Lone Peak made his 2YO debut today for trainer Freddy Head at Deauville. The son of Lope De Vega out of Galileo’s Oh Beautiful (Also trained by Head) the George Strawbridge colt was racing over a mile in a race for newcomers.
What followed was as stunning a win as you could hope for and, although we don’t know what he beat, there were some well bred ones from good stables in the mix.
This was the race and it is sure to cause a few notebooks to be pulled out this evening:-

What impresses is that it is not a typical mile win where a horse may just steadily come away and perhaps simply outstay the field. It is a real turn of foot and he flies away from them. It really is one of those “Either he is very talented, or the rest are poor” performances.
My big worry is how many of these Freddy Head youngsters look good at 2YO but don’t bring it through at 3YO and the classics/top races.
How do others regard the trainer? Can he bring Lone Peak to the peak? Should we Head to the bookies?
This was as good a start to a career as I have seen and the colt looks very athletic and powerful. Whoosh!
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

August 21, 2018 at 21:20 #1363662Jean-Claude Rouget’s filly Commes landed the fillies race by three lengths. She is by Le Havre, a sire who has had some nice ones for the trainer.
Commes was totally different in style, as she sat off the pace a bit and seem to come through when the more prominent runners fell into a hole. Lone Peak was about a second faster in his race, carrying 3 lbs more and was eased close home.
Freddy Head said Lone Peaks had done quite a lot of work at home and was professional in his attitude. In contrast Rouget said Commes had originally been scheduled to run earlier in the month but was only just ready to start now.
Her race can be seen here:-

She wouldn’t be the biggest of fillies I have seen but perhaps it’s deceptive.
The sad thing with these types of horse is that we can’t get prices for the French Classics until what seems like half an hour before the actual race. Is there no interest at all from UK fans? Do French bettors not bother with ante-post bets at all? Never mind racial diversity, let’s get French people out knocking bookies doors and blaming THEM for the lack of odds on French Racing in the UK.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
