Great ride by Brendan Powell on No Woman No Cry this afternoon at Taunton. Shades of McCoy at his best. From a long way out, scrubbing, pushing, cajoling and a couple of reminders to keep his splay actioned, blinkered, tongue tied, 93 rated novice handicap hurdler up to his work. And he got the horse home, a great ride, punters and purists joyful, gladdened by the effort.
Not good enough said the tabloid gang and their Shaftsbury servants, 9 days for you lad. Go join your mate Brian Harding at the butchers, we cant be having rides like that any more.
Meanwhile Pastoral Jet at Kempton one evening last week, barely causes a whisper.
Is it any wonder the betting shop punters favour Messi these days?

And this is based on what factual evidence?
November 24, 2011 at 18:53 #379468Has anyone seen any actual facts about the alleged reduced level of betting on horse racing since the whip rules were altered ?
November 24, 2011 at 22:39 #379511Fair question Coggy , so far I would say there is no evidence to suggest any reduction , but I would be fairly sure there will be when the penny drops with punters ….that can take a while though

Great post Cav , agree with every word , a fantastic ride , and a jockey to follow no doubt , whether he will be allowed to shine though is another matter ….Btw , I think he is better than his dad ever was , but then again Ruby proved that possible very early on
cheers
Ricky
November 25, 2011 at 13:53 #379552A few days ago the Racing Post published a front page article stating that the bookmakers had seen no obvious change to betting patterns.

You can take the betting away from mugs, but you cant take the mugs away from betting. Whilst there are dodgy 9/4 favs on the card, people will continue to back them blind.
November 25, 2011 at 14:24 #379554No race since the new whip rules came in better illustrates the farcical nature of them than yesterdays at Taunton.
Trier (winner) Discouraged 9 day ban
Non Trier (second) Encouraged "Well done lad"The Stewards & BHA should be hanging their heads in shame.
stilvi,
Only an idiot would consider the betting in the first month of the new rules to be representative of what will happen.
Ricky,
Brendan Powell Snr was a fine jockey & horseman, no better illustrated than his ride to win the National on Rhyme N Reason as well as many others on the likes of Panto Prince, Powell jnr although promising no doubt, will do well to emulate his father.
November 25, 2011 at 14:53 #379557Therein lies the rub, the majority of punters in betting shop do not care to any great extent what racing is offered. As long as there is a winner and an "unlucky" loser, a springer in the market, an outsider in a field of three, first-time blinkered, today’s furthest traveller or any other valid reason for someone to back a horse then the merry-go-round will continue.
If you tried to explain that the virtual racing is a numbers bet, you would be met with blank stares for a nanosecond before they continued their journey to the counter to donate to the bookmaker’s profits.November 25, 2011 at 15:04 #379558stilvi,

Perhaps you should have a word with the Editor?
Facts are clearly only of any use to you if they support your own view. Sorry I couldn’t oblige.

stilvi,
It’s irrelevant what side of the fence you are on but it’s folly to suggest one months of bets when new rules have just come in are any guide to what the future may hold, things take time to evolve.
What will punters make though of races like the one at Taunton yesterday, especially when the BHA want all jockeys to ride like the jockey on the second and not like the one on the winner.
You do have a good point about the editor though, should he even be writing editorials on the whip issue when he wasn’t even aware till a few weeks ago that the whip wasn’t used to hurt horses, he said "What’s the point of using a whip if it doesn’t hurt".
November 25, 2011 at 16:26 #379569One of Cav’s points in opening the thread was "is it any wonder the betting shop punters favour Messi these days". The answer would appear to be that they must have done also, before the new rules were brought in, if the bookmakers haven’t noticed a drop in turnover so far.
November 25, 2011 at 20:36 #379618Eddy , point taken about Brendan senior , I was a huge fan of his , but this boy impresses me more and more each time I see him …perhaps I am being too optimistic
BTW …I agree with Cav and yourself , BHA CURRENTLY have created a cheats charter , hopefully it will be changed , otherwise the game as we have known it will be gone IMO
Still next year will tell the tale , both from Jockeys / punters/Bookies , so I suppose we had better take a back seat and let it unfold , I wont bet though until my confidence that my horse backed will get every assistance from the Jockey, and not some mish mash as is currently happening
Cheers
Ricky

Eddie
Playing devils advocate can you confirm then that with regard to the new whip rules it is also folly to suggest that they are a mistake as "things take time to evolve" and they are not a "guide to what the future may hold" ?

aaronizneez,
As you know, most of us were against the new whip rules before their implementation, we did not base our opinion on what occurred in the first month. The rules stunk from the start and nothing that has happened since has changed that.
Even if the new rules were good one’s but involved some significant change it would of course be better to give them time and gradually bring them in as you point out.
Unfortunately the hopeless BHA chose to bring in drastic change overnight.November 26, 2011 at 09:16 #379688Strange the original post has been virtually repeated in today’s Racing Post Chatroom (Marttin Baker) but substituting Camelloe for No Woman No Cry?
Like a dog clinging to a bone.
November 26, 2011 at 09:29 #379692Camelloe
Freudian Slip admission

Was I the only one who read that as Cameltoe?
November 26, 2011 at 09:35 #379695No!
