December 21, 2010 at 19:36 #333482Huge What a Friend fan, and will follow him in this as he hacks up winning consecutive years!
December 21, 2010 at 19:49 #333484To be honest I don’t think What A Friend will be good enough, was a fortunate winner last year imo. I’d take Joncol and Pandorama as the ones to beat.
December 21, 2010 at 20:06 #333488The form of both Nolan’s and Meade’s string would have me worried about Joncol and Pandorama’s chances in this. Nolan’s last two high profile runners Seafield and Carloswayback ran very badly. Meade’s also looked to be blowing up at Fairyhouse and Navan last week – I’m thinking of Perfect Smile and Fully Funded in particular while his horse in the bumper was well fancied and ran terribly.
I still reckon What A Friend is a bit soft. This race fell into his lap last year with Cooldine suffering from an infection and Joncol being ridden wrong. It may do so again but I’d be a bit disappointed if there wasn’t one or two better than him in it.
All things considered, I thought Cooldine’s run at Fairyhouse was very encouraging even though I’ve heard a few experts saying the opposite. Mullins’ traditionally need their first run and the trip and pace of the race were against him. He settled for the first time in ages and put in his best round of jumping since Cheltenham ’09. If he can get back to his form of his novice season he’s more than good enough to win this – whenever it takes place.
We’ve had a deluge of snow here in Kildare over the past 4 or 5 hours and I can only assume it’s the same situation up in Dublin.
December 22, 2010 at 04:24 #333535Asigh Pearl looked fine to me at Fairyhouse

I’ll take it that Meade can have Pandorama ready
December 22, 2010 at 13:37 #333573Meade admits in the below article that he’s been disappointed by the recent runs of a lot of his horses:

December 22, 2010 at 17:18 #333608I must admit my ego and pocket (along with many of my friends)took a bashing after Pandorama’s Newbury effort.
I think I will stick with him here but I agree that Cooldine ran an excellent trial in the John Durkan…the pace he set meant it was almost like a 16/18f race. I thought he ran a cracker. I will back both above and also the forecast.December 22, 2010 at 21:11 #333632Does anyone know when the bookies will be pricing this up Ante-Post? I seem to recall that it happened earlier last year…
(and, yes, I am aware Betfair’s had it for some time now!)
BlueSky @pghenn.bsky.social
So don't run, just like the others always do
December 22, 2010 at 21:45 #333635Thanks IC.
Serious rethink as reguards Pandorama…too many of his running "disappointingly" for there to be simply coincidence.

13 J’y Vole (FR)(153) (WPMullins) – DJCondon 11,05The rain has cleared the last of the snow but waterlogging could now become a problem. Hopefully it gets the go ahead.
I think this is set up for Cooldine. There are serious doubts over the form of the Meade and Nolan yards but the enforced break may have done them the world of good. J’y Vole is a classy mare but I think she’s better over two and a half and she is probably a better horse going right handed. The ground will be against Kempes and The Listener is pushing on a bit now. Interesting that Russell rides Money Trix in preference to the two Gigginstown horses. He’s not without a chance on his run here last year.
December 27, 2010 at 16:25 #333975I like a few in this one. Should be a great race.
Disappointed Notre Pere is going for this over the Welsh National as i don’t think 3 miles i enough for him, but on the ground he loves he could spring something good.
I liked Pandorama going into the Hennessy and i like him going into this one. Newbury was just one of those things and i’m going to be putting a line through that for several years to come. This race should bring out the best in him and i feel he’s the one to beat.
A horse who seems to be forgotten is that old warrior; The Listener. Always had class and won the JNWine last year before getting injured and taking the rest of the season off. I reckon he’s got an great chance of winning and is amazing value at 14/1.
Vic Venturi has always had a bit of class in him and both the conditions and field size will suit him tomorrow. Again great value going at 20/1.
I’d never make Cooldine favourite.
December 27, 2010 at 16:45 #333976This will be a tough test of stamina if it goes ahead tomorrow, wouldn’t like to see Cooldine pulling hard early on, as he may not get home.
I am a big fan of Glencove Marina who should love the ground being out of a Turtle Island mare, very lightly raced due to leg troubles in the past. He will carry my eway cash tomorrow.
The supporting card is not bad either, I think Quito De La Roque in the 125 has a decent chance, he won over hurdles in an absolute bog at Fairyhouse’s Easter Festival. Made a nice debut over fences at Clonmel earlier this month, though it is a very hot race.

December 27, 2010 at 23:54 #334004Hope it gets the go-ahead as this looks an interesting race as usual. If it does I’ll risk a small bet on J’Y Vole. I know on the face of it she looks more of a Ryanair horse, but I’ve thrown a few quid at her for the Gold Cup, and if things don’t go to plan tomorrow, I’ll at least know that’s one Ante Post bet I don’t have to worry about.

As JohnJ says, Quito De La Roque looks good in the 1325, so it’ll probably be a small double too.
December 28, 2010 at 00:13 #334005I fancy Joncol for this one should the race go ahead, Paul Nolan’s charge will relish the bottomless ground so he should have a cracking chance!!
Im going for a double tomorrow I really fancy mossey joe in the 2 o’clock race too, the 50/1 double would go a long way towards making up for the lack of excitement so far in the festive calendar!!
December 28, 2010 at 01:04 #334008In my opinion, there isn’t a finer looking horse in the field than Joncol. Cooldine looks so insignificant next to the big horse!

I think Jon will love the conditions and hopefully the yard will find themselves in better form this side of Christmas. If Nolan has his stable firing again, he’s the one to beat.
The ground can never be too heavy for Money Trix. He proved himself good enough when runner-up in this last year and goes particularly well fresh. He can go close at rewarding odds.
Pandorama is another who will relish the conditions. Can be excused a poor showing in the Hennessy, where he was hampered early on, and had previously only found Mikael D’Haguenet too good under rules.
Money Trix at the current odds.

Can’t be having Cooldine who I have always felt lacks what it takes to win a big race. Granted he won the RSA and was beaten only a neck by Joncol but that was a tactical game that day and it may have flattered him a touch. I can’t see him galloping these horses into the ground.
No extra points for spotting Joncol was out for a day out on his 1st race back…..2 miles is hardly ideal let alone taking on the current 2m champion chaser. Exactly same plan as the year before just a different target
Pandorama was fancied big time to win the Hennessy and I reckon we’ll see why today
His rating is irrelevant his game defeat of Weapon’s Amnesty alone makes him as good if not better than any of these.
He din’t get so much hampered in the Hennessy as delivered a whacking great right hook that kocked him silly. He took such a wallop he was totally unbalanced by the time the next fence came up and could hardly get off the ground.
As long as that hasn’t affected his confidence I reckon he has a great shout of outbattling the somewhat dodgy Joncol. Pandorama is up for a fight but Joncol needs kidding and Cooldine is as one paced as they come.
I reckon this new kid on the block will show last years crop of novices to be much superior to those that were around before them…….hope that make sense got a wee bit too much Xmas spirit in my blood..CHIVAS CHEERS! :0)
