How many times does the Racing TV presenter ask the rhetorical “shall we” a week? Love to get a price on over 20.

Other annoying catchphrases: Oli Bell with “Put it into words” and Lisa O’Neill starting every sentence with “Yeah”.

    Any others?

Though ultimately as gagged as the rest of them by the vested interests that surround her and her employers, within the confines of her RacingTV remit, Hislop is at least more outspoken than most.

The only truly independent member of the racing media is Greg Wood of The Guardian and IMO he uses his complete editorial freedom well.

Chris Cook can’t say as much now he’s at the RP, but Paul Hayward, currently writing a book and not employed by anyone, speaks his mind too.

I can live with Lydia Hislop saying “shall we” more than once. She is far better than the other presenters on RTV. And she was very good on the Frost/Dunne case on Nick Luck’s podcast yesterday.

I’m sure all of us have our stock phrases that we overuse, so this type of thing doesn’t really bother me if what the person is saying is worthwhile, which it is in Lydia’s case.

Re AP, I don’t really think he brings much to the table on ITV Racing, especially compared to Ruby. I also wonder if he will have harmed his future prospects by his childish behaviour on social media this week.

I’ve met Tony McCoy, really nice courteous guy, and arguably the best NH jockey of all time.

But his values are an ill fit for ITV Racing in 2021 and either he modernises his approach and adopts a different stance or he faces a limited future in broadcasting IMO.

Whatever their respective merits in the saddle, Ruby Walsh has the edge and then some on TV.

Walsh might share some of McCoy’s views, but if so he at least has the sense to keep them to himself.

“… at least has the sense to keep them to himself.”

So do you want people to speak their minds, as implied by your previous post in this thread, or keep their opinions to themselves?

Bringing two strands of this thread together, McCoy revealed an unpleasant side to his character with a petulant outburst about Lydia Hislop on “The Morning Line” many years ago. She had criticised one of his rides and he angrily said he would listen to John Francome or Peter Scudamore but not Lydia Hislop.

I believe what angered McCoy was the criticism from a woman. If a male journalist had made the same comments, he may not have liked them but I doubt it would have annoyed him so much.

There maybe top heavy with ex jockeys , McCoy never looks comfortable , maybe they need a ex trainer , would love that insight to , not sure who they could get though

More general whinging and the usual name-dropping from Davies

Plus – He seems to have picked up a lot of what AP and Ruby are saying considering, as he’s told us about fifty times, he always watches on mute.

    Lip reader?

To be fair, there are no end of well-known people I’ve never met: The Pope, Joe Biden, Tank (though the latter might be down to the restraining order I’ve had taken out against him).

To get the topic back on track, it’s the old “how many winners have you ridden?” line jockeys use in an attempt to disqualify most people from being able to express an opinion.

It won’t wash – if you operate in the public domain, people will have views on how you’re performing.

I’ve mentioned Lydia before about a word overuse. Cant watch RUK when she’s in the ring prerace as nearly every horse is “interesting”.

My pet hate is Francesca (and Oli Bell and Jason Weaver to a lesser extent) answering any question with “He sure does”.

I quite like Lydia as she doesn’t seem afraid to ask the questions on topics that a lot of the other presenters will tip toe around for fear of upsetting the interviewee.

‘Put the race to bed’ is a comment all of them use far too much and don’t get me started with Mark Johnson’s shouting commentary and the Americanisms he brought back with him after a spell commentatening in the US, in particular the ‘there in the gate” which apart from being physical impossible is just the wrong terminology as horses go into starting stalls and not a gate – glad he doesn’t have the main ITV commentating job as I would probably have it on mute for every race.

You cannot really win. I find that even on mute some silences can be more annoying than others. There’s the silence where they are all laughing and you wonder what the joke is, and then there is the silence when they look horrified and you wonder what they are horrified at. Then there is silence when someone’s face gets very angry and you wonder if they suspect you might be on mute.

Lydia is about the best in my view, knowledgable and great at getting more out of people in interviews than others do.
My pet hate commentating wise was always Aussie Jim McGrath and his constant use of ‘jumping like a stag’
