rails inside the Colosseum).
That’s why I could imagine SPs at around 1000-1.September 8, 2021 at 21:34 #1559597I’m back from the shed and the results are inconclusive.
According to the Superform annual for 1986 (covering 1985 flat racing) August was used as a pacemaker for Rainbow Quest in the King George, the Eclipse and The Coronation Cup but the annual only records the SP for the first six finishers so I don’t have the SP for the King George or Coronation Cup where August was 12th and 7th respectively but in the Eclipse only four ran (Pebbles and Bob Back being the other two) and the SP is recorded as 300/1.
I guess we’re none the wiser really!
September 8, 2021 at 21:56 #1559598August was 1000/1 in the 1985 King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
As an aside to that, Dick Hern trained Boldden and Vouchsafe were 1000/1 in 1986 KG&QE, their stablemate Petoski, who started at 14/1, finished sixth to Dancing Brave.

That took a while – just how big is this shed?

Thanks for clearing that up robnorth, I thought I had remembered that but couldn’t prove it.That took a while – just how big is this shed?
It’s not that it’s big more that it’s a long way away :)September 8, 2021 at 22:29 #1559604Or you could have two sheds.
September 8, 2021 at 22:55 #1559606I strongly suspect it’s a shed with both an East and a West wing.
This is the mother of all sheds.

It’s interesting to see we now have quite a few instances of an SP of 1000/1 in the 1980s, but none later (so far at least).
September 9, 2021 at 01:19 #1559613Wouldn’t mind being a fiver behind Salut a Toi. Sounds like he has a monster sized garden shed in a different postcode from his house.

I can do you football programmes as well if you like…
September 9, 2021 at 17:17 #1559673It seems the conclusion is who needs Google when you have a shed?! I suspect there are quite a few treasure troves of historical racing information in sheds, lofts, garages and spare rooms across the land…
September 9, 2021 at 17:33 #1559676I was actually thinking how disturbed I was that folk were keeping books in a shed.
Where I come from, sheds are purely for empty rabbit hutches and unused garden tools.
Lofts are the place for unread books, kids school reports saying “little jimmy is a dreamer and must try harder”, and christmas decorations placed closely and conveniently near the access point.
Garages are where worthless, useless, junk, is safely and securely locked away. This leaves no room for the family vehicle worth thousands, so that is parked thouroughly exposed with a steal-me sign on the drive.
