Trivia question for Grand National buffs…..
What “record does Little Moppet hold, in Grand National terms ?

    Multiple choice.
    A) Most times entered without actually running, seven.
    B) Last 6 year old entered, 1968.
    C) Lowest long handicap weight ever allocated, 6-4.
    D) Slowest ever completion time, 17mins 14secs
    E) First non-British or Irish horse to run

    One guess each……

I’ve no idea, but I think it’s a tremendous question and an equally-superb selection of possible answers.

    According to google…

No not really, but sounds like the kind of horse I’d be on so how about the longest time to get around?
    Chezza multiple choice.
You’d still Chesney if you were wrong!!

Same thoughts, Marlingford. I’ll go B, on no other basis than it seems the most unlikely to be true, and, therefore, just might be

The two I would exclude are a) and d).

    a) Entering a horse seven times at the ages or 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 without running it seems rather unlikely to me. And why wouldn’t you run him at least once?

    d) Can’t imagine to be that slow. It would be an average speed of 15.5 mph or 25 km/h

I could imagine c) since there were horses rated at around 190-200 in “those” days. A horse rated at around 110 could be alloted 6-4…..

B is the only one I ruled out as the minimum age was increased to 7 following the safety review of the 2011 National. Ironically, Mon Parrain had finished second in the Topham as a 5 year-old the same year.

I’m not sure who the final 6 year-old runner was, but it was definitely after 1968.

I could believe D, especially if remounting were involved, but am plumping for C. Am hoping the answer is A though as it’s so bizarre!

Sorry Louise! You did say it was the most unlikely to be true :-)

    I’m guessing : B

I know that horses as young as 5 has won and the oldest was 15 years. However before the minimum age was introduced at 7 not many younger than 7 took up the offer. The was a short time were it got reduced to 6 but again I didn’t recall any horses running of that age.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

L’Aventure in 2005 is one example of a 6 year-old National runner, though I don’t know if she was the final one.

Her trainer Paul Nicholls has not been afraid of running his horses over the National fences at a young age. Gwanako won the Topham as a 5 year-old, and Mon Parrain came second in it at the same age as mentioned above.

What an excellent question. I’m reasonably hot on Grand National trivia, but I’m stumped.

    I’ll go for C.

The fact that a horse could be rated that low might help to explain why nobody has ever heard of it!

The answer’s C, Mill House was entered that year which would explain such a low weight, although the answer could nearly have been B, Little Moppet was the last 6 year old entered for nearly 40 years. She did hold the record for the slowest times at Carlisle and Hexham I believe, according to an interview in Horse and Hound in 1970, which is where I found her in the first place. The slowest Grand National time is lost in the mists of time, most early runnings never recorded times but several horses spent a considerable amount of time completing given the cross country nature of the event. Not sure about the most times entered without running, although Border Mask, from the early 70s, entered 5 times without running, which must be close to the record.

It wasn’t unknown in past years for a trainer to enter a top class horse, with no intention of running him, just to keep the weights down for other horses. I’m pretty sure that’s why Fred Winter entered Bula in 1977.
